The downside to Micro inverters is the long term after sales support issues, say you have 24 on the roof, 2 years later 1 micro inverter dies and needs replacing. Then 3 months later another one dies and so on…the installation company will potentially have a massive after sales support issue to deal with, that’s if they are still around to support their customers.

Enphase is good. That is what we have on our house. However upgrading isn't as simple as he makes it out to be. For example, adding new panels. Turns out we can't just upgrade the 13 panels on the front of the house, even though they are a separate array. The new ones are not compatible with the ones we have on the back. We would need to purchase a completely new system. Not sure I would go this way again.

As a plumber I’m not a fan of heat pumps. They are expensive and complicated. A standard electric HW system is simple and easy to repair. Add the Catch Power unit and you have the best of both worlds. We have an EV and charge it for 6c/kwh from midnight which is hard to beat. Even a solar PV system would struggle to keep up unless it’s a massive 3 phase system. Good video but I’m not sold on heat pumps ✌️

As an aerospace electronics engineer I chose a large 15 kw string inverter system over microinverters for several reasons that mostly track back to reliability and maintenance. 1. Parts fail, less parts fail less. Each microinverter is filled with many parts leading to many failure opportunities. The component count in a few string inverters is far less. 2. Heat kills electronics parts. Microinverter components running on a hot summer roof are often reaching 150 degrees+. String inverters mounted inside a home or garage experience far less thermal stress. 3. To fix something you need access. When a microinverter fails, you are up on the roof disassembling the panel array to get access. The warranty does not cover those labor costs, and they may exceed the cost of the microinverter. My string inverters are far easier to access. 4. Water ingress. Microinverters on a roof will experience all the rain water running under the panels. As seals deteriorate over the years, water ingress will start causing failures. String inverters in a house or garage are sheltered from this. Summary is that I feel string inverters are a superior approach. Your mileage may vary.

Awesome video man, getting Tesla Powerwall 2 shortly and you have helped me out immensely. Just a question tho.... does the solar keep charging the Tesla Battery when the Grid Voltage is over voltage? Which I am currently being cut off from feed in tariff as the grid reaches 251 volts. It seems that more and more solar farms in the area are over producing and causing the grid to shut down home solar? Thanks again

Something that to my understanding Enphase IQ8 is the only one who can enable is to “charge the Powerwall during blackout if there is sun even if the Powerwall is depleted”. String inverters cannot do this as they always need grid connection or sufficient charge in battery.

With just 6.6kw and EV, the panel will generate about 13kwh during winter and 28kwh during summer. Most of the generated power will be used for everyday usage and charging EV then there is very little left to charge the battery. How does it make sense to have even one battery financially? or was it for reason other than financial?

I had a heat pump and the compressor blew up. As is was only 3 years old we converted it to an element. Then the coil leaked the refrigerant in the tank which is carcinogenic was in the tank, please be aware oil floats on top of the water we had probably consumed some of it over the years. We only discovered it as brown stuff was coming out the taps years later. So they can be a health hazard.

In July/August 2024 a cookie cutter 6.6kW is less likely to be the best value solution that it was back when they first came to market over 4 years ago. Today’s 450w panels means more roofs are capable of fitting 10kW+ hence the growth in 8 & 10 kW string inverters. Using micro inverters does help with ensuring maximum efficiency but also the “inverter” capacity simply adjusts with each panel fitted which is an under appreciated benefit. I’m near Penrith & personally running 3x 6.6kW systems on 3x 5kW single phase inverters, each on 1 of 3 phases as my distributor allowed our property a maximum of 20kW inverter input balanced across the phases. Even with my big roof the panel ratings in 2019 were typically 315w so that took up all my north & west space (no east roof). We also wanted Tesla Powerwalls installed & they are friendly with single phase inverters which further lead us to our setup. Lastly I knew a single 15kW 3 phase inverter would be no more efficient than 3x 5kW inverters and yet much more expensive to purchase and to replace if faulty out of warranty. Having 3 seperate 6.6kW systems provided triple redundancy and 6 strings to help improve the efficiency of the panels throughout the day. The point I’m making is that 6.6kW string inverter installs have and can still be a great solution in specific situations. Just be aware that panels are now rated to produce nearly 25% more than they did in 2019 when 6.6kW became a thing so don’t settle for 6.6 when your roof can now easily be carrying a 10kW+ array or even significantly more. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

You are very misleading. Most panels have diodes that allow them to be isolated when one is shaded so it no longer causes a large power drop. And micro inverters fail a lot and cost a lot to get someone to replace them. It is clear that you are making money from installing these. You also did not talk about optimizers.

Blabla...shade..algorithm..blabla.. They forget something important, all panels are not egal vs shades....depending how there electric circuit is built. Whatever algorithm you got in a chain inverter would solve a shitty panel. So...contrary to their discussion, a chain inverter that work good with shades need many other parameters to be fullfilled. This is NOT the case with a micro inverter.
