Snowball Fights in Dead by Daylight: Why the Bone Chill Event is So Fun (even for a bad killer)
I have been enjoying Dead by Daylight's Bone Chill event so much that I had to talk about it!
Official info about the event here:
deadbydaylight.com/news/bone-chill-2024-everything-to-know/
In my enthusiasm, I got a couple of terms wrong:
- It's a WINTER event, not a Christmas event.
- They're SnowSKULLS, not Snowballs (although let's be real here)
It's honestly been some of the most wholesome gameplay I've experienced, a surprise in a game called "Dead by Daylight"

Just recently got into Dead by Daylight. The premise is simple: 4 survivors try to accomplish QTE tasks while a single killer hunts them down. In reality, there's a LOT to learn. Here's a quick video about my experiences as a beginner to give anyone else considering trying the game a perspective on what it's like to start out. Late to the party here, but welcome to the game! You have a great attitude, and it's nice to see that DBD is still bringing in new players after all the time it's been out. I started during Covid in 2020, and I've got a little over 4000 hours in the game now, but I still feel like I'm learning new things all of the time. There's plenty in the game to have fun with, if you put the time into it. If I had any advice it would be the following: 1) Play both sides (which it looks like you're doing). I started playing only survivor, but eventually switched to doing both. Playing one side of the game helps tremendously in learning how to play the other side well. I have friends I play in a SWF with who almost never touch killer, and I'm often the one who needs to explain to them why something is happening with the killer we're facing (since I know the perks and add-ons, and they often don't). Not only is playing both sides important to learning how things work from a mechanical standpoint, it also helps to understand WHY players do what they do in-game. Getting into the head of the each role will be helpful, not just in playing better, but in not stressing when things don't go to plan. 2) Always try to have fun (which it also looks like you have down already). I'm VERY competitive, and I hate to lose ... but, after a certain amount of time, as much as I want to win any given match, in the end I want to have fun more than anything else. I play The Pig on the killer side, and some of my favorite moments in the game have been meme matches where everyone wants to "Boop the Snoot", and I end up farming with survivors (usually during an Event). Goofy interactions like those, occasionally giving mercy to survivors at the end of a match that went really badly for them, getting a killer as survivor who's goofing off as well -- these are the things that take the edge off of the other matches that end up highly competitive. I try to remember, even in the more stressful moments, that it's all for fun, and any aggravation I might end up having, I try to let go of by the time I hit "ready up" for the next match. 3) Don't get discouraged by the grind (which is pretty bad, but is far better than it was when I started). Use the events (like the BP bonus going on now) to farm as much BP as you can. Try to get as many survivors and/or killers to Prestige 3 as you can to unlock their perks on everyone to make running different builds easier. If you play killer, find one you enjoy and practice as much as you can with them to learn their secrets and tricks. 4) The community is better than its reputation. As "toxic" as some people who play the game can be, we remember the bad interactions far more than we remember the good ones. I've met a number of people in-game who've turned out to be incredibly nice people, and they far outnumber the ones who weren't so nice. Always try to have a positive attitude with the game (which it looks like you definitely have already), and that will go a long way to keeping your experiences good ones. 5) There is a wealth of info out there from content creators to draw from. You mentioned Otzdarva -- he's the best source of info out there, and he's done lists explaining perks, items, add-ons, killer powers, strategies, etc., and if you watched nothing else, his content along those lines are an invaluable source for learning the game. There are plenty more people out there as well, some of whom have been mentioned already in your comments -- like I said, I've got 4000+ hours, and I'm still learning new things all of the time. Again, welcome to the DBD community, and good luck in your time in the game!
