As Northey St City Farm in Brisbane celebrates it's 30th anniversary, staff, volunteers and members reflect on how they came to get involved in the farm, and why they keep coming back.
Gavin Hardy is our coordinator for the Permaculture Design course as well as our general adult education workshops.
Gavin has over 30 years of experience in urban permaculture and ecosystem repair, particularly in the subtropics. Gav learnt permaculture with the cofounder, Bill Mollison in 1997, whilst working with Morag Gamble to develop Northey Street City Farm and other projects in Brisbane. He currently teaches for permaculture co-founder David Holmgren and on Morag's online courses. Gav's home, Ecoflat Brisbane, is featured as a leading example of urban permaculture on David's RetroSuburbia website. He is passionate about community food projects and recently presented papers at the 15th International Permaculture Convergence in Taiwan, the 2nd International Food Forest Symposium in the UK and the Urban Agriculture Forum in Sydney. In 2022 he travelled the world on a Churchill Fellowship researching community food forests and orchards in Seattle, Miami, London, Rotterdam and in Italy and Canada. At this time, he studied with Martin Crawford at the Agroforestry Research Trust in the UK, returning to Australia to more study on social permaculture and group work with Robin Clayfield at Crystal Waters Ecovillage. Gav is also a multi award-winning landscape architect and has received a Lord Mayor's award, and State and National awards on community projects. He is also a qualified engineer and consults and coordinates projects in the community food space. Gav loves helping people from all walks of life to practice Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares.
