    Great presentation. We have the LAN card but don't want to put a computer at the repeater site. Is there any need to have it installed in the repeater? We plan on using a donor radio and computer at someone's house and want to sell the LAN card if we don't need it. What features does the LAN card give us as far as connecting to the internet? 73, Howard WB4GUD

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Howard. #1. You do not need a computer for the LAN Card to work, a computer is ONLY USED FOR THE SETUP! Wires-X does require a full time computer and donor radio when used off site. #2. I would not sell the LAN Card, you paid $200 for it and that also included installation and setup, good luck on getting $200 when you sell it. Now, at some later date, you realize a need and want to buy another Card, you will pay $300 and you do the install and setup. KEEP IT!!!! The LAN Card is used to setup a private network of repeaters that you would like to connect to either on a regular basis or on a permanent basis. This could be other repeaters that the club has, connecting them for nets, etc. you could talk to any one repeater in the network or combination of repeaters in the system. It is far more reliable than Wires-X! It does require that you have an internet connection at the repeater site, a static IP and ONE port to forward. I hope that I answered your questions. Feel free to ask other questions. Ken KA6SUB

    For my setup, I have the HRI-200 connected to an FTM-200, but do not use a repeater. I get about a 5 mile radius. What am I losing in terms of operations by not connecting through a repeater?

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rob, if you are talking about replacing the FTM 200 with a DR-2X repeater at your house, there would be no difference, but if you were to use a high-level repeater, you would obviously have greater coverage. Keep in mind that the use of a node at your home is for your personal use and should only give you nearby coverage (A Mile or less). Also nodes do not belong on repeater frequency pairs, they should be setup in simplex in the simplex portion of the band. Remember that repeaters should be coordinated through your local frequency coordination group and that some of these groups are either coordinating nodes or working towards node coordination to eliminate interference from adjacent users. I hope that this is helpful to you. Thank you for your question, i'm here to help! 73 Ken KA6SUB

      @@thefusionelmerguy2234 Thanks for the reply. No, I'm happy with my configuration. I was just wondering if I was missing something regarding half duplex/full duplex operations with the way my room/node is set up. It's mostly my wife and I that use the room, so the 5 mile or so radius I seem to be getting works pretty well.

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry, Rob, but I may have misunderstood what you were asking for. Because you're node is not a repeater (Full Duplex) it only transmits what it hears through the Internet (Half Duplex). If you're using a pair of frequencies for your node, one for transmit, and one for receive, then everyone listening to your node will be listening on the output of the node and transmitting on the input of the node therefore, they would never hear anyone else talking to the node who was on RF. Now, if you were to have your node setup in Simplex mode, then everyone would be listening and talking on the same frequency and be able to hear each other, if they were within range of each other units. I'm not sure how you have your nodes set up, you never stated. But I would recommend setting it up in Simplex mode as I feel this would be the best option. I hope this now answers your question. Feel free to call me anytime. 73 Ken

      All Spot devices (including the OpenSpot 4) DO NOT CONNECT TO Wires-X! C4FM is all about using Wires-X to communicate to other node users around the world with that superb sound quality that YAESU’S C4FM is know for. Why do you want to use a HRI-200, if this is for your personal use and not for a repeater, why not use the PDN node. It is easy to setup and use, does not require any port forwarding and will do everything that you would want it to do while surfing Wires-X. Hope that this helps you. 73

    I have a question about the DATA port on the FTX-500 and earlier radios, the 10-pin proprietary mini-DIN port. From what I gather, in APRS the received OTA packets are sent down the RS-232 link on this port, where they can be viewed on a PC or tablet or imported into a GPS display. In C4FM, does this occur with packets for location data? My goal is to get my family all licensed and to be able to monitor location on a tablet or similar for when the group splits up while enjoying the great outdoors, so that we'll know where everyone is. The on-screen distance/bearing is nice, but it doesn't help as much for going to find someone as seeing their location on a map would. If everyone has a System Fusion radio it would seem like it's a lot easier to receive their digital transmission with their location embedded than it would be to configure APRS and dedicate one channel to it.