Thanks for the tips! Concerning your 2nd point: I feel I'm not super competitive, which might actually be helpful in this game. I consider it a personal "win" if I feel like the other people I'm playing with are having fun. :)
@caitsithplays I agree completely! The game's matchmaking system (MMR), in theory, will put you against more competitive players the more competitive you play (and in turn, the more you win, you face opponents who have a win-at-all-costs approach). This can lead to matches that can get very frustrating playing on either side, when it feels like every match is being played with someone's actual life on the line, lol. That can, and has, led to people who get burnt out on playing. It sounds like you have the perfect mindset to avoid that. If you're having fun first and foremost, and you try to have fun with your opponents, then your matches will hopefully always be enjoyable, and the game will stay fresh for you for a long time to come! 🙂
this girl just come with al positivity in the world <3
@YoshizawaABC1180 haha thank you! I assure you, I'm not that way all of the time, but this game brings it out of me somehow lol
I thought you would of come to the conclusion that Edie is the murderer to every Finch. Kinda sus she kept the comic of a murder of a family member that shows a layout of the house. How would the creator would of known the layout unless it had to be a family member who wrote it or it could be that the editor had been to the house before or the media took pictures since she was a child actress. Also I noticed that one of the Finches was living underground the whole time. you would of thought if someone broke in and he heard a family member scream that he would of help out. But of course he stated he locked himself in and he also thought there was a monster waiting for him (that monster could be Edie all along). However Edie did leave gifts for him which you never seen any gifts near the door. So that would of mean that Edith had access to the vault or underground however you want to put it. Plus you could of think how can he breathe under there since there's no air or the smell of no toilet around? It all makes sense. Edie isn't who everyone is. This game did reminds me of the movie "Big Fish". Where in that film it tells the story of an older man to his daughter in law about the things he did when he was young. Of course, his son doesn't believes it cause a lot of things he claims sounds like tall tales. It could be an inspiration from it.
@@Solidier1 Two things of note: There are other things (I believe some writing/notes from Edie) that suggest she did help contribute to Barbara's comic. I theorize it's her way of giving Barbara a happy ending: the fame she (or Edie thought she) wanted. Secondly, Walter - who lived under the house - was the little brother in Barbara's story. It's suggested that the trauma of that day is what sent him underground.
@@caitsithplays Yes Ma'am. I finally started to play the game after having it in my library for many years and it's pretty good. It's really sad that many of them died at a younger age that you would of thought that the house was curse and that they should of moved away. Also the thought of them keep adding more to the house kinda got me wondering. I know that rooms in there once belong to certain people. However you can tell by the way they couldnt let things go. You're adding more people in the house. at least put all that stuff in the attic or a storage building since they keep building more rooms on the house. I know it must been hard for Edith Mom to live in a room that still had her brothers stuff in there. I couldn't believe how much trauma she gets after loosing her brothers and Dad. She made the right choice on leaving. The house is full of paranormal. Who turn on the bath tub you could debate it could been the missing kid or edie or the little one imagination? If it was up to me if any kid that passed away from there let alone a few of them, I would of moved out long ago. However I can understand it's a family home. Thanks for your view on the whole game. Heck someone pointed out you could see Sam ghost near the telescope. Which I didn't noticed it.
When I tried playing survivor, I got a nurse using the Human Greed perk to use the event chest spawns for aura reading and was using a full aura reading build. Super sweaty. Then a plague with a devouer hope hex build. Sweaty, too. Then, an anti heal build doctor. Even more sweat. So, I've decided to play the event as killer instead. I use trapper with the padded jaw add-on so his traps do no damage. And I do snowball fights and other shenanigans. It's much better when it's up to you to make the match chill and fun.
@@raywilson641 I agree. The killer I feel can really make or break it.
Try playing killer then report back with the same energy😂😂
@@joshuabeaven8572 Hi! I didn't record much of it, but I did play some killer at the time of recording this video. I killed no one, but chased plenty. It was fun!
