Faulty regulator/rectifier may be overcharging your battery. On EFI models, it could cause a high speed stalling problem.
Mercury Outboard Oil Injection Alarm

A video explaining the operation of the oil injection system, and what causes the alarm to sound
That's a beauty, one of the best engines produced by any manufacturer. Smooth, quiet, rugged, reliable and simple. OMC would still be in business today if these two exact engines could still be produced.
That's a beauty, so smooth and quiet.
Thanks for sharing these videos, especially in the winter months.
They are great trolling motors.
G'day AMS, that's nice slice of history and doesn't sound any different from the units made in the 70/80 period 👍.
Прошу помощи. меркури 175 efi 2 такта. при нагрузке не берет обороты более 2000 что это может быть?😢
I forgot to mention, be sure to look up your specific engine (by model number) when replacing the power head mounting gasket. Not all engines use the same gasket.
So my main tank was down to about 2 inches and I was hearing the beep looked at the tank by the cowling and that’s 3/4 full. It continues to beep at me even though the reservoir is 3/4 full and I have now 5 inches in the big tank. What do you thinks going on? I tried unscrewing that cap, but the oil doesn’t rise. It stays at the same level.
Why not just fill the reservoir up also instead of waiting for it to fill up with the engine running? Just leave the cap loose and let air bled off as the engine is running? Thanks
I wish i nee more about how to run mine. To raise rom from idle like you mentioned you can adjust timing or throttle, how much is to much timing and how lean is to lean. Seems complicated when changing speeds often
Nice video...I have 95 mercury 150 XR6 Black Max, runs great. Oil always full and purged. I can run all day, no problem til I stop to fish, even hours. I'll prime my fuel line and get that same warning tone intermittently. Some days it won't, others it will. I'm always checking everything and it uses oil, has great oil pressure..I just don't what it causing the alarm. I can play with the trim and the key and I get the alarm to "go normal" with my 3 quick beeps. I don't run it when the alarm stays a solid tone. Any tips?
I want to know if a mercury 150hp optimax 2 stroke could work with mix gaz
Great video, I wish I'd known a month ago when I was in the middle of Fredrick sound an hour away from Petersburg Alaska. I had some sludge on my pickup screen and my 2004 Optimax was new to me. After I limped back to town and did some Utube investigations I cleaned and fixed the warning tones. The Motor is very powerful pushes my skiff 35mph, cruise at 30. Thanks
I have a 37 KA37 runs really well just cleaned the points and off to the races
Great video! I have a question. I had the beep come on and off. Always had oil. Never ran out. Yesterday we were going 20mph amd it automatically brought the motor to 2 mph. We checked everything. That tank on the actual motor was probably close to 7/8 full. From your video sounds like it should be 100% full. Would that cause such a problem it would shut down. I was able to put back at 4 mph hour. Seem to run fine. But cause of the alarm. It would go any faster. Do you think there may be a different issue. Maybe electronic, or maybe that tank needs to be 100% full?
Hes not answering questions jut a blow off
Basically bleed the air out? Air locked.
Great advice. Thanks
Hola como estas, tengo una pregunta, me pasa eso del pitido o alarma de silbato, un mariner 115 hp 2 Stroke, me quede sin aceite por un segundo, y no para el silbato. Que puedo hacer.
You sound just like Jimmy Stewart
You don't recommend the Sea Foam, but how about the Mercury Quickleen for use in an Optimax?
Great video and I was aware of all that you explained because I ran low oil once before. I have been grasping at straws with trying to correct a 4 beep low oil alarm and think I may have an oil sensor out on the Calin reservoir after I realized that I have good oil flow to allcomponents. Mercury and dealers try to make you change the whole tank that the sensor is not sold separate. Not true, I found the exact sensor for the tank just ordered it for 20 bucks when they wanted 350 for the whole thing. They pulled the same crap on a leaky oil pump, when I fixed it with a 15 cent oring. I have a 250 proxs and hope that I am on the right track with changing the sensor. Any response of where I am at with this issue?
thanx for the info bt I loosened that black cap on the reserve tank bt it's not filling what could be the problems and the oil alarm is not coming off
I’ve got a 2006 200 optimax getting 4 beeps it has new oil sensor on it sometimes it beeps when we are out sometimes it doesn’t driving me crazy anything you could tell me to check
Can you read me a bedtime story?
Thank you!
Thanks for all of the great info. The problem I am having is the reserve tank always remains full of oil and I have had my boat for about two years and I have only filled the 3 gallon oil tank once and the level is going down way too slow.
I bypassed my oil injection system n run 50:1 premix in my tank...never a problem
On a optimax dfi?
your video helped me a lot, that cannister was sitting upright , this guy set it upright, and the oil was exhausted and didn't know how it would be refilled till this video.. Thank you, the cannister was on it's side, not like you had it in the video, but upright, crazy
I am getting 6 alarms beeps after a minute of running. Only happens when I start the engine. Manual says maybe water in filter. I changed the fuel filter in the engine but still get 6 sounds about a minute after I start it. Can it still be an oil problem? I have a 2017. 250 Optimax
I have no clue what the beeps are for but my guess is that it could be just a battery warning beep that it's not charging but as long as you see your oil level keep slowly going down you should be good and as for water in your fuel, as long as the engine runs good you shouldn't have a clogged filter and clean carbs.
