Cancer Survivorship 101: From Sexual Health to Side Effects Management
"From Sexual Health to Side Effects Management", with Narjust Florez (Duma), MD
Due to the quarantine, we had to cancel our annual in-person Cancer Survivorship 101 event that was planned for June, 2020. Instead, we created a series of video lectures presented here on our website and our TH-cam page featuring the speakers that were to be highlighted at the event.
From Sexual Health to Side Effects Management
Narjust Florez (Duma), MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School
Thoracic Medical Oncologist
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
450 Brookline Avenue, Dana 09
Boston, MA 02215
Dr. Narjust Florez is originally from Venezuela. She completed her internal medicine residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she was the chief fellow from 2018 -2019.
She is the Associate Director of the Cancer Care Equity Program, a thoracic medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Cancer Center and a Member of the Faculty at Harvard Medical School. In 2022, Dr. Florez also became the first Latina to hold an Associate Editor position in oncology as the new Associate Editor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the JAMA Oncology Journal.
Dr. Florez’s clinical interests include targeted therapy for lung cancer and the care of women with lung cancer, including their unique aspects of cancer survivorship. She is the principal investigator of the Sexual Health Assessment in Women with Lung Cancer (SHAWL) Study, the largest study to date evaluating sexual dysfunction in women with lung cancer.
Apart from her clinical interests in lung cancer, she is also a leading and productive researcher in cancer health disparities, gender and racial discrimination in medical education and medicine. Dr. Florez is one of the co-founders of the Twitter community #LatinasInMedicine, now composed of over 8,500 members globally. She received many awards, including the 2018 Resident of the Year Award by the National Hispanic Medical Association, 2019 the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship award, the 2020 Rising Star award by the LEAD national conference for women in hematology and oncology, and the 2021 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) North America Cancer Care Team Award for outstanding clinical care.
In addition, Dr. Florez founded the Florez (formerly Duma) Lab in 2019. The laboratory focuses on lung cancer, social justice issues in medicine and medical education. The laboratory long-term goals are to create a welcoming environment for medical trainees from historically underrepresented groups in medicine while improving the care of vulnerable populations.
Members of the Florez Lab are agents of change. Since its foundation, the Duma laboratory has received research funding from several national agencies, published over 30 studies and editorials.
Her work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nature, Cancer Cell, JAMA Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, (amongst many others), and featured in various media outlets including The New York Times, STAT News, Healio, Onclive, Vox News, Business Insider, ASCO Post, and Doximity.

Survivor Journeys has been a non-profit organization since March, 2015. Its origins, began during the year-long medical quarantine Dr Jay Burton lived through after his stem cell transplant for Acute Myeloid Leukemia which ended in late October 2011. Dr Burton’s emotional and social support experiences prompted speaking engagements about cancer survivorship. The community interest generated from these talks, as well as the lack of emotional and support services for cancer survivors in our region, led to the creation of Survivor Journeys.

CancerSurvivorship101, 2020: Introduction with Jay Burton, DO
i have a mixed memory of my post cancer journey. I'm extremely thankful for the nurses helping me through that trauma,i'm a survivor after having a refractory ALCL at the end pf a C.H.O.P. treatment the 1st opinion was "we cannot help you anymore this cancer is too difficult to treat we give you 3 to 4 months"My survival instict took over and brought me to 2nd opinion who saw and checked on me and my medical raport and answered "if you were my patient i would have given you B-C.H.P. treatment with radiation therapy combined. I had to wait in a room in a strange cities hospital to hear the verdict. My 2nd Opinion responded : your hematologist and i have some work to do and she will invite you in in probably a few weeks. You may recieve treatment with a single Brentuximab Agent without chemo. The only question is will you give her a second chance ? I had to trust my hematologist once again after hearing her verdict about my surviving chance being almost 0 %. A few weeks later i was hospitalised and given the treatment followed by revalidation therapy till early february 2 nd this Year. I recovered from something that was esteamed nearly impossible. All i had was having Faith in Christ Jesus who promissed my before hearing my death sentence from my hematologist that i would make a full recovery. And to my suprise i was getting better.but the scars of this event are still present. something i like to frame it as Complex PTSD because the mixed emotions i was going through : the kind words of the nurses being quarantined when i had the flue and the coaching words of my personal coach. They wanted me to go through a stemcell transplant which i found out it's risky and even deadly dangerous. I'm still alive still clean and in remission and give thanks onto God for healing me.
Such a good video, thank you! I had cancer year 2000 at the age of 23 and still have not got over it. So I think, I have PTSD. Currently having therapy again, so hoping it to help. 🙏
Why don’t you go seek psychological help? Can an oncologist refer patients to these professionals that could help with PTSD?
I already have C-PTSD because of physical and sexual child abuse. The new stress of stage 3 breast cancer has pushed me to the brink and my oncologist is ignoring the effects of PTSD in my treatment. I have complained but their response was a simplistic "Try harder" and "take responsibility for yourself" instead of trying to work with me.
His team thought my TINEA-VERSICOLOR was GVHD. Treated me wit 80mg of prednisone for over a year and a half. Took only 4 days to clear up after they finally sent me to a dermatologist.
PSMA PET/CT in place of bone scan
No one knows about this at DFCI. Never mentioned in clinics. Sounds great, but basically puffery.
Wearing a mask and seeing people in mask cause’s an angry stress response after cancer treatment during covid. How do I deal with this?
Hello I am a 30+ year cancer survivor from Hodgkin’s disease and I am looking for information on what long-term effects can possibly occur after having chemotherapy as I am in my 60s now I’ve developed over the last couple of years some health issues that I’m trying to find out if it could be possible that they have occurred from possibly taking chemotherapy along time ago thank you