Terminology can definitely be a big hurdle to overcome, it will come over time, but at the start it would most certainly be overwhelming. As far as sweaty killers go that try to win at all cost, for now you will be fine, but once you hit high mmr, where both survivors and killers are so experienced that if they being the best killer/survivors perks and items/addons, the other side simply cannot win. Therefore, in a very awful and unfun way, high mmr is balanced by everyone, every round, bringing the most broken shit they can that's in the game, evening itself out in a disgusting way. Sweaty killers isn't something that's exclusive to new players, in fact it's the most optimal strategy to tunnel out the weakest link of the group. I tend to try and not tunnel when I don't have to, as it is very unfun to the opposing side, but be aware should you ever play enough to reach high mmr, expect a lot of killers to be sweaty with up to 4 gen slowdown/regression/blocking perks, protecting a 3 gen (choosing 3 near each other generators and patrolling them to make it hard for the survivor to finish the last gen) and tunnel 1 out as a 3v1 is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to win than a 4v1. Reason for this is if someone is on the hook, and the killer chases another, the third person now needs to save, but since there is no longer a 4th person, nobody is doing any gen progress, eventually but surely leading to a loss. Same thing the other way with survivors, the meta is 3 to 4 second chance perks, making it often so in order to get a down, you need to hit the survivor up to 8 times per survivor, and no I'm unfortunately not exaggerating that. There is the 2 health states, then endurance via perks like dead hard and or off the record, after getting the down through that they could have decisive strike, leading to another chase reset, into an insta heal (syringe + the bottle, forgot the name but the addon for a medkit that gives you endurance). With the most recent character you can even make sure now that someone on death hook is no longer death hook which gets rid of a ton of pressure, often loosing the game thanks to this if you aren't playing the best killers in the game. Of these you can use a lot of these second chance perks multiple times each time you get hooked, some even every chase. And let's not even get into map offerings, these can be VERY survivor or killer sided maps where you basically have to try to loose in order to not escape with 4 people/kill 4 people because of how unbalanced the maps are in favor of one side. This is something you likely won't have to worry about for a while, however these things are part of the game, and as you hit high mmr, you start to see these things on both killer and survivor, pretty much every single match, and if you aren't typing to be sweaty and use every single little thing to your advantage, you are practically begging to loose. It is noteworthy that not all of the matches are like that, particularly public lobbies (non survive with friends lobbies) tend to be a lot more chill and fair, but that's a side that will slowly but surely unravel itself over time as getting rare items/addons is a 100% guarantee every bloodweb once you hit prestige 100 on a character. So using iridescent addons isn't particularly hard to do. The learning curve can be very extensive, unfortunately the game itself does a very bad job at teaching it's own mechanics to the players. Even with the tutorials added, they heavily misrepresent how you are actually supposed to use the resources, like for example the tutorial teaches you that lockers are good to hide in, they aren't, the muffle your voice, not necessarily making it more quiet, simply just muffled, making it very easy for an experienced killer to know you are hiding in a locker. Same thing with pallets, the game tells you to just instantly drop of 20 meters from the killer, which can work and is the best way to deal with specific killers, but for the majority of killers you fiest want to loop the pallet a few times before dropping it. Point is, unfortunately to get better and learn more about the game, you are practically forced to look elsewhere on third party websites. It's something I wish they would improve on in game, perhaps with a tutorial book explaining stuff in a short paragraph, accompanied with a short video as a visual explanation or something along those lines. The toxicity just like with how sweaty the game gets, is something you will mostly only see at the higher levels of dbd players, those that have played the game for thousands of hours at high mmr. It's honestly a surprise when I don't see a death threat at least once a day directed at someone, despite that being a bannable offense. It's definitely better than it used to be, however as it stands dbd is still the most toxic community I have ever seen in gaming period. I hope with it having gotten better that you will not have the displeasure of experiencing that, however I know that so long someone keeps playing dbd and gets better and better, it's only a matter of time when toxicity becomes the norm, and not even being nice, just not being toxic, becomes a pleasant surprise. "I think it's more fun to play than it is to win" this is very true, the community for a long time was very competitive and took the game way too seriously, and this mind set you have is something you