I know I have always been pretty mixed on the trans thing. I believe many are trans because they don’t feel comfortable as being just a woman or a man in the norms they carry themselves with and that makes sense. Some seem to take it in a more radical and unsavory direction. I’ve met many half decent people who are trans however. At the end of the day, we as Christians are called to be loving and inclusive whether we agree with something or not.

I love being a member of the ELCA. we emphasize that God chose us and made us free in our baptisms so we can go forth in the world guided by the Lord to be good to others (though no one can be perfect)

I’ve noticed a key difference between the church I go to and most UCC churches like this one when it comes to sermons. I’m an ELCA Lutheran who likes learning about other traditions and right now, I’m down a UCC rabbit hole. ELCA sermons have a lot more focus on Gods Grace to us poor sinners or a personal relationship with God and emphasize our freedom we gain because Gods grace. Sermons in the UCC have more a focus on what we can do to be better people to others with biblical references mixed in to tie the whole message together. This seems to be a style that goes back a long way in the UCC, John Winthrops City on a Hill sermon. One thing that your reformed and my Lutheran tradition can agree on is that the Gospel frees us to be better people. Another difference I’ve noticed is UCC pastors are much more willing to dive into social issues where ELCA pastors much more walk a tightrope, even in somewhat progressive congregations because it’s still a very moderate denomination at its core. I have 4 pastors, 1 of them, a married lesbian woman. It would still be an unusual situation for it to be a focus of the service. I’m not criticizing either approach, just observing. Either way, God bless your congregation.

I’m in the ELCA where our polity is a mix of Episcopal and Congregational. This leads to a lot of conflict on how much authority the Bishop has or doesn’t have. For example, the Bishop has complete control of filtering who can be pastor in a given Synod but congregations have great autonomy on many subjects like sexuality and the Bishop has no authority over a congregation whether they’re fully inclusive or ”old fashioned”. So many conflicts arise from our confusing authority structure.
