A South African Beekeeper
Sifting, sorting, allocating. The good from the bad.
Working through some hives that have come back from pollination, some need further TLC to get them going and others are boiling over. Many factors could be the reason here, but today's main objective is to identify what's what and separate them.

Welcome! So you got tired of scutellata! 😂
amazing video on queen rearing scutellata. Could you perhaps tell me if there's any sort of secret ingredient or vital factors in the process to consider when trying?
I think it’s crowded, maybe hence they wanna supersede the current Queen

Hi Daniel. Tell me about your feeding. The boys here in Cape Town don't seem to be positive about the idea. Have you seen benefits from this practise?
Very interesting 👌
Hi Daniel can I split a hive now June in jhb?
got to ask cant you just transport the bees to the cape region instead of killing them i take it the female has evolved into a queen essentially making it a cape bee stack which overtook another colony i also assume the bees dont have to be killed in the cape region. I dont know so would love to know
Excellent Learned a lot here Thanks Daniel. Can you explain the reason why you don’t use the Queen excluder?
hey daniel i am from south africa and i like your information i want to start beekeeping how can i get in touch with you for more information
Goeie middag, ek is ñ jong byeboer van Botswana. Ek leer so baie van jou video's. Sal graag met jou wil gesels
The Capensis bees look a lot like what we call here in the USA, Carniolin bees.
Bee season is almost done here in northern USA. We seem to have had a good year. Harvest is looking great. Hope you are doing well. Very interesting stuff. My grandpa raised bees in the 1970s in Rhodesia. Now I raise them here. I would love to visit one day and learn some more. Dankie meneer!
👍
can you not trade Capensis to the western cape bee farmers, we just about have only capensis in the green belt area (Garden Route)
Cant wait to see the final results! Love your vids Daniel
Those plastic yellow gloves work well over your other gloves I use them too
Hi Trish, these are actually just a heavy duty latex glove that we import I don't have an inner glove on. They work nicely for days like this where the bees are calm. You'll notice how the glove cuff at times shifts forward and exposes my arm. This is a huge NO for when these bees get a bit stronger.
Hey Daniel. Just a question on that second box you put a super where the Queen was in the lid. Is there a reason you choose not to centre the brood in the box by shifting all the frames across, or is it not necessary?
Hey Stuart, you are correct I am normally pedantic about centralizing the brood nest. In this case I was confident they had enough bees to expand the nest and within a couple weeks they'll be 8 + Frames of Brood.
Eloquent intelligent approach and one of the most informative vids I’ve seen! Thank you to you and your team.
Great video! Where was this shot?
This is up in Limpopo.
Which province do you live in .. ? If you don’t mind me asking
I'm based in Gauteng but we migrate our hives through all neighbouring provinces.
Shoutout to you my man ❤️ I’m also starting my journey
what the bees collect on these dry fields ? Is there any nectar or pollen ?
In my previous videos i point out the pollen coming in. But we are supplement feeding them to compensate for poor quality pollens and absence of nectar. I monitor their nutrition very closely.
Very good advice Danie. I follow the same procedure but with untreated wood chips. I've managed to get my smoker smoking for a long time. As you have said,a smoker make or break you're day🐳
Hi Daniel, your videos are really interesting thanks. It seems it is in your backyard do the bees not bother neighbours or yourselves being in such close proximity
Hello Sinaylin, thanks for the comment. No it is illegal to keep bees in the suburbs in Johannesburg. Our African honey bee can be extremely dangerous. These bees were merely small young swarms I was nursing for a couple weeks during lock down. I moved them off to a farm a couple weeks later where they grew to become production colonies.
I live in SA and would like to start beekeeping but I have no idea how. Do you have any advice to offer on where to start? A swarm of bees have moved in under my wendy and I would like to transfer them to a hive, do you have any advice on how to lure them to a new home? I want to gather as much information as I can before attempting to disrupt bees if I do not have all the right equipment.
Hi Zhaan, great to hear your enthusiasm to start beekeeping. I can definitely help you out and point you in the right direction. Please drop me a whatsapp on 082 698 9088 and I'll be able to send you some more info. Bee Blessed Daniel
Thx mater Altyd lekker om te leer
What is a capenses, is it a honeybee or native to SA
@@mike2900 ok Mike, thanks for the info mate. Yes we don’t have these bees in Australia, but very sure I remember a mate of mine who was South African 1984/87 tell me about a similar or same bee back then.
Absolutely sad what is happining to the beekeeping industry in SA, Australia here is just flourishing in the number of new beekeepers here, maybe SA need to have beekeeping pages on face book, more beekeeping club ect, thanks for sharing this Daniel always interesting to see what our European cousins are up to in beekeeping in South Africa
Keep it up! Good video and very informative. Watching here in Australia

