Merge Conflict is a weekly discussion with Frank and James on all things development, technology, & more. After years of being friends, Frank and James finally decided to sit down and start a podcast about their lives as mobile developers using C#, Xamarin, and .NET MAUI. Much more than just another mobile development podcast, Merge Conflict, reaches all areas of development including desktop, server, and of course mobile. They also cover fun things happening in the world of technology and gaming and whatever else happens to be on Frank's and James' minds.

Fine Tuning Minimal App Requirements | Merge Conflict ep. 408
The Mac Mini's have always been where I live in Apple world. Back in like 2010 ish I went into a local Apple store looking for the lowest model of Mac Mini. The person helping me looked around and said "hmmm.... hold on one sec". I then watched as he walked over to the "boss" and he nodded his head and looked over at me. They walked over and said "Im so sorry we dont have any more of that model but we will sell you the high model for the same price if that works for you"...I was like....yup that works for me. haha. That single interaction sold me on Apple for a long time. Use to be amazing customer service.
A tutorial in Stockholm syndrome. Of course, I suffer from this too: in the absence of any other manufacturer providing a competitive product, I will inevitably go full hypocrite and buy Apple silicon at some point. Apple's pricing depends on their evil business ethos, which we continue to tolerate. I've always loved building/hacking/upgrading my own PCs to get best value, including upgrading RAM and SSD in macs. None of the big companies like that, and they are all ramping up their war against that. If Microsoft could enforce use of their App store (which they tried to get going with Windows 8 and UWP), they would. Apple is ramping up their war against users being able to install unsigned apps. We have to make access to our own purchases, for upgrade or repair, a government protected right (along with guaranteed universal health care). Bring back Roosevelt and Attlee.
Wow Ive been listening for a while but not paying much attention to the video. The hair is GLORIOUS Frank!
Thanks so much
Would love to see a video of you updating from .NET 8 to .NET 9 for a MAUI app...
Passwords does have an authenticator feature: Codes
I knew you were kidding 😂 we all learned already that nothing can stop your energy James 🙏🎉
Great show thanks guys :) I could honestly listen to Frank talk tech for hours, it is so much more interesting than whatever Apple have promoted this week. Keep the deep dives coming!
Glad you enjoy it!
as iphone users we've finally been given the freedom to customize our phones, you can litterally have custom icons. but now we're complaining about that? Can apple ever win? That "button" is a drop shadow button it doesn't touch the background, it puts a drop shadow on your icon to make them pop.
US English only for Apple "Intelligence" when it comes? Wow. What is the point of an AI that can't spell English words correctly?
Yes - FileZilla supports SSH file transfer.
I tried posting a link to the TitleBar info on github, but I'm guessing you either have Block Links on for the channel or TH-cam shadow deleted. In any event, if you could add stuff like that to the podcast shownotes (if it's handy!), that would be cool. I was hoping it might be here when it wasn't on the audio-only version. Admittedly, it wasn't super hard to find (I think I searched ".NET 9 Preview 7" and went from there), but barriers to entry and all that... Thanks for the info!
More importantly how do I get rid of the annoying banner in VS telling me Xamarin is out of support? I know its out of support, I'm working on a .NET 8 version and need to check the old code ffs. Also the annoying banner telling me to launch an emulator, I will open and close an emulator when I want to, not you. VS2022 is so annoying to work in now.
Apple's behaviour is predatory capitalism, because they can and nobody in the US will stop them. I agree that taking a huge cut of all revenue generated on Apple hardware is repugnant, and life threatening to smaller companies like Patreon, who seem to be a benevolent actor in the world, by enabling creativity to continue outside of huge corporations. I would suggest that everyone stops buying new Apple hardware, though I suspect even fan boys who can see or will discover the malevolent behaviour by Apple, are now too addicted to the cult. Not that Microsoft are much better when given half a chance.
Google just changed the name
I'm working on .NET Aspire Docs updates to "demystify exemplars" - it feels like a magical term.
