This wasn't what I wanted to see when I checked my tumblers this morning. Lets clean up this mess and get the prairie agates going again. I apologize for some of the filming, I was trying to get it cleaned up before everything dried.

Coquina Jasper, Is not really a jasper, if you look it up as Miriam stone, it has a MOS hardness of 3 - 4. One week in the first stage and it will reduce a lot. Good Luck.
Thank you for the information.
See ya next week ✌️
Thanks for watching! 👍
My ears!!!😭
I'm sorry. That was a result of how I had to record my videos this week. It shouldn't be an issue again.
Thanks for sharing your experiment! I'm about to try this myself; spent the afternoon being smashy. I think one of the reasons you got the results you did from the first batch was because some of the pieces were more curved, which meant they were perhaps scraping into the other shards more. (Just a guess!)
That's a good possibility. I'd love to hear how your experiment goes!
@@LizRocksAndStuff So far I've done one bowl (pretty hard ceramic that took a while to get worn to where I wanted it, almost 3 days?), a much softer mug with a nice relief pattern that I almost scoured away because I let it go too long, a very textured glass bowl that still has a little bit of gloss (may run some if the larger pieces some more, haven't decided), and I'm doing a ceramic vase I smashed now that had a crackle glaze -- I wasn't sure how that glaze would do in the tumbler, but it seems fine. All have been run with a combination of the material and grit plus stones, adding or removing rocks as needed to fill the barrel, adding more grit if I don't see the results I want after checking it after a few hours. :D I don't really know what I'm basing any of this on other than what I've picked up from others (like yourself) and educated guesswork. Other than the almost-ruined mug pieces, I'm having some pretty good successes. Thanks again for your insights!
@@w.a.whipple That sounds really cool. I have a highly textured glass bowl that I want to try next. It has a colored coating that I'm sure won't survive, but I'm curious how the texture will go.
Thank you so much! That’s exactly what I needed. And the waterpik is genius. I’m relieved to know that I don’t have to wait for perfection. Now I need to know when to go to stages 3 and 4, pretty please?
For stages 3 and 4 I only do a quick inspection looking for any rocks that have chipped or broken in the previous stage. It doesn't happen very often, but can ruin a batch if it does. So as long as everything still looks smooth and there are no sharp edges I just put them into Stage 2, 3, and 4 for 7 days each with a cleaning cycle in between.
I would love a video about how to tell if a rock is ready to move to the next stage. I have my first batch in 35 years tumbling now and I don’t know what I should be looking for at each stage.
I can do that! I won't be able to get it out until next week when my barrels are ready to be inspected. Until then, I do talk a little bit about it in Episode 41 if you want to check out that video.
Hello! Thank you for the fun video! I need to find some tree agate now because it turned out really pretty! I started tumbling rocks myself and I have probably a very beginner question, but I have some jasper that I'm trying to tumble as they are a great first time stone to tumble (or so I was led to believe :p) but they are chipping so much that I can't move them on to stage 2. Do you have any tips or ideas? You find so much conflicting information online that you kind of get lost as to what to try. Thanks in advance and have a great day!
Thank you for watching my video! I've tumbled a few kinds of jasper and I can't say I've had that issue. What tumbler are you using? I know a lot of beginners get the Nat Geo one. It's a decent tumbler to start out with, but it spins really fast, which could be contributing to your issue. Do you know what kind of jasper you have? Sometimes rocks are called jasper, but it's really something else (like dalmatian jasper which is actually much softer than jasper). For beginning tumblers I would recommend some of the harder rocks like quartz and agates. They take a bit longer in the initial stages, but they don't break as easy and shine up really nicely.
Hi! I have the lortone tumbler 3A. As for the jasper I got some polychrome jasper but I didnt know some things like dalmatian jasper arent actually jasper! Im wondering if I just missed some cracks when inspecting them and I guess the worst that happens if I move them on is they wont be shiny. I do have some clear quartz which I will definitely try next because I'm learning a ton and I fear I see more tumblers and rocks in my future. Thanks for the reply and advice!
Polychrome jasper can chip a bit. I tumbled some a while back. The red part is actually softer than the colored part and it commonly does not get as shiny. Good luck in your tumbling!
