Most of the fear that people have of city downtowns is manufactured by media. Suburbanites and rural people really think that the stuff they see in movies and crime shows on TV is real, when it's grotesquely exaggerated. They come downtown and see one homeless person or some burnout hanging around a corner, or get asked for a loonie by a panhandler and then run screaming back to their "safe" suburbs where there are ten times as many drug dealers, addicts and alcoholics, but they are living in houses. I reality, the violent crime rate in the downtowns of Canadian big cities is LOWER than in many small cities and towns. I live in one of those "sketchy" neighbourhoods. Yesterday, I was sitting outdoors at my favourite cafe, and an old man collapsed on the sidewalk. He was poorly dressed and looked like a "bum." People quickly stopped to help and, seeing that he couldn't get up, phoned for help. Police and ambulance came quickly, and treated him with kindness and dignity. Someone working in a pizza place nearby came out and gave him a slice while he was lying on the gurney. The cop wrapped it up so he could eat it when he reached the hospital. People in our neighbourhood care for each other. I can't say the same for some small towns I've lived in, which were full of bigotry and snobbery.