should try to keep. With that mindset even the frustrating games that are impossible to win no matter how well you play cause the survivors/killer just overpowered you by sheer advantages stacked upon advantages, become just fine. It's something I had to learn over time to not take the game as seriously and be fine with loosing, as the game simply is balanced in a way that winning simply isn't possible every game. I don't think it should be like this, that, oh, killer/survivor brought these addons/items, or oh, they brought this map, I guess I will loose before the match even started, but the game is like this, so recognizing that and being fine with just simply having fun instead of trying to win, is a overall MUCH healthier mindset to have and leave you with a lot less personal toxicity and frustrating in and over the game. As far as things to try, personally I am a fan of themes, like for example as survivor the invisible build with iron will , distortion lucky break and clam spirit as an example or gimmick builds to try and go for a specific play and instead of playstyle, like putting everything of your build into trying to get to use x bad perk to guarantee value from it, like power struggle for example using flip flop and dying state recovery speed perks to get enough wiggle % to instantly drop a pallet yourself when the killer picks you up. As killer I like to play lore accurate builds to the character. Or, challenges. Thanks to my hearing disorder, whenever the loud chase music starts, as over the years they increased it in volume, I now no longer am capable of hearing anything but the chase music once it starts playing, so I made a challenge around it and am currently playing nurse with only aura reading perks and play deaf, changing my name to "deaf but all seeing nurse" to go along with it and try and have as much success with it as I can, which honestly turned out less hard than expected given I'm practically deaf while playing the game half the time anyway xD
I won't be a good killer. I'll be one of those who can't kill. I'd rather kill monsters than human.
btw you should totally do a gaming ASMR. LOL 😆
@@jacqtydus I have a hard time putting someone on death hook, or even hooking them twice in a row... only kill I got was someone giving it to me 😅 I have fun without that, anyway. We should have done 2v8 together and confused the survivors lol

Welcome, as a veteran of the game from all the way back to release in 2016, I hope you enjoy your time in the fog and hope you have fun and enjoy the game.
you seem like a good vibe, you should join us for some games sometimes ❤
750~ hour casual player here, glad to see youre enjoying the game! nothing can beat the feeling of knowing both sides are enjoying the match, wins are just a side quest you accidentally complete.
1:35 actions likely. If you aren't familiar and/or are doing oddities to hide, a veteran killer will spot that.
@nekonekomikan sorry I didn't make this clear, but my "I don't know how" was a joke; I do things that even I can tell are new player behaviors lol
I'm a killer main and i only have like 550 hours put into the game but here are some things I've come across while playing 1.) Run away the moment when you see/hear the killer. Running preemptively before the killer can even see you is incredibly strong, makes them wast time chasing you down while you team can work on gens free of charge 2.) Loop multiple tiles. It'll take some time to figureout where each will spawn and what kind you'll get but you should never stay one for very long. You should loop them around a few times, throw the pallet on it (hopefully to stun them) and run to another till. Rinse and repeat as much as you can to buy your team as much as time as possible to do gens. The perk of wendows of opportunity is a great for this and since they got rid of its cool down its be incredibly strong for loopimg killers 3.) Don't be afraid to predrop pallets. I know i know the whole community is screaming at me saying this, and as a whole they are right BUT! there are some situations where pre-droping it can be beneficial. There are certin killers that have have a harder time dealing with pallets so predroping them can help you buy some time (legion will vault pallets instead of breathing them making them come back to breack them later). As a whole you should leave up as many pallets as you can but don't think that you can NEVER predrop them, its based on the situation anf how strong the tile is 4.) This might be the most important rule to DBD. Always ... ALWAYS! ... boop the snoot. I hope this helped :)
Pretty one side of advise, that's funny how you a killer main though
@joshuabeaven8572 what's funny about it?
@timymax it's just such a classic survivor main line. I'm a killer, main too🤣🤣.That's like your favorite thing to say, even though y'all don't know dick about killer
@joshuabeaven8572 but I am a killer main, I'm to bad at lopping to be a Survivor. These tips come strictly from the perspective of a killer
Playing on controller is real hard on this game slow sensitivity and multiple actions mapped to the same button
A couple of things I enjoy when I play. - dodging attacks as I’m running from killers. Especially dodging hatchets being thrown at me. - Playing as Michael Myers with the only intent of surprising people when I attack. - Playing as Dracula and people pet the wolf when I’m in wolf form.
