Swing dancing class recap - advanced inside turn variations
In this video we start with the classic inside turn and explore a bunch of variations you can do on the end of the turn, starting with easy ones such as the classic pass by and circle to closed, then moving up to slightly harder swing out and outside turn, and ending with a fancy outside turn with extra free spin.
As with all turns, staying on your balance with your feet under your hips is key, and leads should keep their arms neutral unless you're asking your follow to move. With these more complex moves it's imperative that you keep the communication with your follow as clear and simple as possible to avoid confusion!

Phew... while the weather is cold it's time for the dancing to get hot! In this week's Level 2/Intermediate class we picked up the pace with some fast dancing. First we taught a simple sequence that works really well for fast tempos to suit a 12 bar blues structure, and then learned a simplified footwork for our 8-beat that takes out all those tricky triple steps. Our sequence also uses 6-beat ...

In this class we explored one of the core aspects of Blues dancing and music: call and response. This concept has it's roots in African musical and dance traditions, work songs and gospel, and is a wonderful way to both show our respects to the African American origins of this music and dance style, and also to create a true conversation with our partner. Call and response can be thought of "ye...

In this class we explored the beautiful world of Ballroomin' Blues and the super smooth and sassy Ocho. Ballroomin' Blues is danced to slower jazzier styles of Blues music, and emphasises key aspects of Blues dancing and its roots in African American music and dance: groundedness, lag, improvisation and cool. We explored how to initiate the Echo, key points around leading and following it, corr...

This class explores a bunch of ideas about what you can do "between" the moves to take a break or fill time. There's loads of reasons why you might want to take a break: maybe the music is fast and you want to catch your breath, or the band is doing a long drum solo that's hard to dance to, or you're boxed in on the dance floor and don't have room for a big swing out, or maybe you're just tryin...

In this class we worked on Corridors: a super smooth, flowing sequence of travelling turns using the classic Slow Drag footwork. A tip for everyone is to aim for constant movement, and really use ALL the music rather than rushing to get to the end - this creates a beautiful smooth flow. When it comes to turns, particularly travelling turns as in the Corridor move, drawing your tummy muscles in,...

In this month's Blues class we explored the wonderful world of Texas Shuffle. This is a Jukin' style of Blues dancing that is done to music with a strong shuffle beat and is characterised by lots of fancy footwork with the feet slipping and sliding across the floor, as well as a strong push and pull in the connection style. This is a bit more technical that some of the styles of Blues that we u...

This week we had some fun playing with unusual ways of catching or connecting with our partner. We're all familiar with the standard way of connecting (closed position and open position). But there's so many more ways to lead and follow fun and interesting moves! We played with a variation on a tuck turn to open where the lead's left hand takes the follow's left hand for a super fun redirection...

In this week's class we ramped up the difficulty with some fancy Tandem Charleston. We started with an 8-count entry to Tandem (rather than the 10 count version that is more common) then added a follow turn, and a tricky transition to "Reverse Tandem" where the follow is in front of the lead - I know... what???? We finished the class with a block turn which can be used to exit Tandem or to go b...

This week we gave you a real brain-buster - mixing rhythms! This is an essential skill for all Intermediate dancers as it allows you to really connect to the music in a playful and creative way. It can be tricky to lead and follow though - the key points to remember are: clarity, tone, shape, travel, and pulse. We learned a fun sequence that includes 8-beat swing, Charleston, 6-beat and even 4-...

In this class we learned Savoy Walk - a beautiful Ballroomin' style of Blues dancing. This dance is characterised by continuous travel, a mixture of quick and slow steps and can include flashy moves to jazz things up. We started easy with a nice little Promenade, before dialing up the difficulty with some tricky Grapevines. With all of these moves, clarity from the leader is really key, and whi...

We've been wanting to teach these more advanced dips and tricks for a while... it's always fun to really dig your teeth into a challenging move with some tricky technique! In this class we look at a fun variation on the standard side by side dip, where the orientation is reversed - make sure you have a really strong arm connection before attempting the lean! Then we did the lunge dip which star...

I do recommend Werner Kern shoes. They make top class dance shoes for all the dance styles, they have a line dedicated to swing dances too. The company is based in Germany.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't heard of that brand before so I took a look at their website and they have some shoes that would definitely work for Swing Dancing! I'd avoid anything with a narrow or high heel (like you might wear for Latin dance styles) as it can be a bit dangerous for Swing Dancing. But their dance sneakers look really cute and comfortable, and the low block heels look great too.

@@joyuen3649 You're welcome! The quality of the shoes is superb, superior to many brands I've tried over the years, and they make shoes for wider feet too. I have a pair of their sneakers and of Emma Comfort low-heel shoes (and some more for Latin dances :-)).
