Gardening From Square One
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ก.พ. 2023
Hi everyone! My name is Lynn, and I garden in Central Texas, USDA Zone 8b. Our property is part of what we call a "rural burb", in Texas Hill Country. This is the fourth garden that I have started from square one and my first in the South.
Although I have been gardening for many years, my journey gardening in Central Texas Zone 8b began in 2019. I have learned a lot about the soil, climate, and so many other factors that heavily impact successfully growing plants here. I created this channel to take you along with me as I go from a property nothing but dirt, a plethora of weeds, and about twenty-one Texas Live Oaks, to hopefully the garden of my dreams.
I will share a lot of what I have learned, as well as information specific to my climate. I hope everyone following along as I journey through my new space, will find something useful for their gardening journey!
Welcome to my Garden!!!

How to Stop Invasive Bermuda Grass From Doing This?
Mystic Spires is incredibly reliable here in Dallas and blooms from Spring until frost with little care. I highly recommend it.
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey. Happy New year.
I like your butterfly bush, agastache, vitex tree& privet! I am in zone 7A so we have plenty of sunny days and very warm summers but not complaining. No more harsh winters for me! Thanks for showing what is growing in your garden. All is thriving so well!
Beautiful garden!
素晴らしい庭、投稿ありがとうございます。
I appreciate you watching! 🌱
Beautiful flowers
In my experience, if you deadhead a butterfly bush during it’s flowering season, you will will get double the blooms on each branch you deadhead. Each time you deadhead it. It’s pretty cool. I deadhead mine once per week during its flowering season. I get tons of blooms. In your zone, I would also recommend Salvia Amistad, Black and Blue and Amante. They produce abundant blooms which attract hummingbirds, and should do well in your location. I grow them in containers here in zone 5b and winter over the dormant plants in their containers in my unheated, insulated garage. They are stellar performers. I have many deer and rabbits, and even a woodchuck, and they leave these alone. In my zone, they bloom continuously from June until the first hard frost, usually in November. I will give Summertime Blues Vitex a try. Thanks for posting the video!
I have not been great with deadheading due to a knee injury, however this year should be different. I have seen images of Salvia Amistad for years, and consistently am drawn to the beauty of this plant. Maybe 2025 will be the year that I will add it to my garden. Thank you for the suggestion!:)
Everything is looking great!
Good choices for your area, The boxwoods are my favorites for me. You can Lao do lantana in your area. It’s exuberance is unparalleled.
❤love the salvia..someone recently shared tip to plant near roses..helps repel certain rose issues❤
❤zone 6..i love the nepata..gonna try this year..
Great video - where did you purchase the Mystic Spire salvia seeds? They are beautiful!
@@bellarosa009 Hi:) I purchased 3 gallon plants at a local grocery store for $14.98 and divided each into 3 one gallon plants.
So Nice Video❤❤
I'm in central Texas as well and I love love love the mystic spires and vitex trees, I've had great luck with them as well! I will try these others you mention, thanks for sharing!
Vitex is a very underrated shrub/small tree. Great substitute for butterfly bushes.
Hi Lynn I am new to your channel! I live i California zone 9b so your list of plants is very helpful for me! 💙💚💛🧡💜 Liz
Nice job 👍
Thanks!
Nice tip on the diversity for the backdrop wall. Something I did not consider when thinking about what I'd like to do for a privacy screen. TY!
I miss my tea olives I had.. I know they can grow here in ky but I can never find any plants in stores for them.
You might consider searching online or for a local nursery that specializes in hard-to-find plants. I purchased two of mine from HD online.
I just found your channel.. I live in Ky now but lived in Killeen/Ft Hood texas for nearly 25 yrs.. I do miss Texas but Ky is lovely too.
Welcome! It’s great to have you join the channel.
I really enjoy your channel! Thanks for sharing!
So Wonderful❤❤
I appreciate you watching! 🎄
Everything looks so beautiful and full of color! Over here, the deer destroyed half of everything. I will enjoy your garden, and plan for next year. I wish I could have roses!
👍👍👍🌹🌹🌺🌺🦋🦋
So nice to see the flower in blooming by end of year!
I have a “pink” crepe Myrtle in my yard too. And a lot of the same plants as in your garden. I live in Northern California Zone 9b. Thanks for the tips on aphids, they are very helpful. I hope your channel grows!
over the top for the bermuda, or grass be gone. i would try to get ahead of that problem. if the plant dies, job opening. bermuda can have 6 foot deep roots. another thing to try is 6ml black plastic to smother it out. have to leave it all summer though.
Really enjoyed your garden tour 🌿🌿
Hi I live in Montgomery County just north of Houston and have the same deer issue. The worst is the rubbing during rut. All my trees are covered in wire or they get destroyed by the bucks. Magnolias and Sycamore trees seem to get the most attention. I agree with junipers especially red cedars are wonderful and deer resistant. Have you tried silverberry (eleagnus commutata)? It’s my favorite deer resistant shrub. Fast growing, loves sun, and flowers in the fall and very fragrant. The variant I have is thornless and is not invasive but very dense. If you’re wanting a hedge deer won’t penetrate it or eat, I’d highly recommend it.
Hi! I can relate to the deer rubbing. I had a couple of younger trees in my front yard that had to be protected. I have not grown Silverberry, however, it has made my list for consideration. At that time, I think a different plant was selected due to mature size or leaf color ... :-/
Wow! What a stunning garden you have! 🌸🦋🌸
Thanks, it's been a labor of love!
Looks so peaceful!
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
It's looking wonderful, I want to sit on that bench! 😁
Thank you!:)
Looking awesome! We always go very gentle when digging for a new plant. Sorry the pipe broke. Oh.... the bench is perfect right there!
Absolutely STUNNING display and I LOVE how you have them spaced with the pebble mulch between. WOW. I need to know how many plants you have in each grouping. Is it just one plant? If it is - WOWZA regarding the spread and coverage for each plant. Please let me know. THANK YOU for posting. I just bought several of these and am planning spacing.
@@kar1922 Hi! There are 11 Rockin Playin the Blues Salvia scattered throughout this bed primarily in groups of 3. This plant rapidly grew to about 4'x4' in my full sun bed here in zone 8b. This salvia is stunning, and is in bloom from Spring until the first hard frost.
it's looking good! Do you get water restrictions? We do down here. HEB has great options and great prices! Beautiful!
@@TheLivingBackyard Thank you:) We had major water restrictions last year, but nothing this year beyond designated watering days etc. I have found that while HEB does not have the selection of local nurseries, there are often very healthy plants that are well-suited for the region, at great prices!
@@GardeningFromSquareOne Exactly! Healthy plants, and prices that are hard to pass! lol

Thank You for sharing. I have deers that love to play and graze in my front garden
Nice 👍❤
Beautiful flowers 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Hi, thanks for info. How much did you water the vitex?
Hi! This past Summer, when watering was allowed, I gave the Vitex a one gallon jug of water once a week.
Yes, same here. I have been trying cardboard and weed plastic, but the runners are all over... except where you want them! 😵💫 We have been working on several flowerbeds with different levels of sucesos 😅
The Bermuda will run right under the plastic. Some people have luck with cardboard. I found termites munching on the cardboard at my previous gardening space. Good luck!
Great video! I have been battling deer for a while, and seems like these over here didn't get the memo on what not to eat! lol Just yesterday I found my baby agave dug out! ugh! Seems like we are same planting zone, so, I'm your new sub! So happy I bumped into your channel!
