SHATTERING NARRATIVES: The Conclusion
The latest episode of Locked On A’s brings a dramatic conclusion to the ongoing saga of the Oakland A’s relocation, as host Booney takes a deep dive into the narratives surrounding the team’s exodus. He challenges the conventional wisdom that Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred failed Oakland, arguing instead that the real culprit is A’s owner John Fisher. With a mix of humor and frustration, Booney explores the bureaucratic red tape, financial standoffs, and political dysfunction that turned the Howard Terminal project into a never-ending nightmare. From backroom deals to absurd negotiations over infrastructure costs, this episode exposes the chaos that led to the A’s eventual departure for Las Vegas.
But beyond the blame game, Booney reflects on the emotional weight of the A’s departure and how the conversation has become too heated to the point of losing sight of what baseball should be-fun. He admits to getting caught up in the anger himself and reminds fans that, at the end of the day, it's still just a game. With a final take that may surprise listeners, he offers a fresh perspective on what the A’s move means for Oakland, the fanbase, and the future of baseball in the Bay Area. Tune in for a mix of hard-hitting analysis, sharp humor, and a reality check on the A’s relocation story.

Waiving the relocation fee during negotiations is NOT fighting for Oakland! Not to mention he dragged this fan base EVERY chance he got. Yes he said what he said YEARS ago but obviously they had a change of heart. They will regret what they have done here. There is a stain on baseball from all of this sham of a relocation!
@@smokey5100 I said up until 2021 he fought, that’s a fact. I said in 2021 things changed.
@LockedOnAs I know. Sometimes it's hard to listen to the whole video when you gotta get it off your chest
@smokey5100 I know what you mean. I get it.
I agree with you said that if the city of Oakland really wanted to keep the A's, they could have found a way.
Thank you from Las Vegas Nevada thank you some of your arguments I have been making with people from Oakland for the past year or so
My favorite part of the whole saga is when Oakland city council sent gift boxes to the other owners hoping for 8 no votes
Another awesome show Booney. Filled in a lot of gaps. You had me at the GAMETIME advert. I was thinking how cool it was you were at "The Catch" game with your dad. Thanks for these three shows, as a lifelong A's fan it was enlightening. Keep up the good work, it's almost spring training and really looking forward to baseball again.
I wish I was at that game! lol. Thank you as always TV!
I am so happy we are almost finished with the protests, flags and green shirts!
Oakland doesn't have the corporate sponsorship like Vegas and San Jose does. The A's would make more money and revenue in Vegas and San Jose. Yes Oakland is a top 10 media market but you can't make money and revenue to sustain a franchise. The A's and raiders were at the bottom of their leagues when it comes to revenue. Revenue is how you retain your star players and sign big free agents. Vegas is the number 40 media market but it is a money maker the A's would make a lot of money in Vegas you lose the loyal fan base in Oakland but they will be in a better position financially!!! Just look at the raiders they are doing better financially than they ever was in Oakland!!!
If the A's can't come up with the construction costs for the Las Vegas ballpark which they haven't as of today the A's will have to regroup and find another location. At the last LV Stadium Authority meeting on Dec 5 Sandy Dean said the Fisher family were organizing to get the $1.75 billion together. MLB set the deadline last year in Dec 2024 for Dec 2025 and it's been over a year. If Fisher can't come up with the money the A's should reconsider Oakland. Oakland has a NEW mayor Kevin Jenkins and it wouldn't hurt to explore a ballpark location at 12th and Broadway in downtown Oakland. Unless MLB has closed off any chance for the A's to return to Oakland, Fisher just may not have the money for Vegas reconsidering Oakland might be that solution. As of now there is no secured funding for Vegas or no solution.
