Help! And i4x5 Derwentwater Image Review
In this video I discuss a digital camera scanning issue I encountered with the 4x5 images I took in the last video at Derwentwater in the beautiful English Lake District.
As I say in the video, if you have any ideas on why I was getting the issue or how to address it, please let me know in the comments.
The camera I'm using is an Intrepid 4x5 Camera (intrepidcamera.co.uk).
Hope you enjoy and if you have any other questions or comments please pop them below and I'll do my best to answer them.

As part of our October 2016 holiday to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon in the USA, we twice visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. If you are using Lightroom, try the plugin Negative Lab Pro. It does a fantastic job of getting the colors correct! I think they have a trial version so you can try it out before you buy.
Hi Don, thanks for the tip. I should have been more precise on the video because one of the images on the video was processed using negative lab pro. The reason I started to think that perhaps it might have been an exposure/film/developing/“scanning” issue was because this also resulted in what I thought were poor results. Out of interest though, how are you finding using negative lab pro?
Chris Blake I had great results using it the few times I have. I’ve not done much “serious” color photography since picking it up last summer, but the scans I’ve done have had great colors! I used to use a V850 scanner from Epson, but it developed some internal reflections and I never could get good colors out of it - I always had a color cast (often magenta).
hi Don, thanks, that's interesting. I see if I had a refection issue as well.
Hi Chris, check out this fellow's Instagram. He does a lot of color negative and has gotten very good at correcting the colors. I don't know exactly what he does, or what he uses, but I bet it will be useful for you to go through Tim's posts and see what he says about his images. instagram.com/dv_over_dt/ He is also quite a nice guy and would probably be fine to get in touch with. Chris Wray
Hi Chris, thanks, I’ll take a look!
I believe I had the same thing happen last week. Apparently I didn't get the film in the guides properly and after I took the photo I inserted the dark slide pulled out the film holder only to see my piece of film on the outside of the holder!!
You could well be right. Trying to get them inserted in the dark is a skill that I'm sure becomes second nature with plenty of practise, but for the likes of me, being able to check I've done it right would really help, which of course you can't do in the light. The mental picture I had from your story made me smile and I'm sure it's exactly the sort of thing that will happen to me at some point :-)
I'm glade things worked out this time.
thanks, but as you'll see in my next video, they didn't work out quite as well as I had hoped! :-)
Even if the plan wasn't successful, the video is excellent :) and very interesting.
Thanks Fausto, that's very kind of you to say so and I'm glad you enjoyed it
This is a handy video. I am just staring my own 4 x 5 journey. This seems an area where I might be able to save a couple of squid. Any chance you could tell me what material your partner used to make this?
Hi Steve, sorry for the delay in replying. I spoke to Kim and she can't remember what she used, but it came from Fabric Land (in the UK). She just chose the thinest black material she could find that she couldn't see through.
No worries, Chris. My wife has come up with a design and the material is on order. The commercial ones seem a liitle ... 'over-priced'.
Thanks and good to hear you have one in progress. I thought the same about the commercial ones and jumped at the chance when Kim said that she could easily make one. The one thing I haven't quite sorted yet is the seal to the camera. Mine lets in a bit of light so I'd be interested to hear how you find this and address it if you do.
Chris, judging by the size it's overkill for such a lightweight camera. I just ordered for mine Slik Lite AL-420, much much lighter and adequate.
True enough. The legs aren't too bad, but certainly not lightweight. The head is very heavy. Also, I don't find a ball head ideal for the shape of the camera. On the plus side, I do find having a heavy tripod set-up helps with overall stability, but it is probably as you say, more than is required. Also, the tripod and head were bought many years before the camera and is also used with much heavy digital cameras, so more an inherited accessory rather than one bought specifically for the camera!
Is the wood sanded well and sealed with any finish?
hi Curtis. The wood is very well sanded and smooth, but I'm not sure if it has been sealed or not. If I run my fingers over the flat surfaces I can feel a very slight grain, although easy to miss in typical usage. The edges (where you can see the ply) are much smoother than the flat surfaces and have nicely rounded corners. Hope this helps, regards Chris.
So glad I came across this, Love the idea and style. Going to make my own as well!
so where is the result? Nice series.. continue sharing your experience in LF
hi Abdul. Thanks for the encouragement. In all openness, a personal situation developed this year that has meant I ended up dropping most things to focus on that. Photography was one of the things that fell by the wayside. But, I'm through that now so hopefully 2019 will start to see more photography and TH-cam videos!