@@TobyTBD those all sound so fun! I've really got to practice dodging. I've yet to meet a Dracula, but I know if I do, I will die trying to pet the wolf
So cool seeing the new player perspective in this game after putting hundreds of hours into it :) can't offer much advice as someone who literally just plays killer but I'm glad your enjoying the game and am shocked by the amount of progress you have already made :) if you keep this up things are going to open up to you which will add new layers of fun to the game.
As someone with 3k+ hours, it's nice to see a new player enjoying the game. Don't let the veterans bring you down (the salty ones). They stared into the abyss and the Entity stared back. I myself have never stressed over the most optimal way to play so I don't even know how to run a lot of the tiles. I just run whichever way makes my monkey brain happy. I also find it more fun to be altruistic and make dumb plays that get me killed. Hope you enjoy the rest of your time in game.
As to the toxicity (I have been playing DBD since 2021 and gaming itself since like 1982 for reference to my experience with the game) that goes with the territory of gaming sadly, and DBD is no different, however if you can just try to laugh at those that are being toxic and realize they are taking the game way too seriously and need to take a break, then move on and play how you want, follow the golden rule, especially when playing Killer. Also I would recommend, even if you prefer playing one side or the other, you should play both sides, to learn how and why a killer might do something that you think as a survivor is unfair or whatever, and again, follow the golden rule. <3
@ragabashmoon1551 yeah, I've not played a lot of games that require playing with strangers, but I've heard that in general. I've also heard dbd players indicate it's particularly bad for them. Like you said, it seems to be more typical. (Tbh I've found worse in Fall Guys LOL) And I do play both sides! I play survivor more, but I've also played some killer. (Just not pictured too much here, as I play it less and didn't screen record it much)
Ive been playing dbd for a year now & im still learning. This game has one of the biggest learning curves of any multiplayer game I've ever played. You got this girl. Once you learn how to loop & flashie save, This game gets more & more addicting. 💪
Crazy watching this as 5k hour player
Welcome, enjoy your stay in the fog. It can be quite frustrating but it's all about having a positive mindset and not letting (some parts of the community) get under your skin. Good luck :D

Wow. I really wish I could approach this game with a blonde mentality.
Welcome! I hope you keep having enjoyable experiences!
@@Thischemicalfire thank you!
Look up some videos on survivor & killer communication. The community has kinda made up some gestures and actions to communicate between each other without voice chat. Knowing these will be helpful. Also the Pig is very overpowered, so remember that she needs to be nerfed all the time.
@FIDELELIZONDO-zw3oo oooh that's a great idea. I know there's some communication, but don't entirely know how it works, so I'll do that!
I love your big white puffball of a cat!!!!

From my experience, Custom Games are go-to mode to play. The only issue is, it requires a friend if you want to play as a survivor.
@sergeychistov8162 yeah, I've played custom and it's been fun! But then my friends that play custom with me wanted to play other games now lol
Omg I cannot wait for you to get your first flashlight save
Here's my advice to any new prospective Dead by Daylight players... GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!!!!!!
Oh no 🤣
DBD is a hard game to get into, as it’s daunting if you know too much. I’m glad that I was very naive about it when I began playing, as I thought it was a lot simpler than it really is. It’s also tough when you play with friends and will therefore get killers who are much too advanced for you as a noob. I think the 2v8 mode is great for new players tho, just to get some muscle memory at least as it’s so fast paced.
Oh damn the 1st time that I started playin this game I had to remember every perk and the time I got the hang of the perks they completely changed 20 perks 😓
I am kinda curious one what you think about it's atmosphere. When I was a beginner, I found building new loadouts/sets to be very fun as I progressed and especially as a survivor, each match being different where I might end up facing an eldritch horror, a haunting killer, or a viscious monster from a well known media.Especially if you don't know anything about the killer roaster, playing survivor can be very exciting.
