That looks pretty cool. I’m sure this game will be a lot of fun. I like how the battle system is based on TTYD. I know a lot of older fans aren’t into the newer games and I don’t bother, but one thing the newer games have that would enhance this one is a high level of interactivity in the world. I really enjoyed restoring parts of the landscape, and the little puzzles. My idea Paper Mario would be a game with a great story, lots of creative character designs, TTYD’s battle system, and the interactive world of the newer ones. Good luck on this. Is there somewhere I can wishlist this to keep tabs on it for the eventual Steam release (however far in the future that may be)?

It's a tough time right now and not just in game development. That said, I see it's effecting a lot of larger businesses, especially those that that expanded during covid times, so it's hard to know if it'll effect smaller ones in the same way. I hope not. I wish you luck with your studio and hope you can keep red.

I really don't think you need a publisher in this day and age. They used to be necessary as they would deal with things like printing and distributing copies of your game, but now you can just put your game up on digital storefronts yourself. All a publisher will likely do nowadays is take money from you for very little benefit to you in return.

Look at Draconia, Day Of Dragons, and Charles Cox art, they are all making games on their own and just taking it day by day. It's a lot I agree.

I would still pursue making what makes you happy. If it makes you happy, when you grow old and frail as we all will, you wouldn't want to regret having not done what you only dreamed about doing.

game dev in 2024 is a dead end career with below average pay for most other types of software development...

It's just the product of the modern age. Now everyone is connected, everyone have a computer, all kinds of free and open source software available with extensive documentations and tutorials. It wasn't like that 10-15 years ago. People have ideas (good or bad), everyone wants to make their own games and there's nothing stopping them. I mean, why did you get into it? So the market became absolutely flooded, and it was expected. It really is no surprise that studios going tits up left and right. It would be surprising if they didn't. Today the only way to make it is with an unlimited budget and a large team (AAA studios), or if you're an indie dev, you have to bribe a few big influencers to put your game on their screen. Otherwise your odds are very slim. That's the reality.
