Tristan in Mexico City | intristang
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 มิ.ย. 2021
I'm Tristan, and I'm...in Mexico City. I retired in 2021 from a "career" in software sales to spend less time working and more time living.
Since then, I've "lived" and traveled through Mexico ('21: Puebla, Querétaro, San Miguel, Mexico City & Playa del Carmen), the Balkans and Central Europe ('22: Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Budapest, Prague & Vienna), and South East Asia ('23: Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam & Indonesia).
Earlier this year, we moved "back" to Mexico City. To be honest, I'm still trying to figure out what this channel's all about, but you are welcome to come along for the ride!

I tried the MICHELIN Star ⭐️ Taco Stand in Mexico City | Is it OVER HYPED?
On May 14, 2024, a tiny taco stand in the San Rafael colonia of CDMX was awarded a Michelin Star.
A few weeks leading up to this honor, I was able to try 3 of their 4 tacos. After many, many (many) friends sent me messages about Taqueria El Califa de Leon, I wanted to break my TH-cam hiatus to share my thoughts and feelings on their food--AND if it's worth all this hype.
If you're interested in my thoughts on the rest of Mexico's Michelin guide, stayed tune for that video which is coming soon!

Please let me know how does the Foehn waist fit for sizing? i feel like I am a 31, should I go with the 30 or the 32 inch waist in your opinion ? Thank you !
Don’t start a video with a close up Of your face…
The carrot things??? lol
Thanks for including the prices!
Absolutely fantastic Mariscos. I spent $70 on myself because everything was incredible.
Man, the whole video is so miserable as you just complain the entire time!
Oh, excellent video, I was searching for a video of the train journey from Prague to Dresden, sorry, where did you buy the train tickets?
I don't know, I like something that's comfortable on the plane, some thing that feels like jogging sweats.
This guy seems like a bit of a dick. No gracias.
It's always funny watching guest try and figure out how to eat their food. The avocado puree was put there to hold the toastada in place. Had to list it just incase of allergen.
Taco pig heaven muy bene! I have to go there!
Hey - great review. I’m probably a little late on this, but I’m interested in the Roark pants. Are they stretchy? Thanks
Have you tried Kuhl pants?
I love how simple the tacos look. Fresh tortillas, fresh meat, and a simple salsa. They look so much better than the cheese filled monstrosities that you're used to.
Gracias por tus comentarios aqui te dejo la liga de este y departamento y varios mas todos en el centro de Puebla
Michelin is desperate for street cred because fine dining is dying. Bourdain did this 20 years ago and its been like 5 years since Pete Wells made the move to review a taco trucks in Queens as a restaurant. Any kind of success can kill a restaurant (or any other venture) but I think that Michelin stars especially cause places to become more mediocre after they get them because seeking and retaining that external validation skews what the whole enterprise is oriented toward.
Agree with everything you said. How have you been dude? Also, how did/do you feel about Dune 2 (as a supreme Dune fan)?
9 hours to travel 300km, that sounds like Stone Age times.... both Croatia and Hungary are so damn backwards! That should be no longer than 2 hours , MAXIMUM! God bless speed trains in China. Beijing to Shanghai 1100 km in 4 hours by train!
Yes, quite insane. There was some work being done that greatly disrupted it (should be resolved now), but I agree! Most people don't understand how incredible the trains in China are. And, thanks to China, places like Indonesia are getting great HSR, too!
Thanks for the review! I will not be going to this place then cause the google reviews are also not great. Waiting for your other reviews!
I will make a top tacos video one of these days! The longer I am here, the more I realize it's all about the above-average tacos that aren't far away and don't have crazy queues 😅
How you gonna show up after a year and just be like “Sup?” lol glad you’re back! Missed your videos bud
Haha, fair point. It took the rage to come out of hiatus. Thank you!
I'd like to visit, but do the people working at the restaurants speak English? My super limited Spanish isn't going to get me very far lol.
English penetration here is very good for the most part. A lot of places will speak English to you even if you begin with Spanish. With that said, even a little Spanish goes a long way here! I don't think you'll have many problems
Yo! I just came back last week from a sick 4 day solo trip to Mexico City and it went better than I imagined, a big help from watching your videos. First thing I did when I landed was get some Los cocouyos for lunch that hit the spot. El Cardenal was an incredible place to get breakfast but by far my favorite place was Casa de Tono. The pozole and tostadas were 10/10 especially for that price. Glad to see you posting again
Happy to hear that! La casa de toño is honestly SO good. If you enjoyed it, try Fonda Margarita next time. I like it for very similar reasons (although it's a bit further south).
Damn this place looks dookie
🤣🤣🤣 video don't lie!
Tristan so happy you are back on TH-cam!!!
Thank you!! 🙏🏽
*Disclaimer* if you enjoyed eating here, you keep doing you 😌! This is just my (grouchy) opinion and experience at Taquería El Califa de Leon 😅 My reaction to the rest of Michelin's Mexico guide coming soon(ish)! 🔜
El Sirloin de la Roma is probably my top steak taco in CDMX at the moment
For $37 pesos, you can do a lot worse!
+1 to the salsa though review; it lacked flavor and heat for me
even in this (low quality) video, you can see how watery it is!!!
Lol I liked my bistek taco
🥺🥸
Woooow, I just finished watching and it was no holds barred, you went IN! Lol even the menu got the smoke 🤣 but I feel you. I hate when something is recommended and by the time you get to it the quality is not all it’s hyped to be. I think some restaurants get too comfy with the good reviews ans start to slack. There were many places like that in Oaxaca when I visited. Thanks for the review!
Part of me feels like I need to go back to try it again, but part of me is like "there were too many things wrong, and there's no way they're gonna fix them all"
@@intristangthat’s fair! You can’t expect too much change from a place that doesn’t seem to be getting bad reviews. Unless there’s a nice scandal lol. good luck next time if you do try!
Haaaaa! I was not expecting you to say it was bad 😂 dang now I def gotta stick around to see what had happenedddd
I'm glad I didn't give it away in my title then! :)
what beach and how much were chairs n umbrella?
the main one near calle 5, and we brought out own umbrellas so not sure what things cost
Love Eno, it's down the street from my place
I actually haven't been back since this video 😅 what do you think about Eno vs Lalo? Or what are your favorite breakfast/bunch spots in the city?
Thanks
Thanks for watching!