Clear
Do you guys ever look around when you are in public at the people of all ages completely locked into their phone and think "wow...I dont think I want to contribute to this anymore"? Smart phones have just infiltrated every part of life and it seems like something that just by its nature tends to be all consuming. Couples laugh about how they lay down in bed and then stare at their phones. Even to the point where I think its rare to not see people with their phone up in front of their face while they drive. Not just kids either. Im shocked car accidents havent gone through the roof. Maybe I am just getting older and my views are changing but I am becoming more and more interested in physical things that I can touch and feel like an in-person relationship or growing a garden or fixing up an old car. OR technology that goes along side of my life and makes it better but doesnt define it. Maybe Im just old. :)
I think TH-cam is by far the most used app on my apple tv. Good to know there are more of us out there.
I watched a TH-cam from a guy that downloaded all of this google data and in addition to his pics and music and stuff it included tons of xml files of stuff he bought on Amazon, eBay and other places. Plus audio from every hey google he ever did. Kinda weird. I’ll see if I can find that again and reference him.
😱😱😱
Only recently discovered your podcast but it’s quickly become my favourite. Feels like I’m sitting down with a few friends for a chat every time. Keep it up :)
Glad you enjoy it!
I always thought the whole "Macs are for 'creatives'" was a little cringy. They were geniuses in marketing that made people want to spend a lot of money to get that feeling of being in the creative club. Plus the hardware has always been pretty good. The whole "it just works" thing bugged me too. Maybe I am an outlier but UNTIL windows 11, I had way fewer issues on Windows than Mac. Something must be done about the file explorer in Windows 11. Its rough.
TH-cam is my go-to platform for interviews/podcasts, so thank you! It's really nice to see your faces each week. The added context of facial expression goes a long way
I am here seeing you with my ears...or whatever you said
))) yeah. me too. but I normally just come to hit the like and see faces for couple seconds (or minutes) and then I will be back to listen to the episode on my podcast app anyway... but I guess some folks only watch here - that's cool
Finally a good tech interview. Good stuff.
GPT 3 actually is 16k tokens, not 32k? You just said you knew this off the top of your head despite you not knowing? Don't be so foolish into thinking you know more than you do.
cool
You passingly mentioned Jupiter notebooks, which I can wholeheartedly recommend (technically Polyglot notebooks) for creating simple, one off, script-like dotnet applictions. I generally even have one "scratch" notebook active in VSCode for simple C# one liners that I want to run, but I've also created simple applications to, for example, download and rename a bunch of files or make a series of API calls.Highly recommended!
🤣It would be cool to show what you see through the glasses.
Spectre console looks neat! I generate so many tiny iterative reports that I dump to csv so this could help me iterate faster
On the Spotify (at least) versions with the intro music: the Adobe voice filter turns it into some kind of nightmare. Maybe don't apply the voice filter to the parts without vbice.
Yeah :( I realized that after :( whoops! I am now doing it with out the audio parts lol
LOL for the jackets😂😂😂😂
Thanks for responding to the comment, the rant made me laugh ^_^
Respect James for subjective view of tesla experience
Next time, just as a point of comparison, try renting a Tesla. You can put in your route, tell it how much battery you want when you arrive and it will route you to the superchargers you need on the way, works it all out for you. It preheats the battery before you arrive, only charges what you need. You pull up, plug in, charge, unplug and drive off. All money is taken care of by the car's computer, charged to the account automatically. Pretty much all of the hassle you described is removed, and it is how you imagine the experience should be. The Tesla network is opening to other manufacturers now so hopefully it will be more common soon!
Congrats Frank
Thanks for answering my question! Yeah we have quite a few apps to balance. For us, workload is the largest factor. Always shorthanded! :) I am in the kind of group where we do it all...coding, testing, coordinating UAT, documentation and deployment. The updating the code part is easy.
I have 2 ideas for unnecessary skeuomorphic options for sending an email: 1) see your email as a sheet of paper that you then fold into a paper air plane and throw to send 2) (my favorite) create one of those suction tubes like that the bank drive through. Then you put your email under the tube and it goes "fuuump" up into the tube and sent into the ether!
I am concerned that we've lost Frank.