It’s a great game, but there’s many many many…..made up community rules you are expected to follow.
In full agreement about the play for fun, not to win thing. My personal minigame is, hook everyone twice, then down each one a third time and drop them directly in front of the hook to “”kill”” them. This also has the benefit of making me “lose” by the game’s standards on a regular basis, which gets me matched against less competitive survivors. As killer, going against fully coordinated and prepared survivors is absolute hell if you’re not ready for it. And overpreparing only to go against randoms also feels bad. So I find it easier to stay in low MMR. I also enjoy playing as high-charisma killers like Demodog, Xenomorph, and Dracula (wolf form), cause being social and friendly with survivors can be a much-needed breath of fresh air in this game at times.
@the_furf_of_july4652 omg I love how you play. I hope to run into you some day
I feel that starting as a survivor, you see a more positive side of the community easier because that's literally what you're supposed to do in that role. I started about a week or two ago diving in on the other side. The way that survivors treated me as a brand new player (e.g. teabagging every chance they could or waiting at the gates) was ridiculous. Like I am learning how to play, y'all have max perk level on all slots meanwhile I'm playing Oni on one yellow perk - what are you solving with that behavior?
you look like meg thomas
@@demarcon2073 I'll take that as a compliment! She's currently my main. :)
I dont play survivor alot so this probably isnt trustworthy but i recommend looking forward for most of the time when in chase and look back every now and again
Most Ghostfaces will either be really toxic or pretty friendly, its usually one or the other. Quick tip: As a Ghostface main, dont automatically assume Ghostfaces are friendly (aka crouching up and down at them), we just want to play the game and ive seen far too many survivors look at me and assume i want to throw the game for a couple of crouches. It gets annoying fast so please dont
The best advice for newcomers is to drop the game. The community can be really toxic, along with the poor balancing. There have been some toxic business strategies with the store, too. But if you're already hooked on the game, the best thing you can do is ignore the toxic players. People will come up and scold you on how you're playing wrong and such. It doesn't really matter. Play to get those gens/hooks done. There is nothing wrong with trying to win or have a chill farming match with survivors as killer. Also, don't be afraid to take breaks from this game. It can be too much at times.
Honestly dbd is all about pathing if your pathing is better than the other players you’ll win 9 time out of 10 then the rest is just literally guessing
when you have lots of hours its easy to tell who is new in game and i always go easy on new survivors and if im not ranking up ill let baby killer kill me
Welcome to the Fog. Now get out! No srsly, get out while you can, I beg of you! 😰

@@brandonholmes733 ?
I been playing for like 3 months, definitely love the game.
I'm honestly surprised how fun it is!
Little tip: don't heal teammates at hooks, always find a safer spot unless you want the killer to get an easy down.
That is good to note.
Welcome to the game! Damn, you name sounds so familiar, maybe we even played together? I mostly play killer and go by the strange name "Mori me artist" :P When I realise that a survivor is a newby, I mostly try to let them escape and/or give them hatch, but I admit that I have sometimes gone for the weak link, when things really went south, because even a newby can repair a generator, and sometimes you just got to turn the game 3 v 1, just to get some breathing room. So sorry if that happened to you >__<
Hey! Might have been someone else with my name. It's actually semi-common (it's from Final Fantasy) Yeah, I don't blame anyone for, you know, playing the game. Do what you gotta do. But I do appreciate someone being a little extra kind.
You should learn how to play killer. Even if you don’t like it as much as survivor, learning killer helps you become a better survivor and understand how your opponents think
I play both! I play survivor more, but I also play killer sometimes :)
The most important and easy way I learned was simply watching others. I binged tons of Otz, G_birb, and Slates weekly compilations and one: their very good and 2: very helpful for casually learning the game by osmosis In just a few months I was feeling very confident that I wasn’t a total deadweight at least
That's good to know!