Además de tragar, ¿que otra cosa hacen los "turistas" (nacionales y extranjeros) en las tres únicas colonias de cmdx que al parecer solo esas "existen"?
when people go to ny they're first time, I doubt they're going to Queens. Obviously there are other colonias, but people are going to focus on the main ones
@@intristang yes, i know, really my comments are not for you, I am sorry with you 🙏 Is the mexican people from México city who (for me) are solo fool people that just put in the top three Places AND forget to take care about all the al huge city.
Great video
Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏🏽
Taaaacos 🙄
Tacooos 🌮 aré un every place, not just int that boring área.
been binge watching your mexico videos the past few days. Finalized im going to mexico city in 2 weeks lol
love that! what's top of your list to do/eat when you get here!?
you kept talking about Pujol the whole video but didn't eat there, smh
ah, jeez th-cam.com/video/-zoTPYKUeI0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for sharing the travel information in the video. I am from Taiwan and will go to Prague in mid-April. I also plan to take a ride from Prague to Dresden for some sightseeing.
Thank you for watching. I think you will have a great time in Prague and Dresden! Weather should be great at that time.
@@intristangHi Sir, I would like to ask how early you will buy the train tickets by internet?
@@ronaldoliao i'd suggest buying about 5-7 days in advance as it will save you money. You can book as late as the day of, but there will be limited availability and the price will be higher
@@intristang Thank you for the information.
Yuck, is that all they have is seafood??? I don't eat seafood, wheres the meats??
My friend just went last week, and the menu is still _very_ seafood focussed. If you're more into meat, I'd probably recommend Maximo
Thanks for this bro. I'm looking for travel pants and just bumped into your video. I ordered the Roark ones.
Hope they work out! They are great pants
Thanks for the video! How have the pants held up and worked for you since the vidoe?
I still have the pants from Foehn, and they are holding up well. I actually ordered a pair of pants from Backcountry (their in-house brand) and wear them more than any other pants.
Johns incredible pizza....was there 2 nights ago. It's actually good. $120 for an annual pass
My interest is p piqued re: an annual pass
Great video but this feels more like a travel guide rather then the cost of living for actually living in Puebla
That's fair
We tend to overthinking ourselves into problems and threats to our future. Our brains have been conditioned to do that. I like mindfulness meditation for gaining clarity. The workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels has been helpful.
Thank you for your comment and for that book recc 🙏🏽 I never thought I was anxious...until I learned what anxiety is
Didn’t get to go there but def going to try it next time. Califa is def over priced but still yummy. I would say go to La Guererense
Mi Compa Chava has not slowed down at all! Califa's prices have continued going up. I think a gaona costra is $8+!
I just made a reservation. We will be in Mexico City in a few weeks! Did you go during the week? I can’t seem to make a reservation for weekend.
Sorry, just seeing this! Hope you had a great trip and enjoyed your meal here. I think I've only ever eaten here during the week (incl. Fridays).
Watching you devour the Poblano con Arrichera y Queso is pure torture!!!
🤣 I need to go back!
"But as a Go game progresses, the possibilities become smaller and smaller, the board does take on order. Soon all the moves are predictable."
I love this, dude.
Hi can you tell me best place for tostadas??
Let me think about it--can't think of anything off the top of my head. In CDMX? Any chance you're going to Guadalajara?
@@intristang just Mexico City, I’m doing my food research so if you can’t think of anything don’t worry. Thank you!
Check out La Docena for seafood and tostadas. El Pescadito for shrimp/fish tacos
The tuna tostadas at Contramar are great. I just think their fish and other dishes are overrated
@@intristang my sister told me the same thing, she said get about 10 tuna tostadas haha. Unfortunately they are fully booked so we booked the sister restaurant which has pretty much same menu. Thanks for the recs, much appreciated
