HOW LONG BLUES - RAY HOOKER & RAY AUSTIN W. MARTIN SCHREIBER
. . . alright - so here is the last of the three tracks Messrs. Hooker and Austin recorded with me at Ray Austin's home studio in 1997. I already stated that I ain't all too proud of this one . . . but what the heck?! It's a cover of Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell's 1928 recording "How Long Blues", although I think Ray Hooker (who sang lead on our version) didn't care too much about the original lyrics. But maybe you enjoy it anyway . . . :-)
p.s. The three Austin & Hooker tracks are only rough mixes - they were never properly mixed and left unfinished. The original multitrack tapes are probably lost and all I've got is a cassette copy of inferior quality. :-(
p.p.s. One thing I remember very well about this recording: Ray Austin (whose roots lay in jazz, which was his first musical love) did not only insist on playing trumpet here - he was also adamant about those last trumpet notes over the closing chord . .. and he couldn't care less that the other Ray and me didn't like 'em. To this day they don't make me happy at all (sorry, Ray!), but it's too late - I can't take 'em out again.

As I've been asked to bring up more from the tracks I'd recorded with 'The Two Rays' (this certainly never was an official moniker!), I dug out what's left on cassette from those 1997 sessions. There are, however, some letdowns. First of all there are no more than just 3 songs on that tape - and having just listened back to them, I remembered why I have chosen to upload only "Tattler" in the fi...

Not too much I can say about this one here. Barry Upton has obviously always been some kinda British jack of all trades through diverse musical styles and genres. In the mid-90s he's been into the so-called new country scene and I caught his "Earthquake City" on the long since gone London-based 'Country Music Radio For Europe" (CMR). Enjoy!

I saw 'The Looney Tunes' (from Switzerland) when they were playing the best live music club Basel ever had, the legendary 'Atlantis' (or the ''Tis', as the locals used to call it). My band at the time desperately tried to secure a gig at that venue - in vain. Three of us were in the 'Atlantis' audience when the 'Looneys' played there - and all of a sudden the vocal p.a. was silenced by a power ...

One last track from the "(Knäckebröd) Blues" releases, this is a cover of Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's 1955 single B-side "(I) Love To Love You", which - in the hands of Louise Hoffsten - sounds just like Watson might have written it especially for her. Enjoy!

Two years after Swedish singer and harmonica player Louise Hoffsten was diagnosed with MS in 1996, she released a book called "Blues", which mirrored her dealing with the illness and her divorce. The second part of my favourites from Frankie Miller's 1981 appearance on BBC Scotland's "In Concert" programme. The surprise here is the first track: "Cold And Rainy Night" (0:00) was originally recorded as a slow soul ballad for the non-LP B-side of the 1979 single "Good To See You" - here Frankie speeded it up and turned it into a blistering rock'n'roll song. Did Taste ever do sound checks or rehearse anything before gigs? Never. It was always off the cuff stuff. Probably my favourite live band of all time. John Wilson was one hellava drummer & Charlie McCracken with him, gave Rory the backing he needed to improvise. No one song was ever played the same way & I saw them many times from 1968 till they split . . . It was a travesty that shouldn't have happened & although Gallagher went on to have a great solo career, he never had the freedom to fully express himself like he did in Taste. We'll never know what they could have achieved if they had stayed together.

I've read some folk saying her voice had lost so much by this stage in her life but I don't hear that myself. She always gets inside a song and her singing still takes you somewhere new.
