    Why can't people not understand that it is not about the quality of the photo that is important. Sure our phones can shoot amazing photos, but what he is trying to convey is that the experience of using a dedicated digital camera is just different. If a digital camera can inspire you to explore and shoot more photos is that not a valid thing to feel, we are not the same some of us just needs a push/help and if that camera is what you need, let them be. Sorrymasen for all my rant, it just really triggers me when people dismiss other's feelings. 👁️👄👁️

    Wouldn't it just be easier to just take your smartphone along with your Fuji x100f instead of those old point & shoot cameras? For me, the "camera that I always have on me" is just my iPhone 13 Pro Max. That smartphone camera can handle most situations easily when I don't have my Canon 5DmkIV or my M6 on me.

    • @ben_jamina
      @ben_jamina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I 100% agree with your perspective. And I do take my phone with me pretty much everywhere. However the phone is a phone. We use our phones so much already. While the photos are high quality, they do have a very specific look. It's so easy to distinguish photos taken from a phone these days despite their quality. Holding and using a camera to me brings a different value than using my phone. It's also so easy to have my phone and then next thing you know, you're in nature and on IG or Tiktok. I cannot check my texts, social media or anything while using a camera and the look and feel my Fuji produces as well as the older digicams produce is something the iPhone or any smartphone can't replicate. It's kinda like why read a book when you can read it on a screen that fits in your pocket? There's something about holding a book in its physical form that no phone or tablet can replicate. Sure they're useful tools but sometimes I just want to be dethatched from phones and some tech and connect with my area and photos that my phone doesn't allow. I do find myself using my phone a lot for quick easy photos, but when I go out to enjoy photography and capturing moments, I tend to use my cameras if possible. I also get wayyy more excited to take photos on a camera then running around using my phone. It electrifies my brain and makes me think more about what I want to take then simply taking out my phone and tapping a virtual button to take 40 photos from the same angle. Hope this helps explain my perspective! There is nothing "wrong" about using a phone and if that's all you got, then more power to you. But I would highly recommend getting for "funsies" camera to just test it out!

    • @PlatypusAurelius
      @PlatypusAurelius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ben_jamina thanks for that thoughtful reply and I agree with you. I also try to be a digital minimalist. But your point about the experience of photography is valid. Even though I have three Kindles, I still buy hardcover physical books and read them, so I understand where you are coming from.

    Hi! Question, have you edited in any way the images you've shown from the NV3? Or are they straight from the camera? :-)

    • @ben_jamina
      @ben_jamina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I generally edit them just a bit. Some of my friends like them SooC, but I like to accentuate the "digitalness" in them. Generally I'll boost the saturation and contrast to highlight the digital grain and/or the digital lines within the image. But Nothing too crazy because the images on the NV3 cant be pushed too much before it does start to look bad haha. I'm planning on doing some more videos focusing more specifically with the individual digi-cams I own, so stay tuned!

      @@ben_jamina also! your images taken with x100f from 4:30 have such a beautiful 'film' quality and grain to them. Do you use any particular preset? or film simulation recipe?

    • @ben_jamina
      @ben_jamina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stmn7286 I have a few custom presets saved in my 100f that I took from Fujixweekly but tbh I haven't found one that I absolutely love to just shoot in JPG. If I owned the x100v or xpro3 I think I would use the film emulations more because they have the newer sensor and a few more detail settings for the recipes. I really love to edit my photos so I mainly shoot RAW when using my x100f. I got the VSCO Lightroom presets like way back in 2013/2014 and I still use them! I don't even know if they still sell them? but I bet you could find them online somewhere if you look hard enough. Huge fan of them and I have like 300+ presets from the pack I have that are mostly film emulation presets. There's probably only like 10-15 presets that I really use and I just fluctuate between as a base, before I go in and dial in the edit to something I like. LightRoom has some pretty good grain effects and I just use that if I'm batch editing a lot of photos. Photoshop can also produce some good grain if you know what you're doing, but that is a lot more editing time and I generally only do that for one specific image IF I really want to do that. 98% of the time I just use the grain sliders in LR. Hope that is helpful!

