There are several suggestions to think about before you setup your own cleaning business are you likely to have help from you family? Are you someone who is self-motivated? Will you stick to your plan? Do you have the money to go ahead? (I learned these and why they work from Ayalisse clean biz website )

How about when the owner or owners put the chore of "training" new people on another cleaning employee who was also never trained, but figured out a good process for themselves? Why, oh why should the more experienced employee who has their own life and time value be expected to train and babysit new employees when they aren't paid to take on the responsibility of showing the new employee how things are done to get them done efficiently and right, then to find things not done, THEN asked by the owner to go through, check the new employee's work and then re-instruct the new person or even be encouraged to do whatever you notice they didn't or else run the risk of getting an annoying call about how this wasn't done or that wasn't done right. This is a common situation if you get a lazy or half-asser on your team too. It's like look, most people working for a cleaning service as a standard employee (not an IC) are getting low pay compared to the standard expectations, demands and serious physical effort put on to a good job done right. The clock is always ticking down and you are constantly physically pushing it to the limit. Especially if you get with a service that likes to offer crazy service promises and you have 4 or 5 houses lined up that day...the owner is usually not ever the one on the ground at that point, if they even ever worked as a professional cleaner themselves at all as many newer owners haven't....and so they just see the job payments coming in and don't have to do the hard ass work promised to the client to sell their services on the first place, no it's the workers in the trenches who make or break that continuing revenue potential....so back to my point, why do owners think it is ok to put the responsibility of training new employees, checking behind and even doing the work the emoyee missed or didn't do well? Anyone in cleaning knows time is $$, right down the the minute, and owners for sure know that if how they book a cleaner's day is any reflection, while they get to keep 2/3 or more of the profit, so why expect your lower paid employee to do your job for you (the training and going behind and checking and fixing) they don't have time for that. Their life's precious time is just as valuable as the owners, so...That will drive a good employee away after a while, even if they feel appreciated for their process and work ethic by the owners and that's why they were asked...after a while anyone would catch on that they are just being given more work to do with no pay increase offered. I figure things like that out right away. Also, I didn't hear anything about paying your cleaning staff well (if possible) instead of trying to get quality cleaning people for as little as humanly possible to keep them around past that first check. Given the general profit margins and the relatively low overhead cost (if you want it to be) why not just break down pay the high performing cleaning people a decent wage for their good work, exceptional reliability, no to very, very little customer complaints over many months, constantly good work quality per the clients, referrals on and on...why try to constantly cheat these types of employees by paying as little as possible? That also drives away star quality employees as they tend to also be bright and ambitious themselves and eventually figure out the owner is making a small fortune compared to them at the end of the week, month or year and they are the ones putting in the sweat, pushing with the clock and also interacting with the client face to face alot of the time. Why do it for someone else when you could be doing it for your self and claim all the $$ in that payment, not just a small hourly portion? Pay the quality workers well. Make it worth their time and effort to do it for you so they can make at least a decent enough wage to consider the pros and cons of working for your cleaning service vs going in to business for themselves when the realization clicks that they are doing most the work while the owner is simply marketing, running to the assessment, buying the supplies and coordinating appointments. You can do that for your own one man show yourself and keep all the money instead of killing yourself for peanuts

Great video so so true. I and my wife own a small residential cleaning company in the Tampa Bay area. We got approached by a new construction builder to clean their homes. Thankfully no contract. Well, they pay extremely well however they love to reschedule over and over again. So here we are me and my wife rescheduling our regular weekly and biweekly customers to accommodate this builder who keeps delaying because the plumber is not done the electrician blah blah blah. We finally did the job but never again. We thought we made good money but we didn't because we spent time at home because the builder canceled over and over again. Lesson learned we are sticking with our loyal weekly and biweekly's because, at the end of the day, they are the ones putting food on our table. Great advice I hope other cleaning companies heed it as well.

I have a question. I have a cleaning company in Massachusetts. I feel like every year its one step forward in the summer and 3 steps back in the winter. Common sense tells me that were we in a warmer climate business would be great all year long. What kind of advice can you give me in regards to this?

    • @guadload2073

That is a common issue not only in the north but also in the south. The are ebs and flows with any business. In franchising, we try to even those variations by being consistent throughout the year with our marketing message and presence.
