1972 Honda CL450 First Ride after mechanical restoration and cleaning
I bought this bike about a year and a half ago, and it sat for about a year. I finally got it on the lift about three months ago, and this is the result. as of today, I've put about 200 miles on it. So much fun to ride. Light and nimble.
It got:
New tires, chain and sprockets, most cables replaced. Lighting converted to LED, and an AGM battery. Gas tank cleaned with Evaporust (like new inside). Rebuilt carbs and petcock. New fuel lines. Fork tubes rebuilt.Thorough cleaning, tail light assembly rebuilt. Replaced both front and back rims.. The list goes on.
I spent a lot of time cleaning this bike. The goal was to keep it as original as possible, meaning not painting anything that did not have to be. the stands and foot peg hardware had to be painted, as did the speedos, the battery box, chainguard, things like that. I cleaned the frame as best as I could, as it really wasn't that bad. The engine... covers. That'll be a project for a second phase. I cleaned a little bit, but it could use more cleaning.
The bike currently has 12,768 on the clock.

My tribute to an old friend. Spent hundreds of hours on the stage with this guy. Heard so many fishin' stories, and they got better every time you heard them. They got even BETTER when Benny and Bill tag teamed them. Unfortunately, I never actually got to go fishing with Bill or Benny. But, that leaves a lot to the imagination too. Bill was a great leader, and took care of his fellow band mates...

At least 25 years ago, my wife bought this chair for me. I planted my butt in it darn near every day for 25 years.. got a lot of life out of the old chair. It was for extra tall guys, and fit me well. My sons managed to break the foot on the chair about 12 or so years in, and I fixed it best I could. This is from a videocassette that I had written off right after it was recorded as bad. It was at the time. The video I could not save, but the audio was able to be cleaned up enough to resurrect the footage. Southern Cross was IMHO a GREAT band, and I'm quite proud of it. Unfortunately, not many recordings of us were captured while we were together, which makes this recording such a jewel. We ...

My dad, Allen King, worked for Berlet Films and shot footage for this film! Thank you so much for uploading. :)
@@aaronking1682 it's a cool film. There are better conversions, I think, but mine is pretty good. :)
@@aaronking1682 audio is the difficult part. Getting a projector with a clean noiseless output is also difficult. I have about 500 films, and I'm sure there are a few that haven't been digitized. I had 2 of the missing "Paddington Bear" films that the copyright owners found out I had, and they are now back with them, and they plan to re-release them in high definition. I've done my job. :)
@talldrummer1 thats so cool! I was actually searching for a video with clean audio of this film. There's a song from the 60s by a little known sunshine pop group called Eternitys Children called "Mr. Bluebird" that I hope to make an arrangement of for my Music Production major at Wester Michigan University. Would you mind if I sampled some audio you've captured for this project as a reference to my dads work?
@@aaronking1682 no.. have at it.

Holy shit Batman!!!! Nice ride!!!
@@oonwing it broke down on me this weekend. Gonna have to break down and replace the tank. 😡
@@talldrummer1 Worth it. LOVE HURTS!!!
@@oonwing yeah, it's worth it. AC compressor locked up end of last summer. Gonna have to throw about 3 grand at it soon. It's great otherwise. Drives well, sounds great, good power.
@talldrummer1 I live in DC, my 06 Silverado has a 6.3, my 2001 Cadillac Eldorado ETC less than 100k miles has been sideswipped. I'm trying to move, it literally makes me cry when i look at my Eldorado.... 3 or 5 grand....it's worth it.
I saw one today at The Grist Mill restaurant in Seekonk, Massachusetts.
Hi thanks for sharing! Did you take down the Seeburg and Hupfeld orchestrion videos? I'm sorry they're gone. Was it because the instruments sold, or did you pull them down for some other reason? This Duo-Art sounds great BTW.
Holy smokes I thought that was the player (since the lower part of the video was obscured while leaving my comment) and then clicked to find he hand played this. He played very well!

@@mystictraveler6228 I had the CL350 in red with white stripe last year. I had some fun with it, then sold it.
I had a 68 cl 450 around about 1972.Good memories but I never saw the bike.