Thank you for uploading a video despite the busy week you had! I always look forward to these :D
Thank you for watching! I'm happy to hear that you look forward to my videos.
Just found your channel and have been tumbling rocks for years now. Guess what I just got-- Bahia's to tumble next, lol I hope I like them a little more than you did. I do like reds so I should like them. All your rocks looked amazing by the way😊
Thank you so much! They were really easy to tumble. I prefer more blues and greys, but I didn't dislike them. They just aren't my thing. I'm sure you'll like them, lots of really pretty reds.
Cool video. The thing to remember about mixed batches, are the hardness of the different rocks. Personally, I'm not a fan of mixed batches. I've been tumbling for over 40 years, and i use the ivory soap to burnish my stones after stage 4. It only takes 30 minutes to complete that cycle.
I usually try to match hardness, but it's not always easy to do. I think it's fun to just try something to see what happens, even if I don't think it will turn out well. I've been surprised before! I used to use Ivory soap between stages and at the end. I think I prefer it to borax.
I would love a basic tutorial about what types of rocks do and don’t tumble well and why. My nephew is getting interested in rocks and I’d like to take him out and collect rocks for his tumbler but I have no idea what to look for. I have an absurd amount of gneiss/granite in my yard but I have a feeling it wouldn’t work well.
That's a good idea! I mostly buy my rocks to tumble because there's mostly granite and quartz where I live. I can try to do some research and put out a video about they types of rocks to look for.
Hiya. Didn't see polished rocks much? Almost done?? Can't wait to see the finish. I tumble. Bout 6 lbs in pre. Polish This morning . Those are different than what I polish from local stuff..Wa st. Here. Roll on and hope to see you again.
There should be some polished rocks coming out in next week's video, bahia agates and one batch of obsidian. These videos are just weekly updates on what I'm doing to show the progress from rough to polished. What types of rocks do you find locally? There isn't much more than quartz and granite where I live, so not too exciting to tumble.
Lovely.
Thank you!
Where do you source your rocks? Are they mostly from the environment around you or more often bought as identified but untumbled rocks?
These were all purchased. Not all identified because I like to buy mixed batches a lot.
How do you recognize them in the wild? Without being cleaned and polished I would struggles with most of these
I don't. These were all purchased. In the wild I would probably only be able to identify quartz.
What would happen if you tumbled a desert rose?
It would almost certainly disintegrate.
Hey I'm so happy to have found your channel. I've been in this hobby for about 3 months and I have some tumblers too I love love rockhounding. Where do you live in the US? I agree with you facebook groups lots of information and advice but a lot of judgment and directives when I am a free bird haha
Welcome! I'm glad to have you here. I've been tumbling for almost a year now. I haven't had a chance to go rockhounding yet, as my area doesn't have any close places with cool rocks. I'm in Georgia, so we have mostly granite and quartz. Do you have a favorite rock to hunt for?
I currently live in Oregon pretty much everything I tumble is from what I found Jasper agates chert pet wood but we will be moving to Florida soon so rockhounding.. 😅😅😅 love your channel😊
At least Florida has decent beaches. I love jasper, it tumbles really well. I might dig up some quartz on my back yard and see what it looks like.
I'm going to rinse my stage 1 (some going on 4 weeks) and stage 2 barrels today. Looking forward to seeing what can be moved on. I've been tumbling for about 2 months, first batch out of stage 4 really needed to go back to stage 1 for a couple weeks, but hopefully some move on to stage 3 today! Love your videos! I hadn't thought of using an old wipe box for rock breaking. I will find one and try that out. I have a set of small chisels, I like your wider one better. Which tumbling channels do you currently watch?
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy them! All my batches have had rocks that could have spent more time in stage 1. I like the imperfections in some, but others have been sent back to the beginning. As long as you are having fun, that's all that matters! The only true tumbling channel I watch on YT is @moonriserocks. There's a few I watch on another app. I do have a few rock hounding channels I watch. Michigan Rocks sometimes does tumbling videos.
Great video.... black slurry was my favorite part.
Thank you! I like the black slurry as well. It's very cool.
