White Stork Ciconia ciconia nesting in Sussex
มุมมอง 4334 หลายเดือนก่อน
The landscape in a small but expanding part the Low Weald in Sussex has changed for the better over the last decade. Laura Vaughan-Hirsch explained how nesting White Storks are part of this change and how there is optimism for biodiversity rather than gloom and decline. On the Knepp Estate a bold transition from arable and dairy farming to a new landscape with a mosaic of unfenced fields honed ...
BOC and the Linnean Society; Dr Catherine Sheard; What Can Birds’ Nests Teach us About Evolution?
มุมมอง 1416 หลายเดือนก่อน
Most birds build a nest, a key adaptation protecting eggs and chicks from predators and harsh environments. From the collections of Victorian naturalists to the popularity of bird’s nest soup, human fascination with nests has generated many hypotheses on the role that nests play in avian ecology and evolution. Thanks to new data and computational techniques, we can now begin to test these ideas...
BOC; Keith Betton; Saving the Stone-curlew
มุมมอง 1799 หลายเดือนก่อน
Keith Betton was County Recorder for Hampshire from 2010-2022 and is currently Chair of the Hampshire Ornithological Society. Since 2009 he has also been part of a small RSPB team that conserves the Stone-curlews that breed in the Wessex region. With help from external funding, the RSPB set up the conservation programme to save the Stone-curlew in the early 1990s, working with farmers and lando...
A Wild Dove Chase by Will Smith Special Event with the Linnean Society
มุมมอง 101ปีที่แล้ว
A special lecture in collaboration with the Linnean Society: On Rock Doves and the process of ‘extinction by hybridisation’. The Rock Dove (Columba livia) is the wild form of the domestic pigeon. Unlike the domestic pigeon, which is one of the most well-studied birds, the Rock Dove has been overlooked by biologists in recent decades. Following hybridisation with feral domestic pigeons, Rock Dov...
Dr Richard Sales and Steve Watson introducing their ground breaking book The Peregrine Falcon.
มุมมอง 607ปีที่แล้ว
The Peregrine Falcon is a comprehensive 528-page book on this most iconic raptor and it investigates all aspects of Peregrine life, from plumage, through diet, population dynamics, breeding and survival. Modern technology (inertial measurement units built by RS) and analyses of breathing, bone structure and eyesight have been used to study the flights, particularly stooping hunts, which have ma...
BOC; Robert Prŷs-Jones; Wallace’s Sarawak bird collections
มุมมอง 110ปีที่แล้ว
Abstract: The integration of information from the diaries/notebooks of important 19th-century ornithologists with that from their specimens and accompanying labels can provide intriguing insight into the development of their interest in, and knowledge of, avifaunas. Two key examples, involving major collections now largely held by the Natural History Museum at Tring, comprise Allan Octavian Hum...
BOC; Michael Cherry; What can be done about range declines in South Africa’s forest-dependent birds?
มุมมอง 532 ปีที่แล้ว
Abstract: Over half of South Africa’s forest-dependent birds have suffered range declines over the past thirty years. These declines have been concentrated in the Eastern Cape Province, despite an 18% increase in forest cover there over the same period. We suspect that the cause of local forest bird extinctions may be habitat degradation arising from informal harvesting of forest products. Natu...
Prof Jared Diamond - What’s so special about New Guinea birds?
มุมมอง 3782 ปีที่แล้ว
Abstract: The tropical island of New Guinea has for a long time played a preeminent role in ornithology, which caused it to be chosen as the site for the BOU’s Jubilee Expedition in 1909. Part of the reason is New Guinea’s many species of extraordinary birds, such as its birds of paradise, whose male ornamental plumages carry sexual selection to extremes; its bowerbirds, whose males build the m...
BOC; Martin Stervander; The evolutionary history of a remarkable radiation of South Atlantic finches
มุมมอง 1372 ปีที่แล้ว
Abstract: Ask anyone interested in birds for an example of adaptive radiations, and they will probably mention the Darwin’s Finches, the evolutionary rock stars of the Galápagos Islands. But did you know about the Nesospiza finches, endemic to Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic? Tristan is a small and very isolated archipelago comprising three islands, the two smaller of which are each home...
BOC; Kathryn Rooke 'The Importation of the Plumage (Prohibition) Act of 1921'
มุมมอง 1162 ปีที่แล้ว
In the Victorian and Edwardian period, a demand for bird feathers in fashionable millinery led to the most luxurious of plumes being worth, quite literally, their weight in diamonds. Demand for feathers of egrets, birds of paradise, hummingbirds, grebes and more, were pushing bird populations across the world to the brink of extinction. In this talk, I share records from the Natural History Mus...
BOC; Ken Smith 'Bars and spots: varying fortunes of our British woodpeckers'
มุมมอง 7513 ปีที่แล้ว
Compared with the rest of north-west Europe, Britain has a relatively impoverished woodpecker avifauna with only three widespread species-Green Picus viridis, Great Spotted Dendrocopos major and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers Dryobates minor. Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers are increasing in Britain, whereas Lesser Spotted is in ongoing serious decline and is Red-listed. Ken drew on the long-te...
BOC; Alex Lees 'Does bird feeding help or hinder avian conservation?'
มุมมอง 7183 ปีที่แล้ว
This talk discussed emerging evidence for positive and negative impacts resulting from the provisioning of wildlife with food, water and breeding sites in our gardens. While some provisioning is targeted at single species of conservation concern, generalised provisioning is far more common and can exceed the local availability of natural resources for recipient species. This generalised provisi...
BOC; Steve Portugal 'Bird Flight and Co-operative Aerodynamics'
มุมมอง 1783 ปีที่แล้ว
The talk discussed how birds co-operate and the mechanisms they employ to save energy during flight. The distinctive V formation of bird flocks has long intrigued researchers and continues to attract both scientific and popular attention. Through the use of novel biologging technology, and by working with the reintroduction scheme for the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis Geronticus erem...

Abernethy Forest is a nature reserve managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The forest has more Caledonian pinewood than any other area in Scotland. The trees in these remaining fragments are lineal descendants of an ancient forest that once spread across the Highlands of Scotland. Since the Bronze or Iron Age, the forest has been used by people for hunting, exploitation of t...

What an amazing story of ecological disaster
Tusind tak, Prof Jon Fjeldså This is a fascinating and enligheting presentation, even for a non scientist as I am. I just ordered your book and am looking forward to diving into it. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your passion Patrice

I enjoyed this lecture very much. first time I have do watched online! Thank you Mrs Mary Muller
Really nice and interesting talk. Thanks
wow! thx for this video, it made clear a bunch of things i didn't know before!
Wonderful presentation. Thank you for sharing
Video unfortunately cuts off before the British Ornithologists Club members' questions which were highly critical of the arguments Pat presented and of the omission of evidence which did not support his case. For example, several of Bristow's specimens were not even of the 'right' (most probable) subspecies.
Were can I find more of these presentation from Julian Hume. Very good presentation.
