Singer 101 Gear Spring Fabrication (and Singer Handwheel Gear Springs in General...)
I explore the springs that exist in the handwheels of Singer machines that have direct gear drive motors: their purpose, importance, and sources of replacement.
These springs take the brunt of the motor’s impulse and communicate it to the arm shaft via the handwheel. It’s fascinating to me to contemplate how much work they do - reducing wear on the gears, and transmitting the power of the motor on through to the needle, to do the work of sewing.
I was lucky to find just the right tools and materials to replicate the gear spring of the Singer 101, which is sometimes found broken in unrestored models. It’s my pleasure to share that now, no one who loves these machines like I do will have to cannibalize another machine for this part, and can readily obtain them from me.
If you have a Singer 101 and are in need of a new gear spring, feel free to contact me at:

Singer 27 "Pheasant" vibrating shuttle (made 1900) forming a lock stitch in slow motion

My 123-year-old newly-conserved Singer sewing for the first time in who knows how long. You can see how the "double-bounce" at the bottom of the needle stroke produces a loop of blue thread that the shuttle point picks up on its way forward, interlocking it with the gold bobbin thread. How do I get a stuck on tension dial free from the collar its on? I took off the set screw but the dial seems glued onto it. The only way I was able to remove the whole assembly was going thru the open face plate and taking out the longer set screw to remove the whole assembly. Help! Thank you for the info too!

Yeah this is a pretty common problem. AndyTube has some insights here: th-cam.com/video/woJraVBSWcI/w-d-xo.html He also shows you how to zero out the unit without removing that piece, because the problem is so common. But I purchased a "junk" unit and took the threaded stud and wound it into the adapter until it stuck out the front, and then set it up so the whole thing was resting on a vice, so I could pound the protruding stud down and dislodge the adapter. (this was after a lot of application of penetrating oil like PBlaster or Kroil and waiting several days, also heating with a hair dryer)

I used your video yesterday to replace the bearing on my PA motor, your video was a great help. To get past your problem of not being able to drive out the shaft with the pipe clamp "vise", I used a hole saw (it was a llittle over one inch) to drill a hole in a block of wood. The block of wood was slightly larger than the aluminum base of the motor housing and the hole was slightly larger than the commutor assembly. So you just put the base against the block of wood with the commutator part in the hole and drive the pin out. I used a woodworking vise instead of the pipe clamp but it's basically the same thing.

I have very signifiant experience with the Singer #500 sewing machines. I learned to sew on one in 1962 and have owned several. There are many issues here.. This machine is "running rough", this could be the result of an inexperienced repair-person loosening a gear and re-seating it causing binding and lack of smoothness ( back in the day, Singer stipulated that the machines be returned to the factory for re-seating and regrinding ). I hear a loose bobbin case due to the need for proper adjustment. The motor is straining to start, due to an improperly lubricated machine and the upper motor bearing ( ball ) is dry and growling. A well cleaned and polished motor commutator will result in a "smooth running motor"... All the "speculations in the world" will not remedy these issues..

I really do not know if it made a difference. Perhaps it did stabilize the upper horizontal shaft. This is the only such revision in the # 500 machines. Now the # 600 machines had "revisions" every few months.. ( The very best #401 machines were made in 1956- overbuilt to the max . Bronze lower bearings, heavily chromed screws and more )..

@@sauces_official Yeppp, you're gonna make me feel like manufacturing that part next, haha! It's technically a short bolt with channels cut into it. I have been lucky to obtain as spare parts some earlier versions -- the ones for the 301 were made of metal! Those will never go bad. I do fault Singer for sliding to plastic even as early as the 400/500 series on that part. If you look, it has an "X" in it, two channels along which the throat plate adjusting lever could run, so I suppose if one wore down you could turn it a quarter turn and then have another channel to wear down some. That said, it would take a lot of use to wear even the plastic ones down. I don't think a coin would be thick enough to work, because unless you have those channels cut into the depth of it, there's nothing to hold it in place from unscrewing and turning back out. It's kind of a genius piece of engineering, adjustable and retained by the mechanism it supports. I'm certain it would be possible to find a substitute starting material and craft it. I suspect like most of them that they were designed in the US; there are some that may have been designed in the UK. But Singers in general were manufactured or assembled in so many other places as well including the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany...

Oh my goodness thank you for this video I have a singer 500 a Rocketeer and perfect condition beautiful machine everything is perfect but my tensions wacky I’ve had it for about two years never been able to get it right and a riddle to use it watching your video I’m missing the adapter and the dial that little piece that goes inside the brown piece I miss both of those they’re just not on the machine I have the gold up over one around one with the plus minus I’m not missing it man now I know why the older singers I have don’t have that cap so I didn’t even notice it was missing. Thank you so much next question do you by chance know where I could buy the adapter in the dial?

I have a similar Rocketeer, mint condition, had very little use when I got it, but it ran bad, motor sounded off. I rebuilt the motor, put in a new bearing, with same results. When I swapped out the motor for another newly rebuilt one it ran like a Swiss clock! Original motor probably had a bent shaft from the factory and original owner didn’t use it much because of this problem. Thanks for all your wonderful videos!

Very nice. This is a great resource. I have my wife's great grandmother''s 1898 Singer 27 'Sphinx' in que for reconditioning (and a little cabinet repair.) Thank you!

I love all the comments about grandmas :) My grandma has a brown crinkle-finish Kenmore that she's made us pillowcases and aprons on :)

Nice. My mom had a Free-Westinghouse many years ago. If ebay was around then, it would still be working.
