Amazingly Easy DIY Paint Job Using Spray.Bike!
I recently decided to paint a battered steel road bike frame using Spray.Bike. I plan to use the bike as my hack bike so I didn't want it to be too desirable to thieves but on the flipside nobody wants to own the mangiest bike around!
As well as having a bit of fun I was curious to see if Spray.Bike is as good as I've read. They bill it as a powder-coat in a can so I was interested to see how easy it is to use and whether I could do a good job.
I take you through the whole process including how to prepare the frame, the process of painting and finally finishing.
I chose BLB Greenwich green for the main colour and then finished it off with Gold Keirin Flake top-coat. I had great fun and think that Spray.Bike have made a product that makes it very easy to do an amazing DIY paint job!
I would definitely like to try again in future and maybe be a bit more adventurous and try some stencilling

Snowy MTB Ride - Earlsburn/ Carron Valley - December 2020

A snowy mountain bike ride from Stirling across the Gargunnock Hills and over to the Carron Valley. Conditions were perfect - sunny and cold. Bit of a slushy mess on the return leg mind you! For much of the route my tyre tracks only had animal tracks for company. Evidence of a lot of rabbits, hares and some deer in the snow up by the turbines but no actual sightings.

Snowy mountain bike ride in the hills near Stirling on a perfect winter day! I love how my shadow pivots around in front of me along the snow. Also the wind turbines look pretty comical sped up by 15x! My Santa Cruz Chameleon held up to the conditions nicely!
South Downs Way in a Day - Winchester to Eastbourne

I've wanted to ride the whole of the South Downs Way in one go for a while and went and did it in May 2019. I rode West to East, Winchester to Eastbourne, which in theory would mean more with the prevailing wind than against but as it turned out there was no wind at all! This way around does mean that the first half was relatively easy but not to worry as the second half, after lunch at Amberle...
A Blast Round Woburn XC Trails

Short video mainly about a recent jaunt round the XC trails at Woburn near Milton Keynes on a dry and dusty day. Really twisty, windy trails so trim your bars down and keep your knees in (unlike me...).

Hi, Great job! I'm in exactly the same boat - roughing up my bike frame with existing paint but some chips are down to the metal. Which Rustoleum primer did you use?
I used the Rustoleum Surface Primer Matt finish

before spraying, put the can into HOT water to distribute the paint molecules evenly inside the can!
Where do you get the paint from I can't find any in England
I got it straight from Spray.Bike

Sorry your recording is very poor, sound is appalling !!
Sand after every coat to get a really smooth, mirror-like finish. A flat finish will reflect the most light. Also, in early shots, need to start spraying NOT AT the frame because there is splatter with the first spray then draw the sprayer across the frame with long smooth sweeps all the way along the tube(s).
What grade sandpaper should you use between coats?
Does the Green coat have to be Matt or Gloss paint? Thanks
The stuff I used was a Matt paint. I covered it in a glossy lacquer though so the final product is glossy. I'm not sure if any of the spray.bike colours are anything other than matt

Were you able to get the bike covered with just one can of green spray? And has the paint work held up well?
Yes I only needed one can and there's still plenty left. It's holding up well so far. It does scratch but usually it's when I'm not careful enough
@@JT-lv5im that’s good to hear the paint work is still holding up and it did not require more than one can. I’m thinking to give their plum and white spray a go. I’d never heard of their company until watching your video.

I would say so. Gives a bit more reassurance that the paint will be even and more durable. It's not much effort to prime it either!
Came out nice and i love the color that you chose but in future if you do this again try to start spray out of can away from bike then bring into bike, much better technique then starting on bike like did.
you will lose some spray, but it's worth it. GREAT POINT. I will steal that one!

Hi! I run a Hope headset which has been great. For the Chameleon 7 (like I have) you need a Hope '7' top and a 'J' bottom. I'd recommend finding a local bike shop rather than Amazon though!
how was the durability, did the paint last long?
The paint seems to be lasting well. There's a few chips and scratches but I know when I did them and wouldn't have been surprised if a professional paint job would also have chipped.
Great bike! Totally want a hardtail and its between the SC Chameleon and a Yeti ARC. Did you go Aluminum or Carbon and why? Thanks
Mine's aluminium. When I bought the frame there was no carbon version so had no choice! I'm not sure I'd change it though. Not a terribly heavy bike. I've raced on mine no bother!
Do you think I have to sand the bike even if I want to paint a brand new one?
Yes I think so. It needs to be rough for the paint to stick

Hi there! Cost me in the region of £2300. So somewhere between the D and R specs in terms of price. Getting the spec that I wanted was the most important thing and I reckon it's pretty good value!
Is the chainring boost 3mm or 6mm?
It's 6mm (non-boost). Never had any shifting or chainline issues

Nice. Just waiting for my Chameleon 29" to come in. Ordered it last Friday and will take two weeks to get here. Great bike to compliment my Tallboy. Mark
Awesome! I have same color and size. I’m just under 6ft2 and fits me small but it’s playful. How do the 29er feel? I have plus on my bike but considering going and getting a 29er wheel set. Sweet build again! 🤘
Thanks! I love it with 29" wheels. It's still a capable and playful bike with the big wheels. It pretty much rolls over anything as well

Hi the frame was £650 which is pretty dear for a hardtail but I reckon it was worth it!
How does it ride ? What size frame ?
Its quality to ride! Really confidence inspiring. Climbs and descends very well. I ride a size large. I'm a fraction over 6ft tall with long legs and it fits perfectly.
