    This great video just made my life so much easier. Working on this was on the to do list. My “opinionated” mare also does exactly as you described. So when my lovely horse was diagnosed with ulcers after colic surgery, we were in a pickle. Your straightforward real world approach and emphasis on the time it took saved the day. Took 20 minutes, but we got the whole tube of gastro guard down. We should be really good at it after 25 more days. Thank you!!

      @SusanneMistric I'm so glad you were able to make some progress. I'm not sure how my gelding got to be so bad over time, but this approach has sure helped. I hope your horse has a good recovery from their ulcers and you are able to feel more in control of getting the medicine where it needs to be. Thanks for stopping in and especially for sharing your own story. Happy trails. 🐎

    I’m a Vermeer fan, owning a 604N with 5000 bales on it, 5 row wheel rake, four basket tedder, TM800 trailed mower. They’re holding up nicely, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase Vermeer, but the main thing is having a dealer that’s knowledgeable and willing to help during those trying times! Happy Harvesting 🙂🌾🌾🌞🌞

      @williambrewer6346 thanks for the input. Our first round baler was a 504 Super I. It was a good baler to get going with. Vermeer was putting up nice bales at the Expo. We have a dealer within an hour from us, so it's a good option. The only bummer to Vermeer is that you can't order parts online. We also had a Vermeer 8 wheel rake that was a nice solid machine. I know it has been common practice to think crabgrass is a "weed" and terrible in Bermuda grass fields. I am curious why you think it is so bad. I actually grow crabgrass for hay and customers love it. It actually test better that bermuda in most cases.I would not waste any money trying to get rid of it in bermuda if I were growing bermuda. I would think of it as a taster high quality spice instead. Properly cured Red River crabgrass holds a beatufil green color in the my square bales that horse people think is important. Crabgrass does take more drying time as you mention. I cut my purpose drawn crabgrass with a mower conditioner and ted 2 to 3 times. Yes it is more work but the end result is worth it on certain fields. It has to be watched just like Bermuda because army worms love it too.

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch หลายเดือนก่อน

      @boltactionshooter I have baled a good bit of crabgrass myself as a livestock owner. My horses have always eaten it just fine. I personally don't have anything against the grass. Once you put in time and money to have your fields sprigged and are moving in a direction to market Bermuda grass, then crabgrass becomes one of the top opponents for infiltrating your stand. There is an unbelievable seed bed available in my area. So, it is a challenge when you want to grow and harvest something other than crabgrass. It takes a good bit of persistence to keep it at bay.

      @michiganhay7844 The wheel had definitely become one with the spindle. It shouldn't have taken all of that effort to get the wheel off but I guess years of grime had it welded in place. It did. It really made a difference with the vaseygrass. The pre-emergent made the most improvements with the foxtail. There are not many options for vaseygrass in Bermuda, and this was definitely a good strategy for that.

      Yes it is. I really enjoy the user friendly features. The unit is holding up well and I have had zero issues with the software. Everything operates as it should. It's a really nice unit.

      @donniehutto5665 anytime. Always glad to share information and hopefully take some of the confusion out of trying to make a decision. I know the feeling. There's so much stuff out there, it's hard to decipher. And thank you for taking time to watch the video.

    Looking good! How did you guys make out on square bales? Find some good horse customers that want clean hay like yours and those square ps will be worth it.

      Thank you. We were averaging 50 bales per acre on our best field and 41 per acre on others for 535 total. I have thoroughly enjoyed this adventure

    Way to get after it there gurl. Hay looked really good. That's a pretty nice baler setup there. Glad you were able to get the nitrogen down ahead of a rain shower to help things along. Thanks for the ride along. Take care.

    Hay looks great. I’d love to know a cost per acre for what’s being sprayed, I guess I know it’s easy to spend a fortune on chem to make clean hay but at what cost and can you really recover that cost vs just having a few unwanted weeds/grasses.

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a very real point. The cost of everything is sky high and if it wasn't for foxtail, some variable grasses would be acceptable. When I was just keeping bushes and briars out of the fields, it was a lot more enjoyable. But when foxtail moved in, it turned everything on its head. It's a real rock and a hard spot situation.

    Goog to see you are doing what you need to do..... We managed to get a big enough window to accomplish !st cut in the shed, the nitrogen applied, and managed to bale a loal to deliver;..... Clint uses urea because he doesn't want to use liquid nitrogen in his Iva Sprayer

    What tips do you have for someone that is cutting hay for the first time

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would decide what type of hay I am wanting to produce. For many years we cut whatever the land produced and that worked for us for a long time. Then we started spraying herbicides to reduce bushes and briars. Slowly we have evolved into producing a particularly grass. You just have to know what you want your final product to be and what your needs are. It costs a lot of money to go across those fields, so make sure you are getting some return on your product. Secondly, don't go equipment broke. Use what works and grow into newer, different things. Third, make sure your hay is dry. Don't get in a rush. If you have mixed grasses, unfortunately their drying times will be different. So be cautious of baling too soon. Fourth, you will get out of your soil what you put into it. Soil fertility is key no matter what you're growing. Fifth, weathermen are notoriously wrong, mother nature supercedes everything, and remember to have fun.

    How well did this perform on the knotroot foxtail ? Thanks for sharing this

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It worked great killing what was above ground so you got a good cutting but it certainly didn't kill the roots. The plants slowly came back. I have found that 8oz/acre glyphosate in combination with 1.5 oz/acre Pastora worked wonderful. The Bermuda grass tolerated it well.

    Do you think your Facet L did a good job on your knotroot foxtail ? Having a big problem here with it in bermuda hay. I also am using Rezilon early season and thinking about adding a second after first cutting, like you if I can get the rain

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Facet did decent to clean up for the next cut but it didn't kill any roots. So over time, they began to regrow. The best thing I have found is 8oz per acre glyphosate with 1.5 oz per acre Pastora. That mix really helped clean up the field. It didn't yellow any of the Bermuda, but it was slow to reach mature height.

    We regularly get 80 mph spring winds with storms...how does this not blow away? Worried about it blowing on its side and injuring the horses.

    • @TheJfitch
      @TheJfitch 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The strongest winds we get are around 30mph. So, I can't speak for anything any stronger. The hut weighs about 230 pounds, so it it is fairly substantial and with the openings on each side, wind can pass through.
