Mounting solar panels BELOW roof racks | Canopy Setup Series
Putting a solar panel on the roof racks feels like choosing your favourite child.
Here’s how I’ve mounted the solar panel beneath the roof racks so the kayak can sit on the roof racks and there’s no more choosing the favourite.
Twice the fun.

Gar Punt III Full Build ( in action) | Caught Coasting
Just skin pan fry in butter for breakfast next day. Nothing better growing up. Unfortunately ate a lot of these from Corio Bay in the 70s and 80s. Most Cadmium contaminated waterway in the world.
@@patricklorkin1557 that’s a great idea. Flounder in the morning. I didn’t know that about Corio Bay. Very sad
Hey Jordan! I’m a nurse and am planning on doing a working lap of Australia with another nurse friend. Currently trying to plan my 4WD build and am very inspired by your setup. Just wondering if you’ve done any dusty trips and if you’ve managed to effectively solve that problem? I have been looking into the EGR dust sealing kit for the tailgate. I drive a 2020 Raptor which only has a soft tonneau on it right now - my stuff is still red from the last time I went to The Cape!!
@@zoewilliams9 Thanks for reaching out Zoe! That sounds like a heap of fun. Dust is a headache. I’ve had a tonneau cover and it was pretty tricky to keep dust out. Once the canopy was on, the tailgate was the main area dust would come in from (provided the canopy is pretty watertight). The tailgate seal definitely helps keep say 98%, which is heaps better than no seal - and much more bearable. There were small gaps that I found by closing myself inside the tub and looking for where light shines through from the outside (provided there is light outside). This helped seal off any remaining gaps so it was blocking virtually everything out. The rear of the tub has some gaps for water to escape (and dust to come in) but I’ve found them much less of an issue in comparison to the tailgate side. Hopefully that makes sense and helps :)
@@caughtcoasting cheers for that. I think I'm going to install that EGR kit and once I select a canopy I will definitely be doing the light test - good idea! I look forward to more of your content :)
@@zoewilliams9 Good luck with the setup and enjoy the process! Thanks heaps :)
Hey mate, where did you get the fittings from?
@@braydenpapalia hey mate, the fittings are all from Bunnings
Where’d you get the water pump from?
@@robertobonomi9690 it’s a Joolca water pump, it came with the hot water system
Im in the planning phase of almost this exact setup, but ive opted to try teflon tape that i got off Amazon for $15. Would live to see more details on how exactly its all put together
@@danielnicholas2786 Even better! Should be smoother. I’ve done a step by step on how I put the drawers together here: www.caughtcoasting.com.au/canopy-diy-drawers/
if i had a tub canopy this is the setup i would copy
@@busheater944 keep us posted if you do 🤙
Just watched all your ute set up videos as I am thinking of going down this path. Great stuff, very informative. Love that they are short and succinct. Keep it up.
@@cruisingandsnoozing1479 Thanks for checking them out. Hopefully they help you and your setup 🙏
Great video, just started following👍
How do you secure the water system into the canopy?
@@FergHyde The drawers sit in front and are bolted to the tub. They stop the water system from moving around 👍
Well done
Nice video. I think the aluminium to me looks better. Did you get yours in a flat pack or did you get a company to install it?. And with aluminium, if you do come across a leak in the joins, have you tried to fix it with a silicon etc or no leaks? Thank you
@@tugboat8475 It came flat packed and I installed it. Initially there were a couple leaks where I had missed some joins. A once over with some more silicone and it’s pretty water tight!
@@caughtcoasting thanks for that. So did you put the silicon on the inside for the leak or the outside? The only reason I'm asking we get ours installed next Monday and we're going away on the Wednesday. So I might grab a tube of it. Did you use the clear or a charcoal color. Thanks
@@tugboat8475 I put it on the inside so it wasn’t visible from the outside. It’s more of a black colour than a charcoal. No worries at all. Enjoy the trip 🤙
Very clever. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for checking it out 🤙
Definitely the spray on is the way to go did not realise moisture could enter under plastic liner Thankyou
Definitely, wouldn’t go back to a plastic
Thanks for pointing out the difference in canopies Interesting.
Good basic set-up works for you. Thanks
Brilliant setup thanks for sharing. I will check out previous Ute content. Subscribed thankyou
No worries, thanks heaps 🤙
i could be wrong but i thought on double cab utes your not meant to mount onto the canopy and roof of the ute together as the tub and cab are not connected
Definitely. The tent is bolted to the canopy and rests on a custom bar on the cabin roof where it can slide
With your fitout, do you bolt anything down/together? Liking what you've done.
@@glennw2001 Hey mate, the setup is bolted through the drawers and fridge section using the factory holes of the tub. Thanks heaps 🤙
Nice work. Simple, functional, looks good. Marine carpet on the sliding surfaces of the draw could work really well too, especially if you’re gonna carpet the outside anyway.
Very true, that’d work too
Wow
