    Good fundamentals for how most young goaltenders learn. When I watch high level goalies, NHL, etc, they get extremely wide and low and still move phenomenally. Watch any NHL shootout and see how wide and low goalies get. They seem to go in and out of the bitterly with ease. The benefit of getting low is that you can drop onto a butterfly with your glove & blocker remaining at the same heights, you don’t have to adjust your eyes for that dropping motion as you are tracking the puck.

      This is a tricky one and requires a lot of patience. If you have good body control, you can usually catch an edge and power leg back in the correct direction. If you lose control, you always have your stick to poke check the player as the pull the puck back the other way.

    • @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment
      @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure your gap control is good. If you back off too soon, you will create a lot of room for the shooter. If the gap between you and the puck is within a stick and a half length, it will require a really good shot to beat you. Don’t get frustrated, keep working!

    I've adopted Kappo Kahkonens stance and man I catch everything. The glove positioning takes a little getting used to but it gives the illusion that under the glove is free but anything low glove is an automatic half butterfly leg save or it'll hit the cuff of the glove. I find my movement to be less powerful with the wider stance but I only do that if the puck is between the hashes, outside of that I narrow up to cover what I need to down low and allow for stronger pushes. I really believe all stances should be dynamic based on puck positioning.

  • @bencurry35
    @bencurry35 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are some nice pointers on here but it doesn’t live up to the title. This video doesn’t teach you anything about how to do any of the techniques listed. Lead with the toe - what does that mean? How about explaining the mechanics of how to push while gently putting the sliding pad down? Beginning goalies frequently flop down as they try to move from side to side in the slide as they haven’t been taught the technique of how to get the lead leg down. And what about explaining how to learn the balance technique that is needed in order to do a slide while already down? Or more about what edge work is needed in order to keep you on a post while in the VH? Sadly this video doesn’t do any of these and doesn’t really help the goalie at all.

    • @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment
      @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben, thank you very much for the feedback. We gladly accept any and all constructive criticism, and agree with the need for there to be content that is much more technical in nature. We approached this series as more of an introduction to some of these techniques, with the goal of keeping videos extremely short and concise. I am sorry if you felt that the title was misleading. We do have plans to get much more technical in future content, and your suggestions really help identify those areas of struggle for most goalies when using these techniques. We hope you become part of the community because these conversations are the ones we need to have regularly to ensure we are bringing goalies what they want and need.

      @@TotalGoaltendingDevelopment Appreciate the response and I look forward to seeing more videos that are highly specific. I’d love to send beginner goalies to your YT channel so they can see more about the mechanics needed to be successful. Breaking down every part of a power slide, butterfly recovery, hand / head positioning, etc., would be amazing. There are plenty of videos out there that cater to the person who has some experience and how to get better, I hope y’all can cover the absolute beginner. And if you can get a mic, that would help the audio quality tremendously but totally understand if you don’t want to do that.

    I'm an old guy in his early 60's. I grew up as a stand up goalie in the 1960's and 70's, I modernized my game to the half butterfly and the paddle down as a beer leaguer in the 1990's. Lately I've been trying to learn more about today's goaltending, not to play, but for when I'm watching Leafs games. I have found your short concise videos like this one, and your other videos, super helpful at bringing me up to speed. When guys like Jack Campbell are having a good, or a bad, game I'd like to be able to pick up on what is happening, like I could 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago. Man I'm old. Lol

    Good video... Great instruction ... But I see more terrible goals because of the rvh. Goalies on their knees way too much when there is no advantage... The strategy is good but goalies have to be taught when to use it. In the world Jr. tournament there were no fewer than five goals scored because of the rvh.

      Totally agree Steve, situational awareness is key and understanding when to use one method versus another can make a huge difference. It is just another tool in our arsenal, but goalies need to know how to use it to be effective. Thank you for sharing your feedback.

    - agree with the echo - perhaps put mike in different position - Most important question BF slide , crawl - can't seem to get the actual position of the push leg in order to eliminate the off balance semi circular or circular turn that is not supposed to happen. I've tried toe, first 1/2 blade & back of blade & still can't get that power behind the push leg I think you can help me with this - BTW useful short & concise coaching - that is really appreciated for this older new goalie

    • @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment
      @TotalGoaltendingDevelopment 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim, firstly, thank you for the suggestion. We are looking to improve the quality of the audio in the future, but are new to the content game so please be patient with us. Secondly, hopefully this feedback can help your issue with over rotation on your butterfly slides. The ability to get the leg into a position for full extension does require some mobility and flexibility in the hips. You said you are new to the position, so take some time working on the mobility side of things. There are a number of great off-ice drills that you can reference on YT , I like Maria's video called "GOALIES - Do THIS Everyday To Unlock Your Hips." We also have an off-ice program with a number of drills, if you'd like more info you can shoot us an email. I'd also like you to focus on what part of your blade you push from. Normally, pressure on the first third is ok, but if your balance is off at all, or your blade angle is off, you will over rotate. When I see this issue on the ice with our goalies, I tell them to feel like they are pushing from the heel of their blade instead of the toe. That forces your weight back, and tends to help with the rotation. The hope is that by feeling like your push is coming from the heel, it ends up forcing the entirety of your blade on the ice, rather than just the toe. It should also help you get a stronger more consistent push. Hope this helps, and welcome to the goaltending position!

      That really depends on the scenario. If you are trying to cut back or push forward, the foot will be ahead or behind respectively. For practicing the heel push, start with it at neutral and level to the knee.