Hey Bruce, the Fishers have the money. They have it in what is called an SBLOC (SECURITIES BACKED LINE OF CREDIT). Almost exactly the same as a Home Equity Line of Credit, but instead of using your home as your collateral, you use your Stock Portfolio as your collateral. Will they use that to pay for the stadium? I don't know, the point being is they have the money. To your point, let's say they don't. They will not come back to Oakland. Manfred was on the side of Oakland until the reverse boycott and the sell-the-team campaign. MLB wants nothing to do with Oakland. My guess is they would stay in Sacramento and build a new ballpark there.
@@LockedOnAs 1) As you said, the Fishers have the money and have on several occasions committed to LV, 2) Banks, MLB, and LV officials have viewed their finances and agreed, 3) MLB owners by 30-0 vote specifically approved move to LV, not Sacramento, 4) A's have signed a legally binding 30-year non-relocation agreement. Given the above, I recommend even the possibility of a permanent relocation to Sacramento should not be taken seriously or even discussed.
“The River Cats and the A’s have done a great job making changes necessary to host Major League games,” Manfred said to the Review-Journal on Thursday via email. “Sacramento will be a great home that will allow the A’s to ramp up for an exciting opening in Las Vegas in 2028.”
Do you have a source or a link that talks about Manfred being on the side of Oakland until the reverse boycott and sell the team campaign.? The only thing I remember him saying in public was that it would be a mistake if baseball ever left Oakland. That was sometime before the pandemic. Since that quote Ive never heard him say anything positive or favorable about Oakland prior to the start of the "Sell The Team Campaign and Reverse Boycott"
@@peteweidert4927 Pete, I will be honest with you. When I began researching I went in with a pre conceived notion that Manfred either remained quiet or supported the move to Vegas. After researching, his support was overwhelming for the A's to stay in Oakland from 2016-2021. He started to become impatient in 2021. You can literally google it and its all over. If you need to verify, sure I can send you the actual links and sources. Here is a quote in support of then Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff. ‘The Mayor in Oakland has made it clear to me that baseball is her first priority. She would like to keep both teams, but baseball is her first priority. And I think that’s a good spot for baseball to be in.’
When a person buys a house, for example, doesn’t that person lose money every year until ultimately making money in the end due to appreciation while also enjoying the asset? Doesn’t that also hold true for baseball teams? John Fisher never enjoyed the asset. He’s no fan of the team. Yet, he’ll certainly make plenty of money when he cashes out soon. All team owners will profit in the end. But they should also be fans and appreciate the club and fan base. Otherwise, just buy a bunch of Mc Donald’s franchises.
Robert, your comparison between homeownership and owning a baseball team is flawed. When someone buys a house, they may lose money annually due to maintenance, taxes, and mortgage interest, but they also get direct personal use from it-living in it. A baseball team, however, is not just a passive investment; it’s an active business generating revenue every year through ticket sales, media deals, sponsorships, and merchandise. Owners aren’t simply sitting on an appreciating asset-they’re profiting annually, even if they claim operating losses for tax benefits. Your point brings attention to a much bigger issue, should baseball owners be fans or is it like any other business entity? Are they obligated to give back to their fans? MLB is not a public entity, it is a private corporation. In other words, is it ok for me to come to you and say hey Robert you make plenty of money already, it's time for you to invest back into your business rather than pocketing the money? Then the question is where is the line drawn between having plenty of money or not. Is it a billion? How about a million and so on. You make great points Robert and I do agree with just about everything. John Fisher is not a fan who should appreciate the club and fan base. He has not done that whatsoever. Thanks for the comment, appreciate it.
The A’s have had attendance issues their entire existence, but it doesn’t help that they frequently threatened (or tried) to relocate from the moment they left Philly. While in KC, Finley threatened to move to Dallas and Louisville before actually moving to Oakland. Almost immediately after moving to Oakland, Finley began threatening and even applying to move to Denver, and even looked at New Orleans. The Haas era was the best stability the franchise had in Oakland. Attendance was their best, they had superstar players, and they won- a lot. Under Shott and Wolff/Fisher the A’s had dwindling attendance but also refused to re-sign star players, all while threatening or attempting to move to San Jose, Fremont, Portland, and Vegas. Yes, the A’s have had attendance issues, but they also have spent most of the past 55+ years threatening or exploring relocation. It’s a chicken or an egg situation. Did the fans stop showing up because the team kept threatening to move and spend money, or did the team threaten to move and refuse to spend money because fans weren’t showing up? There’s a lot of nuance, but it’s a shame that the team has spent almost the entirety of their post Philly existence threatening to move.
