Unstoppable- Inside the mind of the extreme triathlete - The Altitude Chamber
In endurance sport, preparation is essential for success.
Trying to replicate the toughest elements of your challenge in your training, is difficult, but pays dividends.
The 'Patagonman' triathlon would see me compete at strength sapping altitudes. Thankfully, I had access to an altitude chamber for what was a very useful, but completely exhausting session. Altitude chambers can be found up and down the country and are definatly worth checking out.

Awesome work
Congrats on 1st place! 😂 well done sir it was such a mental battle
Your crew buddy is a superstar ! And I loved the emotion when youre talking about your family cos at the end of the day thats really the best 'why' 🤗
I'm a native of Telemark, Mt Gausta is my favorite mountain and I've scaled it many times. I simply cannot image doing so at the end of the Norseman! My sister's son crashed in Zombie Hill one year, then he got a top-10 finish the next year. Two of his cousins (my son and my brother's son) ran more or less the entire marathon together with him, but this angered a semi-pro from Germany who complained. The next year they made this illegal. That said, getting a black shirt after turning 50 is an amazing achievement, bravo!
Hearing this lockdown talk now is so ridiculous in retrospective. We were all treated like children, shocking that we accepted that
The lock downs were put in place so you can make this statement I am so sure that if they were not put into place for your health it wouldn’t be so ridiculous.
You would have been one of the unlucky ones
nostalgia
Hope he didn't take the experimental in the arm. Oh dear.
Did you think to check the weather report?
Muy buena historia deportiva e inspiradora. Me encanto
Brave sportsman, and getting f..ed in the a… with mindless covid restrictions; congratulations;
You and those who are with You are so Inspiring. I want to do this so badly because of all I've seen and all ive felt doing it myself. Youre so great!!! ❤🎉
This is such a fantastic priduction. Thank you so much!
Whyt do this in the winter. I know its covid...... But why and with a storm coming... Is it just a egotrip? I cant se how this is a good thing to do sorry not impressed. To sit in front of a camera in this video and complain how cold and the wind....... sorry egotrip
it’s about doing what no one else would do, it’s about growing your mind and putting yourself through difficult shit so other things are easier. i bet you he’s significantly stronger mentally now for races with better conditions
would welcome a detailed video on your nutrition strategy...and any views on keto nutrition stratergy
My guy
Cool
I really enjoyed this and will take away as much as I can for this race season - some great advice and actually delivered in language I can relate to and understand. I love the idea of the positive thought bank, on race day I often find myself in some dark places questioning my life choices but will definitely put this into practice. I look forward to watching more of your videos!
I loved everything about this film, I liked how it was segmented with good advice, guidance, wisdom and action. I will keep this in my library forever. It not only applies when I'm pushing myself physically but also when I'm leading a team at work or other wise. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comments Yvonne, the team are absolutely delighted you found the film valuable.
Really enjoyed watching your Shieldaig sufferfest (whilst sitting on the turbo). I didn’t expect the Celtman Segway halfway through. A welcome surprise as I’m training now for my third Celtman June 2024. Now you’ve visited Shieldaig in the winter why not pop up next summer for a wee triathlon? 😂
Excelent documentary. I felt absolutely identified. I was also going to run Patagonman as my first major triathlon after COVID. I finally run it in 2022, by far the hardest and most beaultiful triathlon of the world. I finished as exhausted and cold as you in scotland. By the way, Patagonman conditions are not warm as you mention on the video. The condutions are very simmilar to your solo 70.3 you raced in scotland.
What an incredible story and achievement, well done Greg! Also, this documentary is absolutely phenomenal!
Just want to say love this bit of content
Thank you Gerry
OMG MR BALL IS THAT YOU?!?! 😱
Great video, and only losing 25 places on the run leg is incredible considering the battle you went through (you were 105 at end of T2). Congrats on the black t-shirt, 100% deserved especially as you overtook 4 people on that climb!!! A few thoughts if i may... Running with road shoes / cleats is the worse thing you can do as it stop your natural foot roll and puts a lot of strain on your achilles / calf area. One compromise is to use MTB shoes (not the new ones, those we had 10 years ago) as they are better for foot roll, and if you transistion is on grass, it is really compliant and saved me a lot of muscles pain. Did your team look into cassette / crank ring gear ratio considering this is essentially a mountain ride? (13-34 cassette with 44-32 chain ring or even 40-30 and as light as possible too: SRAM red is super light and shimano compatible, in worst case a 42-32-22t triple chain ring could also have been an ultra safe option) You seem to be grinding a lot, hence the pain. A lot of people who are passing you have a higher cadence, and it seems smaller chainrings relative to yours? I am sure you are aware that Chris Froom is a hardcore spinner, with very high cadence, big cassette and small chain rings, and he won a few tour de France with that setup. Spin to win is nowadays a stable of high level biking, even in triahtlon. High spinning cadence also helps with muscle fatigue, alleviating / slowing down lactic acid release and crucially a 90-95 cadence on a bike is excellent to stop that jelly leg feeling when starting to run. Being aero is cool but in the mountains, spin to win is king. Also, not sure a full aero helmet in a hot day on the mountain is a great choice for heat dissipation and fighting hyperthermia, did you have a non aero backup helmet? Why not change from tri-suit to a pair of short /running vest combo (ok, 1min lost maybe)? how much of an advantage is a soaked tri-suit when running a hilly route? You could also make the argument, that in the case of a typical norseman weather, a set of fresh, dry running clothes would be welcome and bring a bit of heat to your body.
