Replacing stock tube of Telefunken ELA M 251E
Replacing the stock tube GE 6072 JAN of a Telefunken ELA M 251E with a vintage GE 5 star 3 Mica 7072A. I was so excited to do this and the result did not dissapoint!

Vintage AKG C12 on a Manley Voxbox - Need your EQ tips

So I just plugged in the C12 on a Manley Voxbox and what you hear is just the way it came in with no post adjustments other than reverb. Tell me your thoughts specifically on the EQ section. How would you change the settings shown on the video if any? Tips/Feedback welcome.

Got this pretty cool gadget called a theoryboard. It's a very smart midi controller basically that allows you to select a key/scale and provides you with a color coded keys to play chords and notes within that scale. I'm not a 47 fan but it definitely had all the vibe and mojo I would have wanted for a record like this. This video got me interested in 47s' now!
I always come back! Fav is 251 ! Alma’s voice helps too lol :) she’s got the Rolls Royce of voices! Gold in her throat 🤩 put an iPhone or even an old Skype phone in a hotpress & she’d would sound better than most! One in a million - my favourite voice 💫

@@NIETZSCHE1l2 between the mic and mic pre, it is to some level for sure. I always tame the highs in post depending on voice.
@@orangeroom5414 How long does the elam tube last? My lung is hindering me. I'm thinking of buying an elam.
@@NIETZSCHE1l2 I use mine regularly and it's been years. You have many choices of tubes. I always have a spare from when the time comes. I even made a video on how to replace it. It only takes a minute.
It's the Telefunken without any doubt whatsoever and Telefunken has just reissued it using the original design! It's 12 grand but it's a lifetime mic and well worth the investment!
@@MatthewBarelick I agree that it's aufetime investment. It is a workhorse in my mic locker and has equally captured priceless recordings that are now forever preserved.
All of them were beautiful. For me it's the 67, I cant explain why, just prefectly tuned.
@@sanc85 that's why I keep it around. I just let the artist do a mini shootout before a recording to see which one inspires them out of the box.

The C12 is the clear winner for her voice.
My all time favorite and workhorse.
She’s such a good singer, she would sound amazing on anything!
Interesting isn’t it. The 47 just slots so well in a mix and you can see why. That mid range honk just great. The Elam251 sounds mix ready though. Great sound.
The 47 might be out of spec at this point. I forget the component responsible but as the mics age they can get bright, and this 47 sounds a little too bright. The 67 sounded nice as they usually do. The 251 reissue was not very good. The high end is just not very pleasant on the Tele USA versions. A real 251 has a very full and balanced sound and this did not sound as full as it should. The C12 sounded like magic.

I like the U47 best. The emotion transfers better and there seems to be more space around the vocal.
The Telefunken is larger than life! Is there noise reduction done here, and not on the Ribbon video? It's interesting, the Ribbon seems to have more detail/high end than most of the condensers, but it seems like the processing might have been a bit different? What did you think of the Ribbon?
I don’t use the ribbon on Vocals after a few tests. However, I use it on acoustic instruments a lot now.

@@orangeroom5414 the prettiest thing about it is that everything is bypassable , so you can use its pure signal with any flavor of compression/eq you like (kinda DW fearn pre)

Wow I can only only imagine how great this with let’s say an mpc live 2 and modules. I’ve been searching online this equipment as I have been thinking of purchasing a used one but I’m pulling the trigger

@@orangeroom5414 yes it seems like a video game when you put cheat codes lol so in this case playing chords will make it easier in general for someone like myself who does not know chords

U47 again. So smooth and rich. Fits just perfect for her voice. The ELA M251 is also great, sounds abit more upfront/modern.
I was wondering what version of a 6072a tube they were using, thanks so much for the intel. Now I’m gonna try & source a GE 5 star tube for my 251!
How would you compare the Voxbox and the Retro strip above?

Nah bro.. this video was to short and sweet .. i need more .. i have had mine sat there and as of today got a email with theand not got into it fully as ive been having soundcard issues,but antelope audio are doing my warranty return finally so once thats back and uo and running i will start cutting into the raven more . I had a update for cubase 13 today infact for the raven and ive installed and set that up ready .. please do another video going a lil more into the batch commands as this is the main reason i brought it..
I am glad you didn't ask which one is better but demonstrating the sound of each mic. It is impossible to pick which one is the best when you are presented with 4 of the best mics ever built. Great demo with the right context of vocal with the music instead of just acapella like most other videos. Enjoyed it very much!

It was a separate stand. I have since moved the keyboard to the left side and not under the desk.

Hey hey, nice treat thank you That U47 made for a thick intoxicating butter-marinated, ideal "smooth big vintage" sound. - U67 was the closest to a transparent, neutral mic in this one. Sounds very good, sure - but given the selection it wasn't the right match for her and this song. - 251 sounding comparatively small if still very 'pro' although with a Celine/Disney 1990s vibe. To me both this and C12 are too hyper in the air region. - Many may prefer the C12 here - it's big with lots of sweet air-y detail. To me it sounds kind of rude, or forced - like it's put your ear less than an inch from her mouth, if not halfway down the throat. Too clicky, too fetish-y or "manipulative" of an attitude to bring when listening to a singer, imho.... _give the damn diva some goddamned room to breath, dammit! This is music, not porn (uh, right?)..._ lol Thanks again, cheers! 🍻

The U47 had a kind of 'human' quality to the sound, and the 251 had fantastic detail and tonal balance. I preferred these two to the others, although they were all amazing. Love the singer too.
add an La2a to any Mic, it will go in this direction of "human" quality in style of the u47 vintage sound.

The U47 sounds abdsolutely awesome - followed by the U67
The 251 had much more breath and openness, but it was a toss up between the 47 & the C12 for this particular application for my taste.
I love to be nitpicky, but honestly, I'd be happy with either of the 4 mics. And especially with a singer like that! Great capture and production. Just wow. 🙂 How much would you say the sound is also due to the Retro Instruments Powerstrip?
I’m sure it has a lot to do with it but then I also have a Manley Voxbox that I’m blown away as my mic pre.
@@orangeroom5414 I'm going to sound stupid, but on my Apollo X8P, the "manley" preamp simulation sounds amazing. I'm really tempted by the Manley Force (4 preamps). And thanks for your kind answer.
U47 and 251 for sure are the winners. 251 the brightest without being brittle. The C12 felt a little harsh and thinner, but the u47 felt so full
