Síle Denvir is a sean-nós singer and harpist who is deeply influenced by her upbringing in the west of Ireland Connemara Gaeltacht where she was surrounded by music and song from an early age. A native Irish speaker, her singing is very much rooted in the ancient style of sean-nós or old-style Gaelic singing, and she has the ability to make the local global through her ethereal performance style.

Tá na páipéir dhá saighneáil is tá na saighdiúir ag dhul anonn
Tá drumadóirín aoibhinn aerach ag Clanna Gael ag dhul go Tír na Long
Dhá mbeadh agam is dhuit a bhéarfainn céad is dhá mhíle bó
Ar chuntar thú a bheith in d’fhéirín liom go Contae Mhaigh Eo.
Ar mo luí dhom ar mo leaba sí mo osna bhíonns mór
Is ar m’éirí dhom ar maidin sí mo phaidir mo dheoir
Tá gruaig mo chinn ag titim ’s ag imeacht mar an gceo
’S le cumha i do dhiaidh, a stóirín, ní bheidh mé i bhfad beo.
Nuair a éirím amach go huaigneach sea bhreathnaím uaim ar an gcnoc úd thall
Bím ag smaoineamh ar do chúilín dualach a d’fhág an chrua-arraing thrí mo lár
Tá mo chroí istigh ina leac dhe ghual dubh ’s fear mo thruaigh níl ach Rí na nGrást
Is pé ar bith cailín óg a bhéarfas uaim thú, go síntear suas í i gcóntra chláir.
Tá mo stocaí uilig stróicthe ’s tá mo phócaí gan pingin
Tá mo nuachulaith phósta ar ndóigh gan sníomh
Tá giní i dteach an óil orm ’s níor ól mé ariamh braon
Sé mo léan géar, a mhíle stóirín, gan mé is tú óg seal arís.
’S nach aoibhinn do na héiníní a éiríonns go hard
’S a bhíonns ag ceiliúradh le chéile ar aon chraoibhín amháin
’S ní mar sin dhom fhéin ná mo chéad mhíle grá
’S fada fánach óna chéile a bhíonns ár n-éirí gach lá.
Translation
The papers are signed and soldiers go over
The sweet drums of Clanna Gael going abroad
If I had two thousand and one hundred cattle I’d gladly give them to you
If you came with me to County Mayo.
My sighs are loud as I lie on my bed
As I rise in the morning tears are my prayers
I’m losing my hair to the mist as it goes
And pining for you darling, I will not live long more.
I wake forlorn and stare at the mountain
Thinking of your tressed form that put an arrow through my heart
My heart is but a coal black stone, wasting away before the King of Grace
Whichever young girl who takes you from me, may she be stretched in a coffin.
My socks are all torn and not a penny in my pocket
My bridal suit is unmade
There’s a guinea on my tab, and I never drank a drop
My grief, my dearest darling, that we not have our youth once more.
How beauteous for the birds that sing on high
Hanging together on one single branch
Unlike the tale of me and my one true love
Rising each morning so far apart.

Oh my.... I'm sitting here quite speechless. <minutes later...> tongue tied still, but I need to say this: I am so glad that I'm still around after all the decades of my life to have heard your voice and this song <3 I just don't know what else to say... Go deimhin, is fiú an saol a bheith agat.
Gura maith agat as sin a chur ar fáil dúinn agus an guth binn draíochtúil ag Síle Denver
