Another Ultimate ASMR Knife Sharpening. Full Process. 4K/HD Sound. No Talk. Gratuitous. Satisfying.
Appreciate this? Toss a coin… hit the “Thanks” button to send me a tip! Thanks!
A simple, beautiful, speechless long-form depiction of a single kitchen knife being refreshed, recorded in satisfyingly high quality audio and video.
Unlike other knife sharpening ASMR videos, this one is the entire process, from stone prep through final stropping.
The media quality is ridiculous. Did I really bring $7500 of recording equipment to bear on a $7 knife sharpening job? Yes... yes I did. For you, dear viewer. It's recorded in 4K video with 48k/24 bit audio... really really luxurious.
I didn't talk at all. I don't like my voice, and I don't want to distract you with that sound, or my choice of words, or failures in diction, or lack of Tolkien or Harry Potter references, or...
This is slow. I didn't work at full speed, just for you, dear viewer, to see and hear every luscious stroke.
It's gratuitous. I felt for burrs nice and close to the mic. I did lots of extra stropping strokes. I made sure that not only the sharpness on par, but the appearance was a big focus. And then I still worked extra. Because it sounds awesome.
Is it satisfying? I mean, I like to think of knife sharpening as therapy I get others to pay for. I love doing it. I love feeling it and seeing it and hearing it. I hope you do too.
So, today, I couldn't pass up a perfect day: the outdoor noise from wind or vehicles was at a minimum, everyone else in the house had things they could do, it wasn't too hot or cold to make the house uncomfortable. So I turned off the air conditioner, and the refrigerator, and the water cooler, and the ceiling fan two rooms over... about as pristine as I can get my house.
I brought to bear one of my other hobbies: audio engineering. I recorded this in Mid/Side stereo, with a Gefell M300 small diaphragm condenser pointing toward the whetstone right next to the camera (iPhone 15 ProMax), and a Royer R-122 MkII ribbon mic (native Figure 8 pickup pattern) facing sideways over the M300. Microphones fed into the internal preamp of my RME Babyface Pro FS interface. I then processed it in Logic to do the M/S decoding, tweaked a few rogue dynamics, and shaped the EQ, leaving it in 48k/24 bit as recorded.
Whetstones used: Shapton Rockstar 500 grit, and Naniwa Pro 800 grit. The lapping stone I used on the Shapton is an Atoma 400 grit diamond plate. The strop is one I made, with 4 micron diamond emulsion.

I recorded as close to the same thing as I could, three weeks apart on the same set of Straight Up Strings mandolin heavy gauge. Recorded on my iPhone 15 ProMax, so there's some auto-gain stuff it's doing that I can't control. Overall, the strings have stayed very consistent even after fairly heavy playing for three weeks. They stay in tune even when whacking them really hard, and they've got a...

    Really appreciate this video. I have several expensive instruments (including a July 9th Red Diamond), and I've always been afraid to work on them. The wait to get them serviced by local luthiers is also something I don't want to do, especially for something as simple as setting the intonation properly. Your guide to setting the intonation (a process I was already familiar with) gave me the confidence that I could do it myself. My intonation was slightly off on the treble side (been off since I got it) on my RD, and the action was set a bit high for my tastes. Now my RD plays as nice and smooth as my Gibson MM, but it sounds about 10x better. Really appreciate your stuff, Phil.

    From BC Canada: Hey Phil I like the way you have infused such lovely flow to this always intriguing piece. I have experimented with many different interpretations and have heard many different renditions on the mando. I’m curious - do you find when you play it that you always play it the same way? Or do you vary your interpretations? A beautiful posting. Many thanks.

    • @PhilWoodhull

      Thanks for the wonderful comments! I tend to vary a bit in interpretations, but less and less as time goes on I think. You can compare this video with my complete Cello Suites recording posted April 2021, and with the May 2024 album I just released (all also posted in my channel here.) I think you’ll find I tend to play with a fairly consistent flavor, but never exactly the same. Thanks again!

    A question: for Menuet II, measure 7, the last note is a B flat?

    • @PhilWoodhull
      @PhilWoodhull หลายเดือนก่อน

      I based my performance here from the Polo violin transcription, which has a B natural there specifically with the accidental.

    • @charlesfritter9686
      @charlesfritter9686 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the reply Phil. I have read the only surviving copy of the cello suites is a transcription by Bach’s wife, and it is claimed that apparent ‘errors’ were present. Thus, available music for these often has changes made by various ‘experts’. I have learned the piece with a B flat in that measure so I will continue to play it that way. Happy picking.

    • @charlesfritter9686
      @charlesfritter9686 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PhilWoodhull Phil, I was intrigued by this and had to find more info. I was reminded of something I forgot: Minuet II is written in D dorian so it has a raised 6th which accounts for the B natural instead of the B flat. So now I will relearn this movement with a B natural.

    • @charlesfritter9686
      @charlesfritter9686 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Phil, after more investigation I discovered two things: there exists some controversy about the dorian mode aspect of Minuet II, CS1, apparently because it appears in the Anna Magdalena transcription- but only for bars 3 and 7. Secondly, I found some references to possibly the original Bach score had been found which supposedly had an E natural in measure 3, but an E flat in measure 7. Haha, it's getting interesting. But I can say cellist Inbal Segev uses E natural in bars 3 and 7. I have a lot of confidence in Inbal so I will play as she does. Hope you are well.

      @charlesfritter9686 According to the scans of the four 18th century manuscripts on jsbachcellosuites.com, the A-M and Westphal manuscripts have Eb-Enat. The Kellner manuscript has Eb-Eb. I can’t tell what the Unknown Author, late 18th century manuscript says in measure 7 (looks like C??) but measure 3 is Eb.

I wondering if any of you have tried the Chris Thile signature pick ? I would like to see that pick in a comparison with a bluechip ..

      One can use flat-wound or flat-top strings, as I have at a couple times in the past. I think there’s a way to shift and maybe condition one’s callouses as well in ways that help, but I’m not familiar. Thile seems to squeak very little, somehow.

    I have been learning to play the violin/fiddle a little over a year. Would learning the mandolin help me to improve my violin/fiddle techniques?

    • @PhilWoodhull
      @PhilWoodhull 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In terms of building up general music skills and maybe gaining extra familiarity with the fingerboard, yes. In terms of technique, no: even though the fingering is “the same,” the differences with using a fretboard vs a violin fingerboard are *juuuust* big enough to make them only moderately compatible and possibly confusing for someone still beginning with violin/fiddle. In the end, while one won’t be terribly helpful learning the technique of the other, the ability to gain overall musical skill while learning and playing multiple instruments makes the proposition net positive. Go for it!