Congratulations on the restore. Those engines are bulletproof!
@@_JimS yes they are! I wasn't worried for a moment about the engine when I bought it. It wasn't stuck... :)
Parts are hard to find for that bike. I had a 550 Honda and getting parts was a nightmare.
@@sirjhonson8218 Depends on what you need. Exhaust is expensive and hard to find. I found everything else I needed. Ebay is the best place to find many things. I needed new rubber isolater mounts for the speedo and tach. Honda still makes them. Bolts and isolating rubber mounts for the tail light assembly. Honda still has them. Honda still has a lot for these old bikes.
Going forward check out Rubber City Vintage Cycle in Akron Ohio, RCVC
I had a high school teacher that had a '73 Charger, with the three little widows. It was light blue, with a white top and white interior. While it's not a '68-'70 Charger, I do like the design. More of a sporty personal luxury car. The one thing I would do is get rid of that ugly stick on black spoiler. It ruins the looks of the whole car.
I helped put an engine in one that looked just like this car when I was 14 it was white on white vinyl top SE brougham 400 with the thermoquad carb it shouldnt of needed an engine but it belonged to a 18 yo kid anyway i fell in love with that car
Very nice,,how much??
Ah, the memories! My stepdad owned this same car! We took it to the races in Riverside, California. When I was 18 I was able to drive in the Richard Petty Fan Club parade lap prior to the race. They only let us get up to 55mph. 😂
Very nice original SE I’d say there isn’t much of these left that someone hasn’t hacked up for mods the white on this looks great with wheels has a clean look I’d be proud of that one I remember those arm rest in middle of the seats like that very comfortable.
Looks great! 👍 Like a driver should!
Thanks!
Hey! What was the name of the catamaran. I see the link to Cool Cat, above, but this seems to be a different catamaran?
Not sure. I guess we didn't pay attention to that. I'll look through my pics and see if wegot a pic. Booked through Princess Cruises..
Beauty... 😊 I plan to buy the same. Enjoy! 😊
NICE, except the tires.
That was my first car ❤
I think the best part of this video is his attitude. The car has a lot of work to be done on it but his approach was “pretty happy with it” that’s the attitude 👍
Thanks. Actually, body/frame is the best part. Intereior is good.. needs a head liner. Suspension has seen betterdays, particularly the leaf springs. It'll all get replaced eventually. Amazing though how nice of a ride it still has..
But that are easy to replace parts. The most important is body. Enjoy... 😊
You'd be amazed how much rust it under that top. X2 on the spoilers delete 😊
What an amazing instrument! I'm impressed by how well the pipes have been tuned. Has a remarkable orchestra sound! Thankyou so Much!
was the stop detail video ever uploaded? I'd be very interested to see more about the details of this wonderfull instrument
What rearend and gear ratio do you have on yours? Mine is an 8.25 with 2.76 gears. It is a 400-4 bbl.
Trading Places right?!?!
Very nice, my very first car was a 1973 Dodge Charger S.E 400 Auto green ext/ green interior…now I currently own a 1971 Plymouth GTX curious yellow and all numbers matching.😊
I had the same car with a 400- 2 brl carb and a console shift. I did not move so I looked for a 340 & a 4 speed car, sold the SE in about a year when I found a 1972 4 speed with only a 318 and that car did not move either. Finally ended up with a 1973 Brewsters green with 455 with a 4 speed. That car moved!
Here's the story of my first car. My older brother bought his first car for 700 bucks. It was a 67 camero. Red with a white stripe around the front end. My 2 best buddies in high school had gotten their first cars as soon as they got their license at 16 yrs old. One had a silver 69 firebird convertible with a 400 V8 with a 4 speed manual trans. duel exhaust . He also had a red 78 Z-28 T-top 4speed manual trans and a 79 silver anniversary edition transam. All 3 cars were mint condition. My other bud had a red 68 mustang convertible and a gold 78 T-top trans am with a 6.6 ltr and auto trans. Both of his cars were mint condition. I had dropped hints to my parents for a year before i turned 16 that Id sure love to have a camero for my birthday. Well....I got a card and a 20 dollar bill. I needed to buy myself a car and so i started saving. I got a part time job at a local gas station and started saving my money. Finally when I was a senior and 18 yrs old I had managed to gather up 1800 bucks and saw a for sale add in auto trader magazine for a 1969 camero ss convertible indy pace car edition. My buddies offered to give me a ride to go check it out. The car was stock original and like new condition. White with orange stripes and the official indy 500 pace car edition logos on the doors and a white convertible top. Only thing was the white top was dirty and the rear plastic window had some yellowing and seemed to be getting brittle. Also the exhaust had been replaced with duel thrush mufflers and it needed the hangers to be installed. The guy was asking 1500 for the car. I wanted a car i could drive home that day. I didnt want to wait any more and wasnt interested cause i didnt want to buy anything that needed to be worked on before i could drive it so i passed on the camero. Feeling disappointed we were gonna head back home with no car for me. It was a 2 hour drive back to home so before we left we stopped at a Hardees to get lunch b4 we headed back. While we were there my bud with the mustang was paging through auto trader mag and saw a car in there. He says hey check this out. It was a yellow 1973 Charger SE Brougham. Black vinyl top, 23000 miles, 400 4brl, auto trans on the floor, center console, black interior, bucket seats, a/c, cruze control, rear air shocks, and chrome mag wheels all around with raised white letter wide track radial 60's tires. Also had am/fm casette with jensen 6x9 speakers. Guy wanted 1700 for it. I really wanted a camero rag top but we decided to go look at the car. I