Awesome presentation. Sorry to hear about your loss.
Hi Daniel So glad I found found a SA beekeeper on TH-cam. Love to know in which area you live. Got a lot of ????
Hi Daniel thanks for the video. Do Have any advice on how to start keeping bees.like how to catch a migrating swarm for instance, equipment needed, taking of your hive
Thank you for the informative video.
Awesome Thank you Daniel so great to hear from a South African Bee Keeper I am always watching all the overseas clips i am a Female Novice at Bee Keeping and cant wait to do my first Spring inspection in a week or 2 after this icy Cape Town Weather I purchased a Flow Hive with a Queen Separator as I cant lift these heavy Boxes and i cant wait to add it to my Bottom Brood box, pass your details below so we can support you
Hello, I'd like to place an order of the starter Bee Keeping I have limited space behind my house staying in the Nigel Dunnottar. Can I only do Bee Keeping for my family honey consumption not interested in commercial farming for now. Maybe when I find it interesting I'll look into finding a place far away from my place of residence. I'll also check the local municipality by-laws of small bee keeping. 1. How much will you charge for a complete Bee set including harvesting tools and suit
Thank you for the informative video! How did you mix their feed and does it not drip into the hive?
I love your videos and hope we meet one day
Iam also interested to be a beer keeper I very love your videos. please continue posting more videos
Hi Daniel. Thanks for giving some SA content. Can you please make a video of how you make your boxes please? Would be really helpfull.
How often do you open your hives in the winter ? or is it better to leave them alone from the end of this month when temperatures start dropping
Nice Vids Daniel. Hang in there :)
Thanks Daniel, great info. Just a suggesting on pollen pattie, don't remove the wax paper at the top of the pattie, let the bees do it. Wax paper helps keep hive beetle away
What’s in your bottles? Sugar water ? Or just water
Yes it is a sugar water solution. No need to feed bees plain water using this method. I will be doing a video soon on the basics of feeding bees. Keep an eye out for that.
Thank you very much - this is an excellent video and I have learnt a huge amount - your 3 step diagnostic process is excellent¬
Herman, your relation to P W Botha at all are you, I use to like PW
Hi. I am very new. I'm in the Eastern Cape. My mentor from who I bought everything over is mostly missing in action. I've seen a few of these little black bees around my hives. The others seem to be killing them. Could you perhaps share a video with the different swarms? Cape and African Honey Bees. Some of the black bees as only one orange stripe on them.
Hi Lohan, I'm sorry to hear of your mentor being MIA. Please contact me on WhatsApp and I will be able to walk you through the steps I mention on how to identifya capensis invasion. The colour of the bee is not enough to diagnose correctly. Thanks 082 698 9088

Thanks Daniel ! A really informative video! thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Condolences for your loss.
Hi Daniël, thank you for the video and the channel! I was so happy when I found a South African beekeeping channel and I enjoy the content. Something that you can add to make this video even better is closeup photos (like the great photo showing the capensis eggs in the cells) that shows the difference between the two types of bees. In the video the bees are so small that it's hard to see how the capensis look like. Thank you once again! Great stuff!
Hi Danie, thanks for the feedback and encouragement. Its greatly appreciated. I like that idea, I'll see what photos I've got. Thanks Bee Blessed.
Thanks Daniel! I learnt alot. Keep going you adding alot of value.
