In this video, I’m sharing my personal experience of navigating through the highs and lows of the corporate world, starting from my first job at Deutsche Bank to the intense work culture of a Big 4 firm like KPMG. 📈 From landing a dream job as a fresh graduate to realizing the harsh realities of corporate life, I’ve seen it all.
💼 Corporate Pressure & Mental Health: Recently, an executive at EY took his own life due to extreme work stress, and while this news shocked many, if you’ve ever worked in a Big 4 company, you’d know the pressures can be overwhelming. I experienced this firsthand during my time at KPMG. With my 7+ years of corporate experience across 10 companies, I can say that working in the corporate sector is not just about earning a hefty paycheck, it’s about surviving the demanding work culture and navigating complex interpersonal dynamics. 🏢
🚀 The Dream vs. Reality: Fresh out of BCom, my journey began with a humble start at Deutsche Bank, earning ₹25k a month. From there, I moved to FIS, doubling my salary, and then cracked the CAT to join IIM Lucknow, dreaming of bigger roles and packages. But little did I know, the real challenge was yet to come - long working hours, unhealthy work-life balance, and a toxic environment.
🔥 Surviving the Big 4 Culture: Joining KPMG felt like an ultimate achievement, but it soon turned into the toughest phase of my career. The pressure to work 10-14 hours a day, the expectation to socialize beyond working hours, and dealing with an unsupportive manager took a serious toll on my mental and physical health. 💀 I even noticed how many high-performing colleagues were struggling with obesity and stress, which was a major wake-up call for me.
💡 Lessons Learned: Through these experiences, I learned two important lessons:
📌 People-friendly culture matters more than big brands and salaries:
Having a supportive manager can make a huge difference in your work experience. Your manager’s approach defines your experience more than the company’s culture itself. Even a company with the best policies can feel toxic if your immediate manager doesn’t align with them.
🧠 Making the Tough Decision: After 6 years of non-stop work, I realized I needed to prioritize my health and happiness. I decided to leave KPMG and the corporate hustle to follow my true passion-teaching! This led to the birth of my own venture, FinStreet Education, where I’m finally doing what I love, helping others build their careers. 🎓
👨‍🏫 Why This Video?: I want to give you a reality check on the pros and cons of the corporate world. If you’re preparing for a career in the corporate sector or are already in it, I hope my story helps you be better prepared for the challenges ahead. Remember, a successful career is not just about the money-it’s about finding a healthy balance between work and life, and doing what truly makes you happy. 💪

I am so damn lucky that with a salary increase, my workload has reduced drastically. Currently I am making 30LPA base. And I fucking love the company I am currently working for. My manager is lovely, she scold us if we don't take all of our paid leave. She is very vigilant in checking who is online after hours and let us know how important it is to spend time with family. Oh damn, we get summer weekends. i.e. only 4 working days every week in the month of July. We get mental-health days. That's like 4 random days off in a year. Above all, we get unlimited sick leave. But middle class admi kya kare. Me abhi bhi switch ka dekh raha. But I am trying to find a job out of india.

In Mumbai, especially after the year 2000, it started becoming a rogue capitalistic sort of city--- the economy, the society, the culture and everything. Social welfare, compassion and all such things were very rarely seen and felt. A corporate slavery sort of thing.

In my opinion, the major isuue is because there are no strict laws in India. My personal experience is I worked for an organization for 4 years in a row with 15 hours on weekends. Not a single leave for the past one year. And now suddenly my company fired my whole Data Science team citing Financial issues. The company now is not even open to discussion on the Full and Final Settlement because they know even if they don't pay, the employees cannot do anything through the legal process. They have not dispatched the salaries June onwards and fired the team in August mid. They said FnF will be done within 45 days and as of today the company has not even disclosed the FnF amount. This seems really stressful and frustrating because laws are not strict. I did not expect such a shameless behavior in the corporate world.

I worked in a aerospace company called transdigm in bangalore. I literally went 3 months regular (no weekends) because of project critical conditions. At one point we had like 5 managers to manage the project where we had 45 mins of stand up daily and next day called out for not completing on time. Even they told 1 week or 4-5 days holidays will be provided but they immediately retracted from the words and bonus amount were also unfairly distributed among peers. Refer ambition box for more. Currently they are not sitting with any projects in software side.

Not just Big 4, this is same in every IT company. Rather than micromanaging people, they should adjust the deadlines by keeping in mind that there are other aspects of life apart from work and people need time for that too. People make a company not vice-versa. It will be only solved top-down , from the top leaders by taking People-first approach. Unfortunately, that is not happening and its chances in the future are also bleak.