@@MattGruberPhoto hey Matt. You make a valid point. You made a point regarding the Haas ERA. When Walter Haas was spending his last 5 or so years, he was losing close to 10 million a year. The question then becomes, what is fan expectations? The fan doesn’t care if the billionaire owner is losing money, they want to sign the exciting free agents, where the owner, like every owner after Haas and countless owners in sports doesn’t like losing money. Who is right? No question, the A’s history has been filled with uncertainty and my point is not the fan base, but rather the city itself.
The poor attendance at A’s games in Oakland over many decades clearly points to the market, rather than the stadium condition, the team performance, or the ownership. While some may point to specific problems with the team, especially the ownership history, the statistics compare the A's to other teams, many also with less than perfect situations. Statistics over decades tend to wash out specific problems or excuses. Even during the 15 Haas years, attendance was below American League averages for a slight majority of years.
I believe there are wonderful fans in Oakland that I truly feel sorry for… unfortunately there aren’t enough of them. I hope your facts help them channel their energy from protesting to making Oakland a better city. Thank you as I know compiling this information was time consuming as the misinformation seems to overshadow facts.
Thank you for being the oasis of truth.
A's fan from Chicago here. Ive never been to Oakland but having watched thousands of thousands of A's baseball games on TV I will give my two cents as an outsider. 1. The A's made the playoffs 11 times since 2000, yet ranked lowest in attendance year after year 2. It doesnt make good business sense for Fisher to invest in Oakland when the city is in shambles and all other sports teams left years ago. 3. I want the A's to be a thriving organzation that can resign their own stars and build dynasties again. Idc if thats in Oakland, Sacramento or Las Vegas, but it became obvious after 2020 it was never going to work in the city of Oakland.
While you did hit on some of the inconvenient truths, you are still leaving out a lot of the story. The Wolff part of the story, however, was spot on.
Yesterday was simply the transition from Haas to Schott and the summary of the Schott Years. What do you feel I left out? Tomorrow will be more detailed on Wolff.

The average attendance was 13,646 over 57 years. McGwire had 24 homers in 59 games in 1997. Homer every 8.1 at-bats in 95 and 96. The average attendance was 15,000. He got traded to St. Louis, became an international superstar and saved baseball. If he was in Oakland, he would have had 38 at the All-Star break with an average of 16,000
Okay Booney, although I differ in general from what you're trying to put across, I am a smart enough, long time fan who realizes that to your point there are a lot of gray areas concerning this whole subject. That being said, your statistical analogy of the Haas era to SH era conveniently leaves out the fact of what the two ownerships inherited. Despite Rickey already being there, when Haas bought the A's the Finley farm system couldn't have had much going for it. So when you cite "winning percentage" of the two eras, the Haas era is definitely skewed by the 1982/86 years. Take those years out and how does it look now? In other words, there was a MAJOR difference in what the Haas ownership INHERITED as opposed to what the SH group inherited. Again, you skipped over this in favor of focusing on deferred contracts. I might be wrong, but when a MLB team is sold isn't it fairly normal for the buyer to realize the payroll of players on the team that are already owed money for upcoming years? All I'm trying to get at here, is if your video is going to come across as you being someone that is covering all the under the radar facts, disclose ALL OF THEM fairly, ok?
