Model Railroad and Prototype video's
Steve Johnson's Op Session 12-11-24
Steve models the Union Railroad located near Pittsburg in HO scale. I don't know why I don't video entire railroad as a lead in. I actually did not get the entire layout only the sections we switched. The switching puzzles are challenging but very doable if you think things out in advance. Jim Kleeman and I switched one area, and Bob Kaplan switched the other side of the peninsula. While Morris Spence switched the yard. All of these areas create quite a challenge. Steve can only accommodate I would guess more than 6 operators but that makes things very tight and up close and personal. Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Whatever holiday you and your family celebrate I wish you a happy celebration and prosperous New Year.

Op's Session on Larry Thompson's HO Western Maryland Railroad 12-11-24

Today we had the opportunity to operate on Larry's layout. Steve Johnson, John Ritter, Dennis Yeager and myself. I was videoing and operating at the same time, so my switching suffered a bit. At the beginning of the video, I included a quick tour of the 33'x33' layout. I am headed out to Steve's layout tomorrow for an op session which will be very fun and interesting. I have attended one previo...

Operating session on Joe Discher's HO Scale Layout

As you will see and hear it is organized chaos and so much fun! As always our layouts don't always cooperate. The bane of model railroaders especially when you have visitors! After lunch we discussed the expansion of the layout and how best to make the connection. Joe needed to add a track connection which we planned out. John is going over one day soon to install the connection. We are at Larr...

Yesterday I had an operation session with my round robin group and two visitors Steve Johnson and Rick Barton. Thanks to all that attended and a special thanks to my operating crew (Dennis, John, Larry and Mo). This video shows the p...

My good friend Jim Kleeman and I visited Chicago last Monday-Thursday. We videoed and took what seemed like a zillion photos. I alone shot 114 videos! I decided to include all of the videos I took so the post is well over an hour. As you will see in the post we saw freight and passenger trains. At Elmhurst it was almost like streetcars with one train after another. We did have a strange encount...
Model Railroad Layouts: Western Maryland/ Chessie System Layout Update 6/1/24
มุมมอง 1.1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just a short update on my layout. Most of the improvements consist of adding Woodland Scenics Hedgerows. I also changed the industry adjacent to the helix to a beer distributor and now have one track enter the building. As I mention I an not sure what type on industry to have the adjacent industry track serve. The is not much room there for a building. Take care everyone!

It is very informative and entertaining in my opinion. It will be a 5 part series with relatively short videos. The main goal of the series is to let new model railroaders understand just how far the hobby has progressed in the...

G'day Fred, Merry Christmas. Thanks for posting. I enjoy operations videos. I thought that Steve Johnson's layout is nicely detailed. cheers Ken 😃
G'day Ken! Merry Christmas. Steve's layout is very interesting and as I noted a challenge to operate. He has been a locomotive engineer for various railroads for a lot of years and has brought that knowledge to his railroad. The things that work and those that don't. On top of all that he is a great person. Thanks for watching!
Awesome layout thanks for the video.😊😊👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic layout. Love how he made the background flats three dimensional with the extra piping and details. Thanks for sharing.
Those details do make the backdrop buildings look more realistic but if you notice we had trouble reaching one of the switch throws. So when you add those types of details you need to consider the placement if you plan on having operating sessions. Thanks for watching!
Great to see that familiar layout from a different angle today!
Glad you enjoyed!
hi fred !!! i am an avid steve johnson fan and catch all his videos as i am retired now and use them as a learning tool.... what is up with the derailments ? you could hear him say prior to the first one say " this railroad always has derailments" and then it occurs !!! please provide the skinny !!!
Generally, it is the trucks on the cars and human error. We did discover an issue with a diamond crossing were one of the locos I was running derailed each time crossing the diamond in one direction. Could have been track gauge or wheel gauge on the locomotive. I'm sure Steve has fixed this.
@@fredeisen7401 10-4 thank you and merry christmas
@@dennisarmes3473 MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Very cool Fred!
That was the second time I had the pleasure of doing an operating session with Steve. He is such a great guy.
Wow, very beautiful layout, looks like great fun to operate. Is there a dedicated YT channel for that layout?
Unfortunately no. I will post videos on Larry's layout periodically.
Mega great concept ! There are still a few more hours of work to be done to complete it, I fear. Wishing them success and a lot of courage.
The layout is in essence Larry's job. He works on it everyday if I remember correctly, he has gotten to this point in a little over a year. Pretty incredible in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
@@fredeisen7401 Really incredible ! He must work day and night ! Fantastic job !
Fun video to watch. Love all of the old 'F' units. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching John!
Awesome hobby store you got.
Thanks Brian!
@fredeisen7401 your welcome
Is this the same White Rose Hobbies I delt with in the 80's & 90's that made NASCAR die cast via Matchbox??? Still have about everything they did. Thanks
I don't think so. Ryan Thoman is the owner and started the business 15 years ago. Was the store you delt with in York PA?
Great store! I love visiting and I’ve been a happy customer a few years now.
Thank You!! We appreciate talking with you and your purchases.
Just received an order…didn’t know you are an actual brick-and-mortar shop. Love it! I’ll save your link for future goodies!

Looks like you guys really have a good time. Thant is the way it should be. Feel sorry for the guy who was always hunched over because he is so tall. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Fred!
Hey Ely!!
G'day Fred, Looks like you guys had fun. Thats what it should all be about. Hats off to you all for contending with the low ceiling and at the 3.04 minute point I thought that there was a table extending into the aisle.😀 Cheers Ken😃
Three of the guys are tall, the rest of us do not have an issue with the cross beams. LOL! Thanks for watching Mate!
@@fredeisen7401 No worries. Keep up the good work. Cheers Ken
How big is the layout? What kind of command system do you use?
I am not sure of the size of the layout but would guess 15' x 24'. He is planning an expansion of roughly the same size. Joe uses North Coast Engineering's command station as do all of the guys in the group with the exception of one who uses Digitrax.
@fredeisen7401 Nice.
Hi

Wow, very nice and impressive layout. Looks like you guys had great fun!
We always have fun together. We BS as much as run trains or construct each others layout. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for sharing this op session, I enjoyed it! Mike
Your welcome Mike. Thanks for watching.
Gosh that looks like fun, and on a great layout too!
I never really understood why people would operate their layout until I attended an op session. I was hooked then and designed my layout to accommodate operations. I have 40 industries on the layout to serve. Thanks for watching!
@fredeisen7401 I'm with you. Watching trains run is fun for about 5 minutes. Operating them in a realistic manner and for a prototypical purpose is fun all day. I don't have a crew yet, but my layout was designed to be operated, not just to watch trains run.
Thanks for posting. Great to see model railroading in reality. I guess that these are two man crews using switch lists.
Actually they were one man crews. Brian had two of his experienced operators mentor us.. Everybody did a great job.
enjoyed the update.
Thanks!
A great time!
I agree! Thanks for participating!
Looks like there’s quite a few new members
Larry was added about a year ago and we added Rick yesterday. I invited Steve to attend anytime he wants, but his layout while amazing can only accommodate a few people at a time so a large group would not work otherwise I would ask him to be part of the group.
I would like to see more videos like this and longer ones too.
I am posting on tomorrow about the same length. I will try to shoot longer ops videos in the future. Thanks for watching!
They need to identify the locomotive types and cars.
No mentioning of any type of railroad paints
We carry Tru-color paint.
