I am a recently retired service engineer and have collected vintage records in my spare time since about 1968. I enjoy a lot of musical genres, but originally concentrated on 1920's Jazz and dance band music - to the bemusement of my parents and some friends! As time has moved on, I have become a fan of popular vocal, operatic, classical and orchestral music, especially those recorded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - the golden age. I also have a strong interest in technology, history, discography and the oddities that have accompanied the development of recorded sound through the years. I hope my uploads prove to be of interest and enjoyment!
It Must Be Love (Harry Archer, Harlan Thompson) - Played by Sam Lanin's Dance Orchestra
It Must Be Love (Harry Archer, Harlan Thompson) - Played by Sam Lanin's Dance Orchestra
Vocal chorus by Arthur Fields
Recorded by The Plaza Music Company / Banner Records, New tork, 7 October, 1925
This Issue: Brown Wax Domino Record No.3606-B
Matrix: 6213-2
"It Must Be Love" was the first song to be featured in the New York musical production of "Merry Merry" that opened in New York's Vanderbilt Theatre in September, 1925. The show played for almost 200 performances.
Personnel:
Hymie Farberman, Red Nichols, t / Herb Winfield, tb / Clarence Heidke, Alfie Evans, cl, ss, as / George Slater, cl, ts / Eddie Sheasby, vn / Bill Krenz, p / Tony Colucci, bj, g / Joe Tarto, bb /Vic Berton, d
Existing between 1924 and 1933, Domino Records were one of many subsidiary labels of the Plaza Music Company.
Many of the Domino records were pressed in a rather unusual brown wax / shellac formulation and is described by the late great discographer, Brian Rust thus: "Recording quality is as good as Banner, of course, and the surfaces reasonably smooth, if not notably durable." (As you can hear, durability was not a strong suit!)
Recorded and processed from an original vintage 78 record by myself.

Oh! Martin!! I LOVE this! Thank you for sharing this truly wonderful and fun record!
Sweet! This was used as the opening theme for the first ever sound version of Alice in Wonderland, which was released a year later. Glad to see that there was an official recorded version all along!
Sounded like there was going to be Vocal. Great anyway
Wonderful. Regal clarity
Enjoyed. Thank you😊

thanks for posting this rare recording Martin, I enjoyed the Maurice Elwin vocals and Ray Staritas band...Elwin sounds a bit like Dan Donovan who is my favourite vocalist singing songs from the shows...greetings from a NZ collector

@@GramophonicReevolution The very best to you too Paul, thankyou. Look forward to your 2025 uploads!
1924. A very late acoustic recording. Astoria Orchestra? Was it an American import?Well made despite the technology.
A very early electrical?
@@jourwalis-8875 thank you for listening! The record was about one year into electrical recording for the Plaza / Banner group.

Nice 1926 recording and music!
Glad you like it!
Sounds like an acoustic recording from 1928!?
True! Harmony used the acoustic "truetone" process long after most everybody else went electric!
Fantastic recording from 1926!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Дэн Крылов?
I’m his grandson . Thank you for this. I have a 78 of him singing “who sings of England “ . Do you have any more of his songs?
I am very honoured by your highly valued comment and pay my respect to yourself and your legendary ancestor. Sadly, I have no other examples of his singing right now - but in the future, hopefully possible. I presume you may have already seen his film appearances? Thank you again for commenting
An award in memory of Isabel Jay was given yearly at the Royal Academy of Music. I don't know if it still is . One of the recipients was Ann Hood who went on to have a good career with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company herself as Principal Soprano. Later she retrained as a Mezzo Soprano and sang a great deal with Sadlers Wells/ English National Opera.
Thank you for this information and your comment. I understand the last "Isabel Jay Memorial Prize" was awarded as recently as last year to Lithuanian soprano Valerija Iljinaite, a recent graduate of the Royal Academy Of Music.

I am not so fond of these waltzes...
Don't mind the odd one myself!
Very good acoustic recording! 100 years old! First I thought it was an early electrical!
These Parlophones can be so pleasing both musically and technically! helps if they are in good condition of course!
Not bad sound quality from a 1925 record!
Thank you, but it could have been even better!
What do they mean by "Speed 80"?
The speed of 78.26 rpm was generally adopted as a the record speed standard around 1925. Until then it could be quite variable amongst manufacturers even though collectors and enthusiasts usually refer to them as 78's. Some Columbia records stated the speed as 80 until sometime later and this could depend on the country. Edison Diamond Discs until their withdrawal from the market in 1929 remained at 80 rpm.
What is "Mechsounds"?
"Mechsounds" is a friend, colleague and fellow TH-camr who specializes in mechanical music.
Fantastic sound quality from 1927!
Thankyou, yes, this is a particularly good example!
Świetna jakość.
Thankyou, glad you like it!
OH! I LOVE THIS! Thank You Martin! I could not be more honored to have you dedicate this BEAUTIFUL Record to me! I LOVE it! Australia has some of the most BEAUTIFUL label designs I have seen! Thanks so much once again!
Love the high spirited nature of this snappy 1926 foxtrot. Grand! From just listening to To Roybos 1926 tune, Thats Annabelle, id guess this was the same band! Both have a xylophone followed by a bass sax slap tonguing it, almost identical ! Your tune has more solo work from the sax, but could possibly be the same guys?!! I would guess the recording sessions where very close too. Thanks for letting us hear this great 78!
Unlike many, i am a big fan of that slap tongue sax effect, corny as it might be!
Impressive talent from 1930. Thanks for posting this smooth foxtrot from down under! Great.
So glad you like it, thankyou!
Great twenties tune! I like your label. Starr was a USA piano company that also made victrolas. Edison made a great record of this too. Thanks for sharing!
The Starr piano company is legendary! Maybe we tried to steal a bit of that glory
Another great twenties foxtrot! Attractive label. Thanks for sharing!
Magnificent!