@@fansince68 my point wasn’t to diminish Haas whatsoever or to say the Schott ERA was better than the Haas ERA. What was widely portrayed during that time which has carried over for decades was that the Schott ERA was thought of as an ERA where they gutted the team, didn’t spend and wanted to move. Which is true, but the ERA proves to be a very successful one as well. My analysis of the A’s ownership and the misconceptions starts with Schott, not Haas. In order to make my point, I had to compare Schott to Haas.
@@LockedOnAs Fair enough. I'm just saying that citing W/L records and attendance records solely on numbers doesn't tell the whole story. When Schott bought the team, he received a fan base that was created by the Haas family. The fact that they averaged slightly more fans was also influenced by the growing population of the bay area. Remember what Vin Scully said, "statistics are like girls in bikinis - they show a lot, but they don't show EVERYTHING."
@@fansince68 The Haas ERA out drew any other ownership ERA. I agree with what you are saying. The narrative that is widely thought of as truth is cause and effect, Schott gutted team, didn’t spend which led to a poor product put on the field, thus attendance plummeted. The first two are correct, but the effect is simply not correct. No matter how one wants to twist it, whether it is population, or what fan base he inherited. To suggest that the product on the field was not good or that attendance plummeted is factually incorrect.
What a great episode Booney. I have read a lot of the narrative busting things you brought up. It was good to see them all in one place and to refresh my memory. As I have said on numerous occasions, I have never lived in the Bay area so the A's moving doesn't affect me as much as a local. I grew up an Oakland A's fan so the idea of them not being that is something I'll get used to. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Leclerc is a good arm. Look at some of the stuff on Baseball Savant. He was supposed to have a 3.50 era
This is a freaking John Fisher shill site. To blame a mayor who just got into office(regardless of the corruption) is just incorrect. Fisher systematically ran this team into the ground during his entire tenure. This is the era of re-writing history aka gaslighting led by our fuerer in chief Herr Trump. Your show is a piece of garbage Mr. Fisher tool.
Wow, profound. Great take.
@ I’m guessing you are saying that with more than a touch of sarcasm. Mr. Fisher has made no effort to improve our A’s. Sadly he will continue this austerity plan as long as he owns the team. Owners should treat owning an historical franchise as a honor not just a business opportunity. Sadly he is like the rest of the owners and is in it to further his status as a billionaire.
@rainbowmade1880 see that, that is an intelligent take. No personal shots, just a good take. I agree with just about all of it. I think he has to look at it as a business opportunity and don’t fault all owners for limiting spending depending on their situation. The A’s have won at no credit of ownership.Does that make the spending issue less important? In my opinion, yes and no. What’s more important, spending and losing or not spending and winning?
@ his general managers have saved his bacon over and over putting competitive teams out there with a very low budget.
@@rainbowmade1880 no question rainbow. I think the A's have been successful in the Amateur draft more than any other team in MLB. Beane got a lot of credit for those Moneyball teams and deservingly so, but the chore of that team was the Big 3. Mulder drafted #2 overall, Zito I think was #9, Hudson SEC player of the year who they stole in the 6th round. Chavez was a top 10 pick. Giambi a 2nd rounder. Even when they got rid of Foulke, the got Koch in return who was the #4 pick. They did sign Jermaine Dye to a sizable contract, sizable for the A's. I agree that the A's have failed to add a veteran player that could have put them over the top. The label being put on the A's as a loser franchise is simply not true, regardless of spending. With that being said, the last 3 years have been ridiculous.
I understand what you're saying. I also understand that baseball can thrive in Oakland with quality ownership. In the history of the Oakland A's they've only had one quality owner and that was the Haas family. When the Haas family sold to Shott and Hoffman the only thing they talked about was moving the team. I'm sure that turned off a lot of people. If MLB wanted the Oakland A's to succeed they never would have sold to John Fisher. You had the Joe Lacob group and you also had the Reggie Jackson group that offered 25 million more than John Fisher but was turned down because they told MLB they were committed to Oakland. If you were a true Oakland A's fan like you say you are the last place you would want your team to go is to Las Vegas. In Las Vegas the team will never have a true fan base. Have you ever been to a Raider game it's like a road game. The A's will be in the same situation, but it will be a lot worse because you have an owner that doesn't like spending. If you ever want to talk about the situation in Oakland bring it on dude because I will school you. Do you know who Charlie Finley is. If you were a true Oakland A's fan you would be asking MLB why he isn't in the Hall of Fame.