I have a 1988 Mariner Mag II outboard. How would you go about testing the oil low sensor and the low sensor buzzer itself? When I turn the key on I do not get the normal beep most boats have. The key is located in the shifter box. I have 2 wires coming out of the cap on the emergency oil reservoir. I just want to be able to test everything and make sure it is working correctly
You could take the sensor and float out and while the engines running you can Keep the float raised and then lower the float all the way and see if you get an alarm.
My 250 Mercury every time I turn the switch on it beats five times and then it'll go off what's the problem
Question. I have a 1985 Mercury XR2 and the alarm came on today (constant alarm, not intermittent) and I know the thermostats are working and water pump is newer, too, and spitting a steady stream out the back. I am getting a small leak in the oil reservoir cap that has the air/oil prongs that goes to the engine. My question is will that cap connector having a small leak cause that alarm to sound? I just gotta believe it is not overheating since the thermostat is fine and the water pump working. Thanks for any help.
Yes any leak on the on board oil tank will cause a loss of pressure and not fill your tank on the motor correctly which will in turn cause a lack of oiling of the motor and a possible alarm, I would a skilled mechanic in your area look at it and not run until you get it fixed as powerhead failure may occur
Is there a video showing oiler delete on a 1996 mercury 150
Good video though the big oil tank is pressurized by a hose coming from crankcase pressure.so the air pressure is pushing the oil from remote tank to reservoir so the oil circuit is always under pressure and when no pressure , the ouling system will fail. Thank you I like you texan accent
Will that cause it to shut off
No, there is nothing in the engine warning system that will totally shut off the motor.
Are those Vintage style sparkplug wires ?
yes they are
Little bit of common sense or research goes along way. Amazing how people just run theses expensive motors without the slightest idea of how they work. Pickup a shop manual, learn the basics.
Awesome info thank you
Excellent video. Got a 95, 175efi and just had the lower rectifier go out. I was looking for videos that showed how to install a rectifier on that motor when i found this video. Even though it didn't contain what i was after, that info about the wear on the stator was extremely valuable. I'll be checking mine tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!
THE OIL CODE IS 3 BEEP OR 4 BEEP
4 beeps every 30 seconds
Great video man. I'm having trouble from the 3 gallon tank not transferring to the resivor is it possible I have air in the 3 gallon or the resivor any info would be appreciated
I would just pop your oil lines off of the 3 gallon tank and reservoir and blow air through them to check for a clog. It is pretty rare but it's possible.
You didn't go into how you got the carb so clean. Did you soak in acetone and or use ultrasonic cleaner? Nice video. Cleaning and 18 HP 2 stroke Merc carb. I soaked body after disassembly in hot water and dawn dish detergent. It looked up some if the scaling I could see, old varnish. That wire set is that a hvac plumbers set? Appreciate some feedback. Motor is electric start so extra work to get carb out. Only want to do this job once and right. Jeff
Hi I'm adding a fuse to my 2002 mercury 75 2 stroke and was wondering if it blows does the engine cut out Or could it damage the stator. Thanks
Great advice
Well explained, thanks for pointing out the wee hole!
I do a little outboard and small engine repair myself and I agree with what you say about rebuilding carbs instead of using SeaFoam for a quick fix. I swear by seafoam myself but I use it to keep carbs clean after cleaning or rebuilding them and fuel systems clean from phase separation in ethanol blended fuels, especially during storage and it works way better than alot of so called marine fuel additives. I don't recommend anyone try to use it and expect a fast result either as it is designed to work slowly over time as far as keeping stuff clean. It is cheap insurance in my opinion given all the problems todays fuel causes, especially on small engines and outboards. I think alot of people are mislead by it as well as other products as you are correct, most of them are worthless gimmicks. It is alright to have different opinions though, glad I stumbled across your video sir, I enjoy watching people that are good at what they do. Great video sir.
So I am curious that I only get the 4 beeps at idle, it goes away with any throttle at all, is that this or something else?
I have a 2011 115 Mercury optimax I get the single all clear beep when I turn the key to on but I also get a single beep during cranking to start up. It starts fine it idle's fine it runs fine no other issues just a single beep during the cranking process of starting what is this beep for? I have asked my local shop and they couldn't help.
I have the same issue on 2018 optimax pro xs 150. It has about 8 hours on it. It does that extra beep but only occasionally. Same as you, idles and runs fine. All oil is up and pumping fine. Dealer told me battery maybe be weak but it is new and always charged...???
Great info..thank you. Question..can the 1990 Merc 200 hp fuel pump handle a fuel filter if it has 3/8 inch fuel line?
Yes, but the original has 5/16 barbs on each end. If it's an EFI engine, you already have a screw on water seperator/fuel filter from the factory.
What if the beep is steady without starting? I unplugged the wires that came from oil tank and it stopped bepping. Bad float in tank maybe?