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I'm trying to gather materials now to make my own as well because of the outrageous prices for new dark cloths. Cheers
How much time did it take you to explore those viewpoints? Thanks
We spent an afternoon, but you could easily easily spend the whole day I would imagine especially if you continue the drive further along the road to the later viewpoints.
Very useful videos, Can you share the Dimensions (W x H x D) in order to make one similar!! Thanks in advance!!
hi Leonel. Sorry it's taken so long to reply to you. The length of the cloth (i.e. length being distance from end that goes over my head to the end that goes over the camera) is 83cm or about 32.5 inches. The side that's folded over to create the tube is 94cm (37 inches) when unfolded. Kim used an open ended zip to create the tube, that is, the type of zip you'd use on a jacket, not a pair of trousers etc. It has quite large zip teeth just to make it easy to use. At the tube ends, Kim did an open ended hem so that we could push the paracord through. The free ends of the paracord are connected using sliding cord fasteners. I used these specifically: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06WP3JR9P/. regards chris.
In England we say 5x4
hi Neil, yes, agreed, 5x4 is the convention in the UK (and other countries). I gave this a bit of thought before starting this series and decided to go with 4x5 instead of 5x4 for two reasons. Firstly, Intrepid call their camera a 4x5 and the series name is a bit of light humoured play on their name so I needed to stick with 4x5 to make this work. Secondly, I thought (but could be wrong) that worldwide, 4x5 is more common than 5x4. So given the international audience on TH-cam I've stuck with 4x5 for the videos as well as the name. I might mention all this in a later video.
f8 is a bit dark. I would have gone for a 6.8 Schnieder Super Angulon. Try to get a bright ground glass screen and use a lupe to check focus. The Copal shutters are more reliable than the Compurs which are usually with the Schneider lenses.
Thanks for the video. Bought the exact same holders and ran into the same " problems " Trained it with the lights on, looking at what I'm doing, than being comfy with that, practiced with closed eyes and lights on ( so I can take a glimpse if needed). Than took the plunge, turned the lights off, holding my breath and , hey, it worked. It just takes practice. Never loaded a 4x5 holder before.
Hello, I think you forgot to mention an essential piece of gear namely, an external light meter ! All the best.
:-) Yes, how could I forget that? Ok, I can see another video coming up...
I do like a ballhead for my 35mm and MF cameras but not for my Intrepid. The head I've got will very comfortably hold the weight of my camera/lens/film holder but making any fine adjustments is just such a major pain. Going top be getting a small-ish geared head just for the intrepid.
your 90 is equivalent to about a 28mm
Hi Chris what do you think about intrepid camera ? do you like it? I am a photographer from Argentina. Best regards
hi Gerardo, overall I've been pleased with the camera to date. I like the fact it is simple and very lightweight. In the past, and sometimes still, I carry ridiculous amounts of weight around with me while chasing some scene for my digital work. But I've learnt over time that unless you are working at the margins where lots of specialist gear is a must, much of getting the best from a scene comes down to the skill of the photographer, not the gear itself. This is one of the reasons I've partially gone back to film and a camera like this - it helps strips me back to the basics, keeps it simple, and compared to many LF cameras I have seen, keeps the weight very manageable. Having said that, I don't think this is the camera for everybody that is thinking of LF photography. I think the key thing for some will be that the movements on the camera are limited and not precise; If you want fine, easily repeatable, control over tilt and shift then this won't be the camera for you. There are other minor things too such as the focus screen is not high quality ground glass; I have seen comments about how durable / well protected the camera is when folded; and I can easily see myself losing the screw that fixes the front standard to the base. The issues above are very minor to me though and don't detract from what I think is a great (and relatively inexpensive) little camera. By the way, I thought Intrepid's customer service was great too. They accepted a return (purely because we'd order the wrong colour) without question and very quickly supplied a replacement. Out of interest, are you thinking of buying one?
Thank for your answer. Yes I am thinking to buy one to replace a Linhof technica i have because its very very hard to transport
In that case I think you'll notice the weight saving. The intrepid is all wood (precision cut), with basic controls, so I imagine it will be a very different experience to the Linhof ("imagine" because I haven't used a linhof before). But hopefully you'll enjoy it as much if you end up getting one!
Great review, keep up the great work!
You're going to love large format. I started shooing 8x10 about eight months ago. I have dedicated my channel to large format as well. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Thanks!
Thank you and I hope I do!
Hollywood came to Grafton in the Fall of 1968 and used the town as the home of Etta Place, School Teacher in the Movie Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. The highlight in the movie was the song Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head bicycle scene.
