Really enjoyed this video, thank you for bringing awareness to this wonderful craft.
Fascinating documentary even if the title is one of the scariest of all scriptures.
I've been pinstriping for 20 years, and last year I started getting more into lettering and sign painting.. there's no sign painters around me to learn from.
What area are you in? Have you looked into online courses?
"It Should Happen to You" is a 1954 American romantic comedy film starring Judy Holliday, Peter Lawford and Jack Lemmon; About a woman who rents a Billboard to write her name and becomes a household name! Very funny classic
Why are there wearing hair nets on the roof?
haha! we had to go through a candy factory to get onto the roof. We weren't allowed to really show the factory so it's a funny scene. Great catch!
I have been teaching myself aspects of the sign industry, lots of mistakes along the way but no old masters around any more to mentor me, but I love it being able to create.
It's a tough art and the masters (like Rick) are pretty humble. We got lucky to catch him and have him in the doc.
Being a long time Walldog, I had not seen this effect being used before. This struck me so hard that I had to call my wife in to replay it for her! I Love the way the animated bottle fills, and the rotation of the can of ham. So very clever!!
Amazing! That's what we love about it too! It's a way to honour the past without impacting it. There are currently 2 permanent installations in Winnipeg that Craig and Matt have installed in the last year! More to come!
I am self learning at 54 but i am a master house painter over 35 years love the craft ,doing my first public bar sign now ,
Amazing! How did it go?
@@handcraftcreative1 Great they locals loved it ,its up on display on the old tin shed bar at our local historical still operating steam engine train station with engine turn pike we call the village green brining in 1000s of tourist every week on the old steam loco
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You for watching!
I did a bit of signwriting during my 17 years as a coal man, mostly lettering the lorries and the odd shop front, but I made things hard, basically having to draw the lettering with a Chinagraph pencil, and doing basic fonts, but I was never happy with my work, because I knew I lacked the BIG, thing that makes the difference of being a good signwriter and what I was capable of and that is an artistic eye, because of the lettering and advertising done by signwriters are works of art, especially some of glass etching and gold leaf work, real works of art, also I'm scared of heights haha, keep up the good work guys.
haha! Wonderful story about how hard it is is to execute this work! Thanks for sharing!
Hello Travelling Sign Painters, great works and great attitudes. Might I suggest if you wish to work sideways, check out the custom car people, auto restoration$, big truck$, etc. Please look at "Monkey sign 123" on TH-cam. This woman is located in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State and is much fun to watch and listen to, she shares. I left Winnipeg in 1967 been in BC ever since. I have a volunteer job at a local military museum in Victoria and reproduce the insignia on our military vehicles. After research, graphics are correctly applied in one shot enamels. Previously this was done in vinyl, no comparison, real paint adds realism. Did we have vinyl plotters during WW2 ? Starting to rant...........cheers.
Wow! Thanks for the informations! We'll pass it on!
I started signwriting in 1976. "Oh,that's a dying trade" people said. I'm 63 now, still painting, they're still saying it! People love seeing it done though.
Haha! That's great! Happy to hear you didn't give up!
@@handcraftcreative1Wonderful of you guys to bring peoples' attention to this great old work. Thanks
I’m 23 and want to start sign painting, no idea where to even begin! But I’m excited for what’s ahead
Super cool!
Thanks for watching!
more artists need to get into star tone picking!
seriously! :)
LOVE hearing that hand painting is picking up favor!
It truly deserves it!
Was just kind of letting TH-cam be on autoplay after researching mural painting and came across this video! It was fascinating and creative and I learned so much! Thank you.
ah! that's so awesome! I love it when people stumble upon our work. Thank you so much for watching and for the kind comments! :)
This is amazing I love the story and seeing the history!!! Showcasing how marketing and promoting has started and grown and comeback to the handmade lettering advertising is really amazing!!!
Thanks for giving it watch! There's nothing quite like something hand made. It's organic and special. :)
I am painting a mural. I came into this after searching hand lettering. I am glad I watched this. I will get to appreciate trying to pull off the mural.
Amazing! I hope it turns out well! It's amazing how much watching someone else do it can teach you. Good luck!
Thank you. That was great.
Thank YOU for watching!
First time seeing this. It was cool to be a part of. Cheers.
Awesome! So happy you enjoyed it!
Such a great documentary!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for giving it a watch!
Awesome storytelling! Wonderful sense of pride for Winnipeg’s heritage. I remember a huge lumberjack one as a little girl.
Thank you! We love our city and seeing comments like this with a note about your favourite sign is heartwarming! :)
So well done! Kudos to the production team and the talented artists who participated in this fascinating project! Used to work frequently in the exchange district and would not only admire the architecture but the ghost signs in abundance. All you had to do was take a moment to look up and recognize the skill and history of these advertisements. Thanks so much for posting!
Thanks for giving it a watch! We couldn't agree more!
Is Matt's website back up? If so, can you please share the URL? Thanks!
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like his site is up. But here's the link www.paintedinlight.ca/
I just found your video. As a former (and homesick) Winnipeger, I really enjoyed seeing what the you did with the Exchange and regret that I missed it. Is there any plan do to something similar in the future (post-COVID of course)? If so, please advertise it way in advance so that I can time one of my trips home to see it. Well done and well done on keeping the sign making tradition alive!
The hope is that it will happen again! Craig is interested in coming back and there are obviously many more walls that could be done. We'll make sure to advertise it. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed this so much!We were neighbours of the painter who did some of these signs,Jean Sign Co.
That's awesome! Jean Sign Co. definitely came up in our discussions! We're glad you enjoyed our film.
I always loved the advertising in the exchange. The film industry would benefit from some of these signs being restored and the retro look would enhance the downtown experience. Very cool to see projections, but would love to see that taken a step further.
It's a tough go for sure. Ghost signs inherently require the aging process and that's how you get the interesting layers of peeling. So many of them are painted one over another so picking the right ones to restore would be challenging. It would be awesome if more signs were painted on blank walls in the traditional form to allow them to become their own 'ghost signs'! Wouldn't that be something! Or require new businesses to have painted signs (or create an incentive for them to do so). One can dream!
Very cool
Thanks for watching!