With this news, you do have to wonder how much this affected the A's staying in Oakland. That would be wild if the MLB knew about this before we all did last week. I wonder if more will come out of this later, but either way, the A's probably aren't coming back to Oakland. With that being said, I do agree that the A's didn't really want to be in Oakland, especially when they looked to move to Fremont and then San Jose originally. They probably were going to leave Oakland regardless. If the A's would've been approved to move to even Fremont or San Jose despite the road blocks of either of those two moves back then, they probably would've left Oakland years ago.
@@86byrdman I agree with you Byrd. I think it had a lot to do with the A’s going to Sacramento. I do think MLB knew. An organization that big and that powerful can’t get street information? You are right, the A’s never wanted to stay in Oakland. It could have been like the Niners in Santa Clara, Warriors in SF. Fremont or San Jose could have been that for A’s
Given ownership’s history under Fisher, I still firmly believe he would have relocated the team regardless. Our city’s leadership has been shit for years, and definitely didn’t help, but regardless of this scandal, I believe he was always going to move the team out of Oakland. It’s easier to blame the city with Thao’s clear incompetence but I view her scandal as just another reason our the Town has continued to plunge to the bottom
@@theblackhood4812 I agree, Oakland was always doomed, but as the Niners went to Santa Clara and Warriors went to SF. I really thought Fremont or San Jose could have been worked out for the A’s
It’s always in my opinion that it was the Oakland mayor at fault for the As departure.
@@SuperJK-Man there is a lot to blame in this saga. She is not 100% to blame by any means, but she was the wrong person at the wrong time. It was a perfect storm Super

I still blame budd seeley
Best episode yet! Sully knows baseball, Coy only talked about disappointment in the relocation, Burke was filled with rage at ownership…. You know A’s Baseball!! This feels like Locked on A’s for the first time!! Thank you 🙏
Thank you for the kind comments. Very much appreciated! Thank you !!!
I wish they would give Trevor Bauer a shot at making the team. He was cleared of all charges. Hope to see you at Big League weekend in Las Vegas!
Manfred will never let him back
Dude all day put Bauer at the front of this rotation screw the people who cry about signing him they will cry either way
@@todd1388I wish they did but they won’t. Every team wants and most need him but he embarrassed the League (Manfred). As much as it seems like he can just get signed he can’t.
For sports fans, it's always easy to blame the evil, billionaire owner. That's just how it is. But in this situation, the corrupt, inept city government of Oakland, starting with the former mayor are to blame. Oakland has lost three major sports teams in the past 10 years. There's a common denominator here.
Is Casey Pratt still alive? I never see that dude anymore.
He sold out. He ended up working for Sheng Thao for the Oakland mayor's office, but not sure if Thao being indicted affected his job there
Where you at Brodie?
I felt something was fishy about how Thoa all the sudden was elected Oaklands new Mayor. She sure didn't help matters hmmm? One in her position ought to be aware that others are watching her actions...tred lightly
Democrats ruin everything they touch this is no surprise.
Good point. I think there were also other factors that led to the team leaving. 1) Poor attendance over decades even when the team performed well and the stadium was in better condition. 2) Poor attendance over the last few years motivated by media and YT video creators who encouraged fans to stay away and not give any money to the hated Fisher. 3) Both the Mets and Cubs had periods with ownership issues and poor performance. But the fans still attended. 4) The media and video creators tactic of covering for the city and hating Fisher leading to low attendance backfired. 5) As another poster commented, Stomper is active in Las Vegas and was featured in their holiday community outreach. I expect we will see him at the upcoming Big League Weekend. [Booney - come to the weekend. Last year the SF Chronicle sent Susan Slusser, and she wrote a fair story.]
