I've had this LP for many years. I also bought the book of the songs. Years later, when my piano playing skills were up to it, I performed "I sit beside the fire and sing" in a concert. Great memories.

William Elvin’s voice sounds remarkably similar to that of Paul Robeson

Love this to pieces! Long time ago, in the 1970's I borrowed this LP from the British Council library in Helsinki, and before having to return it, made a copy on a C-cassette, which I listened to a lot. Eventually I remembered even where the scratches were on the much-borrowed LP. Nice to find a better-quality recording. I have also a book "The Song Goes Ever On", which has the music by Donald Swann, and notes by Tolkien.

Bought this LP over 50 years ago and listening now I am shocked and amazed that I still remember every word... Especially the Elvish and to this day the tunes (Mr. Swans' I'm sure) still take me back to a kinder and less complicated time. Thank you Condo and thank you JRR if England had a National Living Treasure you'd have been one. And, Christopher Tolkien, thank you from all of us who remember your father - The Creator of Middle Earth. PS - hristopher, I hated the movie as much as you did. .

I have this and the other Caedmon album of JRRT speaking. Tolkien reading is always wonderful to hear, but the songs sung this way are so Gilbert & Sullivan. The times I suppose... I much prefer the Stephen Oliver/BBC melodies that I grew up with.

Its crazy hearing the old one speak it, he really brings a rhythm and cadence to the writing that shows his mastery of english, diction, meter, lyricism etc..

I remember the first time reading Lord of the Rings. I loved the books but I found Tom Bombadil a bore. The second time reading it through I managed to get through, and found I enjoyed some of the poems. Third time through and I discovered the Tom Bombadil, Goldberry and the Old Forest became one of my favorite sections in the whole story.

If you like this music, you might enjoy this as well - th-cam.com/video/GvFWMHuDg_Q/w-d-xo.html It's a presentation and recital by tenor Richard G. Leonberger (accompanied by William Phemister on piano), who wrote his dissertation on the Donald Swann song cycle that is on the second side of this record. Leonberger has a beautiful voice, and his enthusiasm for Tolkien, Middle Earth, and Donald Swann's music is lovely.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was a member of the Record Club of America, and I ordered this from the Schwann Catalogue, when it was first released. back in thepsychadelic sixties. I listened to the songs over and over, and played a few melodic lines. Over the years my Vinel collection was lost. I also regret the loss of my high end; turn table, amp, speakers etc. You have a good looking set up. and again I think you. I thought I would never hear these songs again, I'd offer you a bowl, in gratitude.

29:31 In the willow-meads of Tasarinan I walked in the Spring. Ah! the sight and the smell of the Spring in Nan-tasarion! And I said that was good. I wandered in Summer in the elm-woods of Ossiriand. Ah! the light and the music in the Summer by the Seven Rivers of Ossir! And I thought that was best. To the beeches of Neldoreth I came in the Autumn. Ah! the gold and the red and the sighing of leaves in the Autumn in Taur-na-neldor! It was more than my desire. To the pine-trees upon the highland of Dorthonion I climbed in the Winter. Ah! the wind and the whiteness and the black branches of Winter upon Orod-na-Thôn! My voice went up and sang in the sky. And now all those lands lie under the wave, And I walk in Ambarona, in Tauremorna, in Aldalómë, In my own land, in the country of Fangorn, Where the roots are long, And the years lie thicker than the leaves In Tauremornalómë. After finishing this song Treebeard walked on silently through the silent woods.