  • @billr6983

    I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W830. Tiny and slim and slips into just about any pocket with ease. 20megapixel sensor and 8X zoom, can take some pretty darn nice photos in good light. 720p video is reasonably clean and the image is optically stabilized so not a bad little video cam either. Also have a Canon Powershot SD850IS, takes decent photos but the video is not great. Also have a Nikon 1J1 with a pancake 10mm (27mm equiv, Also have an 18.5mm 50mm equiv.) Now that's a nice little camera and I can fit into a jacket pocket or cargo pocket easily and takes great photos and 1080p video.

    I have a couple of Powershots, including the orange model shown in your video. Got it for $7 at a garage sale. The still images are just fine for my purposes. The SD video is meh, but will do in a pinch. My other Powershot is the dinky 780, which I like even more. I have an older iPhone, but just prefer the feel of a real camera for impromptu shooting.

    @boldcautionproductions9203 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great share. Amazing after all the tech development with large sensor cameras and perfect lenses, the basic act of being there, showing up, capturing the moment far exceeds the technical perfection. The other layer of that idea that you bring is that using an actual camera vs your phone camera makes a different statement about the same thing - you are intentionally taking the pic, not just hamming a selfie. People dismiss the cell phone, I think.

    • @ben_jamina
      @ben_jamina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this was wonderfully said and I agree. Whatever ~the camera~ is for you ultimately doesn't matter as long as it brings your the joy of doing the act and for me that is a smaller hand held camera over the phone, but to others it might be the phone. Whatever floats your boat.

      Which ones? The digi cams or the Fujifilm? The Fuji x100f and x100v are hard to get without paying a significant markup at the moment. A lot of people want them and I think there is a chip shortage/supply chain issues (still). Digi cams are pretty easy to find. Maybe not the exact ones but you can find similar cameras with less than 10mp all over Facebook market place

  • @jbstravels1741

    Amen to that brother! I own some good kit like the Sony A7 III, Panasonic GH5, G9 and 5D Classic but I really get a lot of joy from my older smaller shooters such as the Canon G9X, Panasonic GM1 which I picked up for a stupidly good price of $40 AUD and my trusty Panasonic GX85. I agree with you when you drop those hindering thoughts like worrying about the size, weight and especially costs. You'll have a weight lifted from your shoulders and just shoot naturally without a great deal of thought.

    iphone 14 is better than those small powershoots

    • @ben_jamina
      @ben_jamina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t make this video to compare what camera is “better.” I was just making some points I have been thinking about how smaller cameras, regardless of their quality, give you the opportunity to take more pictures and think about taking a picture more than thinking about your gear. Yes, the old digicams take objectively bad photos but that’s the point. The image it takes is a very specific look and feel that an iPhone 14 can’t reproduce. For me, it’s very nostalgic and that’s why I like to use it. Using your logic, anything “old” is worse than something new. A painting made before the invention of cameras must be bad compared to an artist taking a portrait on the phone or camera. Different mediums and tools exist to make people feel differently and convey certain emotions and that’s the art of it.

    I'd be happy with a compact camera that has a quality 23 or 24mm pancake lens and an APS-C sensor that shoots RAW and JPEG. Something I can stick in a coat pocket (or leave in a coat pocket) and take with me everywhere I go and only take my more serious camera kit out for planned shoots. I own a Sony a6600, but the compact 16-50 or 20mm lenses that are available for the camera are old designs dating back to the days of Sony's early NEX-series cameras. Neither lens is a very good performer. One reason for that is that the NEX-series cameras they were intended for had maximum resolutions of 14 and 16MP, until the arrival of the NEX-7 in 2011 with 24MP, and so the lenses were engineered to deliver maximum resolutions of about 16MP. So far, Sony have not seen fit to update or replace these lenses. I guess they'd rather have you buy their much bulkier and more expensive G and G Master series lenses. Or buy one of their expensive RX-100 series cameras, which, while nice, offer lower resolutions and less capable lenses.
