2024 8 Out of a Bog or Two
This is a couple of months after our Outback Trip, but some fun footage to end with. Our friends, bogged in a paddock. Their winch cable broke and they had to camp in the bog overnight. We arrived the following morning to pull them out and then got bogged ourselves having to self winch out. We then used the sand treads to make a mini bridge in the lower exit for our friends. A bit of fun for the weekend.
Col used a block to halve the pressure on our own winch.

2024 Outback Day 23- Mount Kaputar to Newcastle
มุมมอง 45วันที่ผ่านมา
A rainy day pack up, flooding dirt roads, kangaroos and country towns! Well that's a wrap for our 2024 Outback Australia trip. It absolutely pours overnight! It was a slow and careful descent of Mount Kaputar in the wet. I had to hop out and move some rocks off the road that had come down overnight. Next we turned south to by-pass Narrabri, along the last of our dirt driving. This was a bit of ...

Back onto tar today, but excited to hike at Mount Kaputar! We drove along the Killaroi Highway through cotton, wheat and canola fields. Through Burren Junction and Narrabri to the north side of Mount Kaputar. We did the 1.4km out and back, easy Sawn Rocks walking track to see some incredible volcanic organ pipes. Then we drove up Mount Kaputar itself. It's a steep, narrow, windy road that's hal...

Staying at the Opal Big 4 Caravan Park. We rode our bikes through opal fields to the south of Lightning Ridge. Col had more punctures. We explored Chambers of the Black Hand opal mine and sculpture tunnels. Caught up on some washing back at camp. Had a wonderful soak in the Artesian Pools across the road from the caravan park, with mineral waters of 36-40 degrees to fix our aches and pains. We ...

After a lovely morning with the emus at Corni Paroo Waterhole, we headed off on a pretty big drive day. First through the Queensland border town of Hungerford, through the Dingo fence once again, then down Hungerford road in NSW, past Fords Bridge, and across the Darling River just north of Burke. After a quick lunch stop in Brewarrina at Muddy Waters Cafe (we previously saw the fish traps, but...

A wonderful day relaxing and exploring at Corni Paroo. A wonderful campsite that we had to ourselves on the Paroo River. It's in the Currawinya National Park in outback SW Queensland. Our day was filled with kayaking, riding bikes, exploring and relaxing. Beautiful sunrise. See me fall in the river. We visit Caiwarro Station, 1870-1990, a 1 million acre property in its day. It's been wonderful ...

First we had a look at the Noccundra Hotel. Should have had a drink here last night! Then we travelled from Noccundra (our free Wilson River camp) to Corni Paroo camp on the Paroo River in the Currawinya National Park, in Queensland, Australia. The drive to Thargomindah was on a sealed road through channel country, which was recently underwater. We collected some firewood along the way (before ...

Criss-crossing the South Australian and Queensland border today. The southern end of Cordillo Downs Road was still closed to towing and vehicles over 4 tonne, so we took the Arrabury Road down the QLD side of the border. It was more beautiful than I expected. We drove through the cattle from the station, along red dirt roads and some pretty cool mesas and elevated views. We passed a couple that...

Outback exploring and tyre repairs! Before we even left home I found this cool, huge, dark red sand dune on Google Earth that I wanted to camp by. It is on the Cordillo Downs Road, right near the Arrabury Road turn-off. It felt like a little bit of the Simpson Desert in the middle of the Sturt Stoney Desert, South Australia. This was our wonderful outback Australia bush camping and exploring ti...

Farewell Birdsville Hotel. We're off down the Cordillo Downs Road today, crossing from Queensland into South Australia and heading south through the Sturt Stoney Desert. At the moment only the northern half is open for heavy vehicles and towing. Our aim today is for a beautiful large red sand dune at the Arrabury and Cordillo roads junction where we'll bush camp. The road had only recently re-o...

Today we drive the northern half of the Birdsville Track. We were so lucky that it had just reopened the 2 days before (20th May). It was probably smoother than usual as it had just been graded. We passed the grader up north. People had been stuck at Mungerannie for 5 days. There were a few really easy water crossings with a very firm base. Drove from Arkaroola in the Gammon Ranges to Muloorina Station which is 50km north of Marree, and just south of Lake Eyre, South Australia. We knew the track to Lake Eyre from the property (Level Post Bay) was closed, so we first did a detour back to Lake Frome. It's a great little track heading east from Balcanoona. That was great! Thanks! The last time that I was in Birdsville was in 1988. What amazes me about the Australian outback is that it’s a living desert. I went for a walk and stood on a dune, just West of town. There were animal tracks everywhere! Not a dead desert, but totally alive. I’ve just retired and will be there again, soon!

Pretty good, looks like you are having fun. We just sold our camper trailer due to the amount of work involved in setting up, so I do like the other vehicle with the pop-up bed, a whole lot less hassle. Gives me an idea that I might like one the same. Cheers.

@@rodneywatson7855 yes we have so many more travel options not towing. And super easy to set up. Just press a button. We made it ourselves. Added the extra axle to both give it extra support and legally carry up to 4.5 Tonnes. If you watch the next video in the series, we test it on Big Red 😊

2WD would be fine until the turn off from ZigZag track. It looks to be about 4km along the fire trail (each way) added to the hike I did. Alternatively find it on AllTrails and do the longer bush hike. It is 17.5km loop walk from Bell. It might need to be an overnighter in that case and you would need to be good at navigating as it's easy to get lost amongst the pagodas.
