This case is a great example of how important history is when it comes to cytology! This is a case of a 5yo NM hound mix. About 1 month ago had two ~1cm round firm skin masses appear on the outside of each mid pinna. Non-pruritic, not changing. All else normal. This is a case of Mycobacterium! Check out the rounds video for all the details. Welcome to the Pocket Pathologist TH-cam channel! I'm ...

      Thanks for the kind words Sarah! Totally hear you on the background noise. Had to record this in the coffeeshop I was working from before I headed out to pick up my kids or it was never gonna happen 🙃. I find if I wait until conditions are perfect things never get done, so this one I had to accept it was a little noisy and just get er done! 😁 I do appreciate the feedback though.

    I've been diagnosed with tick borne relapsing fever. I live on the east coast of North Carolina where it is not supposed to be. I was having troubling neurological symptoms and had a fever that would come and go. I had body aches and muscle pains. I knew I had been bitten by a tick and had a picture of it from that day. I was tested for Lyme and tested negative and sent home with no treatment. I requested a peripheral blood smear and my PCP refused. My insistence got me kicked out of her entire medical practice because a nurse misunderstood something I said and thought I was going to report them to the medical board, which was never my intention, but thanks for the idea, nurse. Subsequent visits to doctors, feeling like something was seriously wrong with me, resulted in being told I was imagining my symptoms. Eventually, I was able to have a very expensive (not covered by insurance) test done by Vibrant-America which found the problem. It's times like these that I wish *I* could see a veterinarian. Nice job helping this dog in a timely manner. I was not so lucky.

    Super cool finding! Is it normal to see it in the background (“off cell”) as well? I have a formerly feral cat who had abnormalities on routine bloodwork, mild anemia and unusual diff (low neut/high lymph and monocytes). Turns out he had m. turicensis AND m. haemominutum! Not visible on smear, no idea how long he’d been carrying that around!

    • @pocketpathologist
      @pocketpathologist ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question-- yes! Since Mycoplasma is an epicellular parasite (meaning it attaches to the outside of the cell rather than going inside), it is common for them to pop off and be free in the background. A tip for practice is if you're suspecting mycoplasma in a patient, do a blood smear right off the needle that you drew blood with before transferring to EDTA. That transfer process from the need to EDTA and then onto a slide can make them pop off the cells (which can make them harder to ID correctly). So interesting about your cat! M. haemominutum is especially tiny so can be really hard to see in smears.

    My dog developed a painful but fairly small ranula overnight. He tries to drink water but stops himself. Do you have any suggestions for treatment? I’m going to first have my sister help me look under the tongue to try and find an irritant, like a splinter. I can probably water him with a dropper. And I’m hoping that draining the problem will fix it, but my findings indicate that rarely works? Obviously I’ll consult a vet in person ASAP, but I’m extremely poor and already spent my savings to overcome a crooked highway patrolman’s sabotage. I’m hoping one of the vets on TH-cam supplies additional info while I wait for IRL vets to open.

I was told there are surgery and chemo could be options for this kind of cancer. Looking at the surgery that is no way Lucy want to live. Plus, I don't have that kind of money, she may not be quailify for it due to her age They did gave me steroid for her. It help her somewhat. @@sarahfussell2312 My dog went to a specialist small-animal surgeon. She removed the anal gland entirely. In addition, they did xryas and ultrasounds to see if the cancer had spread. The pathology on the gland confirmed it was malignant, but was removed entirely (albeit with narrow margins). While the possibility exists that there are still cancer cells in her body, for now, there is no evidence that it had spread. Early detection is key. There are veterinary oncologists, you might talk to one to see what typical treatment might be for a dog that has metastatic adenocercinoma. Best wishes!
