Cutting into another Oak and getting some beautiful boards

Today I cut into the other section of Pin Oak from earlier this month and get 10 boards from it. Pumpkin Video: th-cam.com/video/ttx_Q27zFbY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GAe4SuH_I4f7oWp7 #Sawmill #PinOak #Sawdust

Cutting Up Some Cherry - Part 2
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
This is part 2 of the cherry tree. The measurements are only from one of the two branches I got, and still need to grab the trunk of the tree. So all in, I would have made more money from adding in the other branch and the roughly 4 foot tall trunk.

Part 1 of cutting up a cherry limb. I didn't get a clip of the final lumber dimensions, so that information will be in the Part 2 video, out soon. Thanks for understanding and enjoy the video! #Sawyer #Sawmill #CherryTree
Cutting Cherry on the Mill

Today we cut some cherry on the sawmill with some great color and figure to it. I did miss a few cuts, so it's a bit shorter, but still have some more cherry to cut, so stay tuned for more! #Sawmill #Cherry #Sawdust #RoughCut #RoughLumber
Cutting an Ash Log into Bench Pieces
มุมมอง 360ปีที่แล้ว
I am back on the mill with this 13" log, cutting some thicker pieces that would be great for a few benches. I'll keep you updated on the drying process and the finished product in a later video. #Sawmill #RoughLumber #AshLog
Cutting a log into a cant
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
I'm cutting this log into some 1x8s that will pair nicely with some recently cut branches from the same tree (see previous video). I've turned this into a cant, which is done by cutting the bark and round edges back to a square for further processing. Second part to come soon, where the boards will actually be cut to thickness.

      The cedar I cut last year was about 80 years old. Trees like that don't come along too often unless you're buying from a tree service. I wish I had 18-22 inch diameter logs to throw on there everytime, but don't have the bankroll to make it happen.

      @@HIVESawyer BAck in the day I used to rip small boards of things like apple and cherry on an 18" bandsaw. By the time they seasoned they were all warped. But if ya cut everything 2" thick you gotta wait 3 years. Those trunks and branches produced very little useable wood, but I just started making jewelry boxes. lol I'm in Northern VT now and I'm now surrounded by more free logs than I can even keep up with for firewood. I know of a couple of huge white pines that blew down last winter you'd just kill for. Good luck. Looks like a nice little saw.

    Looks very nice! Got any plans for the wood slabs after they dry out?

    • @HIVESawyer
      @HIVESawyer ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have plans for these boards yet, but have some plans for benches out of the 2" slabs I've cut out of some other logs. I have a couple entryway tables and tiered coffee and end tables I want to put together, which will also be videos on the channel in the future. I do imagine at some point selling lumber, since I can realistically get about a dozen boards from each good sized log and unless I'm doing sawing and woodworking full time, I can't use it all.

    That was a spectacular looking cherry log and as woodworking teacher I appreciate fine woods. If I may make a few suggestions? 1) pressing so much on the throttle could burn out your engine. 2) those loose cables should be tied up and out of the way. 3) you should trim off all the branch ends as close as possible to the trunk. 4) going back and forth during your cut can damage your blade. 5)Your sawdust problem could be due to the sawdust getting wet from the leaking lubrication line and causing a backup or a buildup of oily residue from milling softer woods. P.S. I did watch part 2 as well.

    • @HIVESawyer
      @HIVESawyer ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, I probably should have those cables pinned up. The instructions did not have that step, but that's not an excuse. I don't know what you mean about going back and forth. Are you saying up and down the log as it's cutting or the log moving side to side? The log should be secured well enough that it doesn't move, but I do have trouble securing it against the flaking bark. Yes, the sawdust will get buched up from time to time, but I most often find debris such as bark will block it up much faster than wet sawdust. The purpose of the container is necessary for blade lubrication, and the leak actually drips off hose well before it can make it to the log. If I didn't have that, it could easily stretch and warp the blade and cause uneven cutting across the log.

      Is that blade dull??

    • @HIVESawyer
      @HIVESawyer ปีที่แล้ว

      @user-hz3iu9bb5r I have taken two blades into the metal log supports, but other than those being replaced right away, these are factory sharpened blades. I have had the throttle cable work itself loose a couple times, so maybe not running at full power.

    Glad to see another video on the OS 23. Your videos encouraged me to finish my 9 month build logged in back space but were at the fine tuning stages and ready to saw some lumber when the kids go back to school! Your content is greatly appreciated!

    • @HIVESawyer
      @HIVESawyer ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you are headed in the same direction on making your own lumber. It has given me access to some wood I wouldn't have been able to purchase locally, as well as some more expensive species. The cherry is about $7 a board foot near me, and I have a black walnut that needs to come down at $15 a board foot. Both would be about a 90 minute trip or special order to get for woodworking.