Baseball Fan. agree 100% with all your points. At the end of the day, that is my whole point. A little bit of everything contributed to the A's leaving. Unfortunately, I will not be able to come to Big League Weekend, but I look forward to the coverage and the upcoming season. I appreciate your comment and like I said, I 100% agree with you.
Stomper did not leave, The Athletics have been doing community outreach events in Las Vegas attended by Stomper as late as a few weeks ago. Fisher and Dean are walking a tightrope paying tribute to a temporary home in Sacramento and I think the patch was a great idea.
Did not know, thanks for that info!
They can relocate to Oblock for all I care but they can’t get rid of stomper
Stomper was cool! Here is the thing, who really knows the history of The Elephant? Do you know what's ironic that I didn't mention in the video? Stomper also symbolized a bridge from generation to generation. The patch now is a bridge. I am sure that it had nothing to do with what Stomper symbolized, but ironic in its own way, I agree with you.
Hmmm, don’t wanna put SCABcramento on the Jerseys or saying it’s just gonna be called the Athletics no city affiliated but they gonna put SCABcramento Patch with one of the Towers on it…… Make up your mind Fisher, or is this just another one of your Lame teases if Vegas falls thru…….oh, I’ve been an A’s Fan since April 17, 1968 waaaaay before the host of this podcast saying he’s been a fan since 81’…I bet he still roots for The LV Traitors who also bailed on Oakland…..The A’s were going to go anyways even if they did have a good relationship with Libby Schaff so don’t try to twist it as ‘MLB knew about Sheng Tao is the reason why the A’s bolted, then why didn’t they get it done with Libby? ……you only have ‘Opinions’ and ‘Your Feelings’ and ‘Theory’s’ what doesn’t mean nothing, you have as much information as a guy nursing his 5th beer at a dive bar
Can we finally put to bed the idea the Fisher is the greedy one and Kaval is the devil? Oh the irony of it all, it is Shen Thao, who is the greedy one and should shoulder all the blame for the A's moving to Las Vegas IMPO.
I think if we look at the history of Oakland and the A's, I believe everyone should shoulder a little of the blame. If Oakland wants to put it 100% on Fisher and if that helps them sleep at night, so be it.
Fisher Still a Scumbag
Holy smokes! This is huge scandalous news!!! That’s why there was a gag order on talking about it!
@@CASPER101 exactly! I didn’t want to go there in the video, but yeah. While it’s all speculation, it does make for a good point.
Stomper will return!
I don't know if this particular abomination was a factor, but Oakland's decline ( and California's?) surely was seen as a harbinger of tough times for the A's.
Good Call!
Colby thomas should be on this roster
@@LetthaWrite1inn doesn’t look like he will start on 40 man, but yeah, I agree with you.
Now get Trevor Bauer to round out the rotation!
Still think the A's are going to add one more to the roster. GM David forst was talking about adding a veteran infielder to pair with max Schumann. Also talk about adding another starting pitcher
Bauer!
@@jasontapia1032 if they do, we will know that the A’s spent this off season to try to improve the roster and win. If they do not, it was all about getting to 105 million to be able to participate in revenue sharing. Hope you are right.
I love the energy from you and the team!! Nice shirt!!
I want the A's to win the division as much as the next guy but don't you think you're being a bit too optimistic? It defiantly seams like on paper the A's are the best team in the AL west and I would agree if the season was just based on paper stats and offseason acquisitions the A's would win, but i'm not sure.
@@jpoo3385 jpoo. 100% agree with you and of course optimistic, but it’s far from a stretch. If someone was to ask you who you think would win the West, who would you say? My prediction is the A’s and is guaranteeing is arrogant? Of course! Point being is I want attention on the A’s on the field, than off it