Java now at 1.5 seconds.
you should make a new version of Clippy where you can summon him like a genie and he'll bounce around and answer your questions! haha
Wow, so many new channels (with small subscriber counts) are popping up to review the Vision Pro. And lavish it with praise. Some people might get the wrong idea.
My 1TB AVP [w/Zeiss inserts] will be delivered to my house 02/02. Frank, I’d be delighted to help where I can with your app development. Please let me know. Thanks!
I am getting one as a designer so I’m definitely curious about what can and can’t be built but don’t have enough early adopter friends to talk to.
your channel name got my attention, but it also gives me anxiety, lol
Cool pod, I ordered the Vision Pro and can't wait! I was curious of your thoughts from the lens off app developers. Really looking forward to the opportunity to mult-task, mixing work and hobbies in addition to the entertainment features.
I don’t get why make an App for a headset that is selling less the 200,000 units when the Meta Quest has sold millions of units? It’s not hard to add a VR app to the Quest… I have an app in AppLab that has generated $40,000. And hasn’t even hit the main store front. Then once the Apple headset is mainstream in a couple years just port your app from Quest…
Great video. Could the focus on needing a “killer app” be misguided? Some people love to correct the smartphone record with comments like “Apple didn’t invent the smartphone!” “Technophiles” wax poetic about the existence of various gadgets with the same functionality as the iPhone. The iPhone was “nothing new” they say. All I can do is laugh when I hear comments like that. I can speak for the average consumer when I say “there was NOTHING like the iPhone” being offered by its competition when the iPhone launched. The Blackberry had “cutting edge” tech and security while the Razr offered styling and cool design. The iPhone UI was like nothing else out there, both magical and futuristic. I can’t remember exactly when I stopped wearing a watch, packing a calculator, mp3 player in my bag or thinking about T9 texting, but I did. I stumbled on this video. I am an average tech consumer who loves tech but I have never changed my own laptop battery or installed RAM. The Vision Pro is like the iPhone to me. The introduction of a complete OS with its own way of navigating using the eyes, pinching fingers and voice, being able to seamlessly choose how immersive you want to be, was both magical and futuristic . If Apple can just do what it presented to the world that alone will be enough. No killer app required.
I was planning to buy one. But, all the secrecy and caution from Apple gave me pause. I decided to wait until I can try it in the store.
Yes, best to try it in person first. I am in USA, and there are only 273 Apple Stores in the whole country. Many people will have to drive 200 miles to try the Vision Pro, and then just for 5 minutes. Because many other people are waiting to try too.
@@DerekDavis213 we have 2 about an hour away and I plan to wait until after the rush.
@@michaellatta You are lucky. America is a huge country, with 340 million people. Many people have to drive 2 hours to reach an Apple Store. If you decide to buy the Vision Pro, remember the true cost is closer to 4700. 3500 Vision Pro 500 Apple Care 200 extra battery 150 prescription lens 390 Sales Tax
@@DerekDavis213 more than that. I have batteries so no spare needed, but I would get 1TB and apple care and taxes, prescription lenses and possibly the case or one from Amazon. So $4500 - $5000. About what I have always spent on a computer. My real question is if using it can delay my getting a Mac or iPad for an additional 2 years. Or, if I end up wanting to do an app for it.
@@michaellatta It seems that a heavy headset, strapped to your head, with tiny lenses, and short battery life, is no substitute for a Mac or iPad? I'm a Windows and Android guy. I would never spend 4k to 5k for a computer. For 2000, I can build a very powerful Windows PC. Think about what makes up a PC or Mac today: processor, ram, ssd, screen, power supply. Those are all cheap commodities, made in China or Korea. No reason to spend big money on a computer, in 2024.
Good one
Thanks for pods this year.
Hi frank and james, I normally use Reflection when I do CQRS to register all the commands and queries to the DI or when I use Automapper to register them if I have multiple assemblies, ... Its really usefull. Also I´ve used in backend projects where ORM´s are not the best approach to get Data from databases and I use SqlCommand methods to map the result with the Object properties is really fast and light. Out of that I´ve never have to deal with the reflection.