talked the guy down to 1600 and drove it home. Car was huge. Long hood, long doors, huge trunk and took me forever but first thing I did was wash it and put on 3 coats of turtle wax. The car had amazing top speed and looked so sweet. I Finally had bought and owned my first car. But the story takes a turn for the worse.... I was driving home with my buddies in my car one night after a fun night out in a town that was twenty some miles or so from where we lived. I decided to hold the car full throttle and let it run out to see how fast it would go. After wfo for roughly 7 miles or so i saw the oil pressure gauge drop and then go back up but only to half of what it normally was at. I left off the gas pedal completely and let the car coast for what seemed like 10 minutes before it finally slowed down to 55 mph and then drove the rest of the way home. The next morning I went and started my car to go to school and i heard this horrible knocking sound. It had spun a rod bearing and needed a rebuild or a new engine. 😢 Our school had a teacher who taught small engine classes and also auto mechanic classes. He raced as a hobby at Brainerd international raceway in Minnesota and at Rock Falls in Wi. He had a metallic purple 69 barracuda that was a 1/4 mile dragster. His car had the same 400 big block engine as my Charger did. I asked him if he would do a rebuild on my engine and he agreed. He worked on my car in his shop in his "spare" time and so it took awhile for him to get it done. I had to go back to riding the school bus 14 miles (half of it was bumpy gravel roads) every day for the rest of my senior year of high school. 😔 Instead of my sweet hot rod I Had to borrow my parents station wagon to take my girl to prom. About 3 weeks after I graduated H.S. (in 1982) My shop instructor was finally done with my engine rebuild. I took it home and put on a new duel exhaust from the headers on back. 2 Walker turbo flow mufflers, twin tail pipes followed up with chrome tips out the back one on each side. Then drove it 40 miles to get 4 brand new BF Goodwrench RWL wide track radial 60's mounted on the craigar ss mags. Finally .... I could drive my own car again. 😀 But then.....with only 135 miles on the rebuilt engine I slid off of a 30 mph 90' corner going 85 mph and slid sideways into two giant trees. One tree hit dead center of the front passenger wheel and crushed the headers flat against the engine block with the wheel and A arm assembly. The other tree hit the pass. side in between the rear wheel and rear bumper and folded that rear qtr panel into a v shape that went 1/2 way through the trunk. Luckily I walked away from the crash unhurt. I didnt have full coverage insurance and now my car was totalled. Only reason I was going so fast was I was going to my brothers wedding rehearsal. The photographer was at the rehearsal to take all the wedding photos to save the hassel from wedding day. I was my brothers best man and i was late. I sold the car after that for 400 bucks. 😢😭 This is just one of the hundreds of heart breaking things Ive experienced in my 60 yrs that shouldve killed me but I survived. I need to write a book . By the way I Love yur car dude. Shes a beauty.
Wow. That's a sad story. I had a tripple black one just like this in the early eighties, and I traded it for a crappy Ford econoline panel van. WTH was I thinking?
No way. The end of an era.
It just had to go.
That's a real nice car! I had a B5 blue 73 w/400. I would love to find another one for my wife. I have a 74 dart sport that I'm in the middle of cloaning into a 71 demon. Thanks for sharing your video. Mopar or no car.😊
Happy New Year! Check Donley Auctions in Illinois. They have a Bartholomew and an Encore Banjo coming up for auction toward the end of the month.
My family were the third owners of a ‘71 R/T from 1986 - 2008. It had the 440 Magnum with the 727 and Slap-Stik console shifter. Copper Bronze Metallic with full black vinyl roof, loaded with options, including power windows, AC, houndstooth seats, AM/FM with cassette deck/recorder (working), covered headlights with the spray washer brushes. Phenomenal car that my folks had to sell due to personal hardship - we considered it a member of the family for the years we had it. My father would daily drive it during summers throughout the 90s…as a work commmuter! 🤘 Awesome ride, brings back great memories - enjoy!!
Add intake snorkel and dash clock to your 'to do' list....
white interiors only look good for a few days - then WHAMMO - they're dirty !!
My Dad gave me that car when I started driving in 1976. It was bright blue with that lovely white top with the opera windows. I loved that car.

My Dad also gave me mine two or three years after yours did (in 1978 or 1979) it was just like yours but lime green with a 400 engine 🙂
I also had her in Mopar Blue white mud flaps and wide white strip on tires she was so beautiful and I was a really popular girl driving her around town 😂🎉

now thats a car, they aint building them like they used to.
She said "oh ya...right?" Mine woulda have been "oh hell nooo...you dont need another carrrrr!!" 😢
Yes it’s in great almost original shape, but can you really call it a survivor with black paint where white is supposed to be and you said it had an electric fuel pump on it when you got it. So someone has monkeyed with it some ,and altered things. Not knocking you or it but to me survivor to me hasn’t had alterations just aged and worn but original.
Whatever.. lol
The Sanfillipo Helios is a very early III/39 from about 1912. It has the early piano with the 'A' bass, and, originally, had no expression control device. Mac's III/42 is the rarest of the rare. It is the largest Helios still in existence, and has the later piano with the deeper 'D' bass scale. It was built in the late 1920s and has ALL of the Hupfeld bells and whistles that could be provided. This was not the standard Helios model. It is of Hupfeld Concert specifications.
Does this have more ranks than the sanfillipo example?
They have the same number of ranks with a slight variation in the style of pipework. @@christiantedesco1477
