My grandmother's grandparents came to America from Ireland. She was born in 1930 and as young as 6, she still saw those signs in windows. It's a long way we've come.

I learned about "No Irish need apply" from my grandfather, when I was 8 years old. I found a sign in his attic with that message on it. I brought it downstairs and asked him about it. He told me it's meaning, and that he went to the attic once a year to look at it, to remind himself of why he should never treat others badly, just because they were different from him. My grandfather had taken that sign from a Boston store window when he was young. He started a business, and had employees of every stripe for 60 years. Cheers to my grandfather!
