Which nerves are involved in arm abduction?
This slide explains the key nerves and muscles involved in the different phases of arm abduction. The suprascapular nerve innervates the supraspinatus muscle, which is responsible for the first 30º of arm abduction. From 30º to 90º, the axillary nerve takes over, innervating the deltoid muscle, a major player in shoulder movement. Once the arm is abducted beyond 90º, the accessory nerve innervates the trapezius muscle, allowing for the final phase of abduction by stabilizing and lifting the scapula. Together, these nerves and muscles ensure smooth and coordinated arm abduction.

Cushing's triad of intracranial hypertension
Cushing's triad is a clinical sign of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and consists of three key components: hypertension, bradycardia, and irregular respiration. This triad occurs as a result of the body's response to rising ICP, which can compromise cerebral blood flow. The elevated blood pressure (hypertension) is the body's attempt to maintain cerebral perfusion, while the slow heart r...
Which cranial nerves innervate the tongue?
The innervation of the tongue is governed by several cranial nerves, each responsible for different functions. The trigeminal nerve (CN V) provides general sensation, such as touch, pain, and temperature, to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. The facial nerve (CN VII) is responsible for taste sensation in the same region. The glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) governs both general sensation and...
Quick review of the branches of the trigeminal nerve
The trigeminal nerve, also known as cranial nerve V, has three major branches: the ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3) branches. The ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) branches are purely sensory, providing sensation to the upper and midface, including areas like the forehead, eyes, cheeks, and upper lip. The mandibular branch (V3) is a mixed nerve, responsible for both sensory...
