    The main mistake he made was trying to move a pot that was over filled. To avoid this, he should have let this pot cool down for approx 2 hours so the top forms a crust, and motlen slag would not pour when he moved it.

    • @SteelChannel1
      @SteelChannel1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you might be right, but if a pot stays under the oven for 2 hours, it could cause a slight disruption in the production process. What are your thoughts on this?

      We do it at work when there isn’t enough free board in our pots. A short delay in production isn’t worth someone’s life or the longevity of the equipment either

    • @SteelChannel1
      @SteelChannel1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The number of hours a slag pot carrier works in a day or during a shift can vary depending on several factors such as the specific operations of the facility, production requirements, maintenance schedules, and safety regulations. Typically, in industrial settings, slag pot carriers may operate for several hours continuously during a shift, which can range from 8 to 12 hours per day. However, it's essential to consult the specific policies and practices of the company or facility where the slag pot carrier is being used to determine the exact operating hours. Additionally, adherence to safety guidelines and regulations is crucial in determining operational schedules.

    Bad design ! After undergoing many thermal cycles, a pot often becomes 'deformable', and simply the act of trying to lift it will be enough to crush the sides of the pot. You avoid this problem by lifting the pot with a RING the fully encloses the pot itself, so the pot cannot deform, and it cannot slowly tip forwards or backward. The 'RING' is split in two, and the two halves come together from the sides, to form one ring.

    • @tonwar90
      @tonwar90 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not a bad design. These pots will become warped over time, from prolonged use. It's an inevitable consequence of dealing with materials of high temperatures. What was the actual reason for this accident was the operator overconfident, and thus not following procedure. This pot is clearly overfilled. He should let the pot sit for around 2 hours to form a upper hardened crust, so the molten slag does not pour out when he decides to move the pot.

    No, it's not a "modern" solution, but what's the alternative? Putting air in your cars' tires isn't a modern solution either. Slag is reused for roadway construction and it has to be allowed to cool down before it can be used for anything. it gets dumped on land that nobody would want to live on due to the proximity to blast furnaces and their noise and pollution. But the world needs steel and slag is a necessary byproduct. If you want steel, you're gonna get slag. I don't believe anyone thinks it's a major pollutant or a pollutant of any kind.

    • @alanpecherer5705

      @@SteelChannel1 A Slag Pot Carrier is nothing more than a wheeled loader that carries the same slag to the same pit and dumps it down the same slope into the same hole. It's just a rubber-tired truck instead of a steel-wheeled train. It uses the same diesel as the train. Whatever the difference between them may be is negligible. I could even argue that the Slag pot truck uses more evil diesel fuel because it's basically a one-load-at-a-time type deal, while the train can pull many cars from the base of the blast furnace to the dump, each of those cars having 4-10x the capacity of the truck loader. And I would add, the Slag Pot carrier is a single use device; its only function is to load and carry the hot slag to the dump site, load-by-load. Assuming a steel mill has train rails running through it, a little train running around a steel mill could conceivably carry finished steel billets (huge slabs) product to a external rail terminal and/or from a slab mill to a rolling mill, within the footprint of a mill. Most steel mills have rails running through them. If they don't and such a mini rail network would have to be constructed from scratch, then maybe the wheeled loader would make more sense. But I think you could look at any steel mill in the world and you'd find that rail network within the footprint of the mill. Even if you look at Steel Dynamics or Nucor, the most recently constructed mills in the US, they have rail lines running across their plant.

      @@SteelChannel1Look, the whole process of making steel in a blast furnace absolutely commands rail connectivity to the site. Kilotons of coal, limestone, and iron ore must be brought in. That is rail, nothing but. Those materials also have to be stockpiled in enormous piles because the furnace cannot be allowed to run out of its various feedstocks. Most blast furnaces run continuously for YEARS and shutting them down is not flicking a switch, it is more like a religious experience. So they always need a month's worth of coal and ore & limestone. So they have to have enormous piles of this stuff and it is not going to happen in a suburban subdivision. The whole operation has to be sited in a remote area with lots of land around. Then, those mat'ls have to be moved around the site. There is simply no way a blast furnace does not have rail lines running up to it and through it. Also, rail is not especially expensive to put in. It's gonna last 60+ years without much maintenance, while the roads your slag cars run on require maintenance far more frequently. But it's not even a consideration, the furnace has to have rail, there is no other way. Nobody has to think about this, is what I am saying. If you are running a sandwich shop, you cannot have just enough bread and cold cuts to operate to 11:30 on any day, you have to build up & manage materials in excess of your immediate needs. You can't think about it. But more specifically, if you think blast furnaces are egregious, horrible polluters (and they are and that is why I love them) then focusing on the slag pot cars vs slag trains is worrying about the last 1% of the issue. The pollution comes from the coking process which generates astronomical amounts of ammonia, sulfur dioxide and trioxide, benzene and toluene and all manner of hydrocarbons. But all of those chemicals have been recognized as valuable byproducts and have been scavenged from the coke ovens for 60 years, at least. To worry about the diesel pollution from the slag pot car vs the little train is silly. To worry about the limestone slag being dumped back onto the ground where it came from in the first place is...worry-wart stuff. It ain't worth it.

    why does it happen? any other materials added into the slag pot?

    • @SteelChannel1
      @SteelChannel1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As you can see, unfortunately, without coordination, after the slag fills in the pot, the vehicle moves away, and the output under the furnace opens again, and the slag is released again without attention to whether there is a pot underneath or not. It seems likely that the explosion was caused by the presence of water, which is normally used for cooling the tires and the surrounding environment, and was there.

      @@SteelChannel1 Two things: 1st there really must have been something combustible (entrapped, compressed, gases? Carbonates?) where there should be only liquid inert slag. Something was wrong in the furnace. It doesn't look like the ladle was wrong. The second is this modern "Green" topic/fashionable discussions of making Steel with hydrogen, instead of good old coke! That could cause unexpected explosions; hydrogen is very "leaky", too. Then the iron made with hydrogen could be of very brittle quality! Once the hydrogen is in the steel, You don't get it out, completely. I wouldn't trust to build bridges with that kind of steel!

      @@konradcomrade4845 Thank you for your explanations; I think they are very reasonable.

      @@konradcomrade4845 you are right....It's possible that unexpected combustible materials or conditions in the furnace could lead to issues. Proper control and monitoring of the steelmaking process are crucial to avoid such problems. However, without specific details about the incident you're referring to, it's challenging to provide a precise analysis. Hydrogen in Steel Production: The use of hydrogen in steel production is indeed a topic of interest and is part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the industry. The traditional method of using coke in blast furnaces releases carbon dioxide. Using hydrogen as a reducing agent instead of coke is seen as a more environmentally friendly alternative. However, the transition to hydrogen in steelmaking must be carefully managed to address potential challenges. Hydrogen is known for its flammability and, as you mentioned, its ability to permeate metals, potentially affecting the properties of the steel. Engineers and researchers are working on developing methods to control these issues and ensure the quality and safety of hydrogen-based steel. Brittleness of Hydrogen-Infused Steel: The brittleness concern you raised is valid. Hydrogen can cause embrittlement in certain materials, and this is a significant challenge to be addressed in the development of hydrogen-based steelmaking processes. Researchers are exploring methods to mitigate hydrogen-induced brittleness to ensure that the resulting steel meets the necessary structural and safety standards. Trust in Hydrogen-Infused Steel for Critical Structures: The trustworthiness of hydrogen-infused steel for critical structures like bridges is a matter of ongoing research and development. Engineers and scientists are working to understand the behavior of such steel under different conditions and to develop techniques to ensure its reliability.