41:30: The weirdest experience aka. normal Norwegian outdoor training session in the winter. Awesome accomplishment, excellent video. Keep them coming!
Excellent documentary, very inspiring! I myself is ex swimmer (sprinter) swam for national team and had a 14 year carrier winning national titles and qualifying for Europeans and world championships... In recent years got into running and now got a TT bike and signed up for 70.3 Ironman... Lets see how it goes:), I guess my biggest fear is the fact that I will have to run without any music (typically listen to my tunes...) Any advise for this? Thanks again for awesome video!
train without music, when I go on a run below 8-10km I only have my keys and watch with me. No phone, no headphones, no music.
@@freyagoffin6948 I’ll give it a go … see how that goes :) Thanks for commenting. Have an excellent weekend
Hi Greg, at 16 mins in you mention about the calf issue / injury. What is / was the actual prognosis of it ? The reason I ask is because every now and then I suffer from a what feels like a knot or pull accruing in my right calf, deep inside (maybe the soleus muscle) and then I’ll have that pulled muscle/ dull ache feeling. It’s not debilitating and eventually I can run through it but it hangs around for days after, sometimes weeks.
How’d those vaccines work out You know the ones Don’t stop you getting or transmitting it Gotta love you gullible fools
Respect for finishing Norseman
Amazing documentary! Keep it up 👍
Thank you
another epic vlog ! well done Prof!!
You are amazing unstoppable is an understatement what an amazing effort both physically and mentally, super inspiring thanks
What an inspirational Film! I am currently fast approaching 50 and have signed up for a local standard Tri with a view to tackling a longer distance in the future. Both this film and the Norseman Film you made have been very informative, that even top class athletes face the same metal challenges as us mere mortals. Though I think if my gloves were filling with more and more icy water, im not sure my resilience would have been as strong! Well done and looking forward to seeing what you attempt next!
Update.., Listening to your advice and the guys over at GTN I manged to finish 9th overall and 1st in age group! Thank you Greg and all the best to you and the team!
Very well done! Congrats Greg. Hope one day we can meet you in Patagonia
Thank you Ignacio, I hope we meet in Patagonia too.
I just signed up for my first ever marathon, so I really need this! I've never run anywhere near that far - I did couch to 5k last year in an effort to lose weight and get fit, and to my enormous surprise I absolutely loved it. I run as often as I can, and have started doing strength training too, and I've never felt better! But the marathon is absolutely terrifying... which is why I need to do it. I'm 39 and struggled with mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and late diagnosed ADHD, to the point where my life just fell apart after my partner died, and I just couldn't seem to get it back. Running has been the single best thing I have found for calming my mind and managing my mental wellbeing, it's just incredible. I'm trying to rebuild my life at last, and reframe how I view myself - not as a failure, or even a survivor, but as a courageous, strong fighter. Running a marathon is my way of achieving this while raising money for a mental health charity. I'm so excited and so terrified, but I have a training plan, enough time, and now some tools for the mental side of it. I just need to go for it. Thank you so much! Good luck to everyone who has taken on an epic challenge and is currently terrified too - you've got this! See you on the finish line!
Good luck in the marathon. It sounds like you have planned your training and are preparing well. When it starts to get tough remember that more is in you. Plus, break the run down into short-term goals - one step forward is a step closer to the finish - you've got this
I wish I had the mindset to do these.
Everyone has the potential Murat. Start with belief and you can develop the mindset to succeed
all the fun starts with a short walk, jog .. ride .. you can do it ...
👏👏👏
Incredible accomplishment Prof. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible as usual. You are a complete headcase mind you 😜 Definitely inspires me to keep working hard doing my training routine. I will think of you in all that pain in that Transporter van when I am struggling and will keep pushing hard. Dip into that Happy Bank 😉 Never give up. 💪🏻 Great production mate, top class film. 👌🏻
Thanks Darty. Keep up the good work. Gx
Fantastic watch , well done Greg another fantastic achievement what an inspiration you are. Indeed what is next!
Thank you. Gx
Super interesting. Really looking forward to watching this. Thanks Greg :-) x
Greg- Thank you for a fabulous honest account of all you have endured pre /during & after the event. Well Done Buddy amazing job spot on. All or nothing atall!!
Truly inspiring
Looking forward to this
Best documentary of its kind I have seen. What an incredible achievement. Well done Greg and team and thank you for taking us with you on such a journey.
“So what’s next? “ Every endurance athlete can relate- going from - “I’m never doing this again” to “what’s next”👏🏾👏🏾
Well done Greg! Just watched this having got a White T-shirt this year, brought it all flooding back. Wow we had the polar opposite weather this yr, driving rain and -2degree temps at the top of the first climb! You’ve only gone and made me want to go back for Black! 😉
Fabulous, inspiring and moved by this wonderful achievement.
"there was just a nagging voice in the back of my mind...... and that nagging voice was saying to me...so what's next?" LOL, TOTALLY know what you mean! Well Done!
