Regarding the question of whether capitalists and unions can ever "coalesce" (57:11-1:00:14), I appreciate the fact that Fein is ambivalent on the issue. However, I would only disagree that there's no *inherent* conflict since the two classes have antithetical goals. Higher wages for workers are deemed a "business expense" for capitalists, and this reduces profits for the latter. While it's true that companies have occasionally seen a more stable reciprocity between the parties, it has typically happened under short-lived conditions where either (1) the overall zeitgeist favored such compatibility [precisely, in fact, during the New Deal period] or (2) when unions were essentially "business unions" under which framework leaders were co-opted by their employers. During the long history of American industrialization, peaceful cooperation between labor and capital has been the exception, not the rule. Other countries --- e.g., Scandinavia --- differed inasmuch as their historical backgrounds and cultures were different. I daresay such countries, being lesser competitors on the world stage, could afford to treat workers with greater solicitude. Also, we have to take account of the enormous propaganda campaigns waged by big business in the U.S. over the last half century. Our media have been largely privatized and no longer represent mainstream labor interests. One might object that the internet has expanded knowledge of available options, but the informational overload, together with the lingering power of TV and radio, has likely produced more confusion than unified purpose. Finally, it's not just electronic and print media that have suffered from privatization, but education, where views diverging from those of "free market" ideologues are either marginalized or suppressed altogether. By contrast, media in countries such as France serve the public with greater ideological diversity, raising worker consciousness and catalyzing protest. As a result, social safety nets in these countries remain comparatively strong. This should remind us that it wasn't only FDR who gave us the New Deal --- it was thousands of labor activists in the streets who put enough pressure on Roosevelt to make the necessary concessions. As Frederick Douglass famously maintained: "Power concedes nothing without a demand."

Great info. Thanks for posting. To the question (1:07:17) about New Dealers who served in the military. Bernard Bernstein, a senior Treasury Department lawyer, saw combat in the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. (Josiah DuBois, The Devil's Chemists, pp. 17-18.) His courage under fire didn't save him from an accusation of communist leanings by Rep. Dondero (R-Mich.) in 1947. Nor from congressional criticism in 1955 of his role in proving wartime collaboration between Standard Oil of New Jersey and Nazi chemical cartel IG Farben.

Well he’s incorrect about a great many things. For example, caffeine. In China and other Asian nations, they drink tea almost religiously and it contains caffeine. The rate of stomach cancer is low and life expectancy is high. The highest in earth. So, if they are drinking tea with caffeine daily and living longer it debunks his theory.

I’m really excited about the #NoReparationsNoVote movement in that Black ppl are finally using strategy to obtain reparation victory! ❤️😁 Don’t let up! The pressure is on. EVERYONE can walk away from the table with a win! Dems can gain control again, Joe can become President like he’s always wanted, Kamala can become the first woman VP, Trump will get kicked out of office, and Black Natives will receive their overdue owed reparations check. With God ALL things are possible. With strategy, faith, and prayer this will come to pass. God has GREAT things planned for 2020!
