Philippe Park | Stunning Views, Nature, and Rich History | Highlights of a Hidden Gem
Hey there, my wandering friends! In this video, I'm exploring Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, from it's rich and deep history to some of the many activities you can take part in today at the park.
Philippe Park is a gem among the Pinellas County parks, as much for its history as for its stunning views of Upper Tampa Bay. More than a thousand years ago, the Tocobaga tribe recognized the location's unique attributes and created their largest and most important village here. The ceremonial mound still stands, still offering amazing views of the bay.
The park was always site of the first homestead in what would become Pinellas Park. On this site, Odet Philippe (the park's namesake) built St. Helena Plantation and introduced grapefruit to Florida. If you've ever noticed all of the grapefruit murals around Safety Harbor, this is why.
Today, the park is extremely popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists, families, and groups who want to gather somewhere beautiful. It's a favorite among local residents who walk the mile long park road coffee in hand in the morning or take their dogs for a walk here in the evening. Whatever you plan to do, you'll definitely have a great time at Philippe Park.

So many! I'm heading back this weekend to check out Bonnet Springs Park, Polk Museum of Art, and botanical garden the name of which eludes me at the moment.
I kind of wonder if we have ran into each other on one of these adventures. We seem to visit the same places. This is one of our usual evening walk. Beautiful!
😄😄We probably have! This preserve was a pleasant surprise. I live in Dunedin so this isn't an every day place for me, but it could be! So peaceful and quiet.
We love groom Springs. Especially Astro Skate.
My son went to Astro Skate quite a lot, too, when he was younger. It's a favorite field trip for camps and afterschool programs. Or was when he was in school.
I love this place. We've been quite a lot. My youngest daughter loves the flamingos.
It's such a great place to visit! The flamingoes were so entertaining. Love them!
I used to have dinner at the Kapok Tree restaurant in the 1980's. I didn't know the restaurant has closed. I intend to visit Kapok Park the next time I'm in Clearwater.
It closed back in the '90s. The park is beautiful, though the City of Clearwater has made a big effort to restore it to a more natural habitat. I hope you get a chance to see next time you're in Clearwater.

I used to wade fish the flats near the Skyway bridge. This video shows why I always stopped fishing and got out of the water whenever a lightning storm began.
Lightning is so vicious in this part of Florida!

😂😂 They weren't scary at all. I think just very accustomed to visitors. I have another video (not posted) which shows them flying to a nearby tree as we approached. It's such a beautiful place! I can't wait to go back.

@@wanderflorida It was an enjoyable short trip to see family. I didn't take any sightseeing trips this time around. The wedding was a lot of fun. After postponing it for a year, the bride and groom had the wedding they wanted, with family and friends. Like always, the near mishaps make for fun anecdotes afterwards, as you well know. I shared a few photos with your mom and will subject you all to a few more.

So peaceful here in Kapok Park perfect for an afternoon or morning walk. Or even an afternoon tea watching those turtles enjoying their time swimming.