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I first going to tell you that this is a little bit out of my pay grade, but, I think that if you look at a HT, it has a compass that will plot a course to someone you’re talking to in C4 FM. On My FT 3, you tap the display button and a compass comes up and if you’re talking to someone, their location will be on the compass and you could find your way to them. Never really had a chance to play with that feature, but it looks interesting. In case you’re trying to find Ham that is injured or lost somewhere. Good luck play with that a little bit. Let me know how it works out for you and thank you for asking your question. 73, Ken.

      @@thefusionelmerguy2234 I actually don't have any modern Yaesu equipment, I'm in that phase of trying to determine which digital radio system is right for me. Been licensed for over 20 years but haven't operated very much. By the time I got licensed it was to talk with existing friends and cell phones followed shortly enough that 2m simplex wasn't especially useful outside of mobile operations. Question, if you have a Yaesu 10-pin to computer cable like the SCU-20 or SCU-56, would you be willing to connect that data port from your radio to your PC and to open a terminal emulator like PuTTY to that COM port while making some C4FM contacts, to see if any information is sent from the radio to the PC? That sort of information could be very useful to the community for anyone looking to be able to map-out contacts without having to lose one channel to APRS full time or to participate in traditional APRS at all. Plus if it works that way, it might motivate a bunch of GMRS users that would probably be much happier as hams to actually get licensed and make the jump, since it would be a useful capability when four wheeling or hiking or camping.

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gilson, Fusion is the radios ability to Automatically switch between FM and C4FM (“Yaesu’s System Fusion” Digital Voice) to match the incoming signal. Like FM, C4FM is a Type of emission. If you are using a Fusion capable radio there will be an indicator on the screen showing either FM or DN, you may also see one of them with a Bar over the top. If you see FM, then your radio is locked in FM Mode, If it is DN, then your radio is locked in Digital Mode and if you see either FM or DN with a Bar over it, then your radio is in Fusion or otherwise called AMS (Automatic Mode Select). AMS is what makes Fusion, Fusion! On most radios you can change the Mode by pressing the MODE button or on Mobile radios pressing the P3 Button on the Microphone will also work if buttons have not been reprogrammed. Also remember that the C4FM ONLY works on Yaesu Fusion Repeaters and other Fusion Radios. The Fusion radios will work on all Standard FM Repeaters, but ONLY in FM. I’m hoping that this answers your question, but if it doesn’t, or you have others please ask. 73, Ken “The Fusion Elmer Guy”

      Well Duane, I just think that the numbers weren’t there to warrant continuing to making those radios anymore and even if they did… oh well a five cent loaf of bread is not coming back either. I also understand the problem of cross linking rooms. Yaesu already makes the best system in the world, it is up to us not to screw it up! As a repeater owner, I would first make sure that there were no nodes on my repeater that I didn’t have control of. Next the one Wires-X Node on the repeater would have ALL OFFENDING Rooms BLOCKED from being called to and ALL OFFENDING Nodes BLOCKED from being called to or called from. This action cleans things up real fast! Don’t worry about offending anyone, because they’re not worried about offending you and your rights. When you put a lot of your time and money into making the BEST System around, it just takes one person to turn it into CRAP! As far as Yaesu goes, I think they’re doing it right, they are providing the service and it is up to me as to how I would want to use it. 73, thank you for watching and your comments, Ken

    I learned DMR first as a new HAM which was an ordeal, but I figured it out. Recently I acquired a C4FM radio, which is nice, as I prefer Yaesu over other brands. Most of the other HAMs I’ve spoken to say YSF is much easier to learn than DMR, but I’m not sure that’s true. I’ve spent some time listening through my hotspot, but haven’t tried to join the QSOs yet. Would I be ok using an MMDVM, or would it be wise to set up a wires node?

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234

      In short, if you’re wanting to get on Wiers-X, you need to set up a Wiers-X node, use your radio to set up a PDN node. All the hotspots on the market do not get into Wiers-X, period! “YSF” is the name of a Reflector, it is not owned or operated by Yaesu. If you are using all Yaesu equipment, it will be very easy to learn and use … just don’t try to over think it! Have fun, hope to have a QSO with you some time. 73 Ken KA6SUB

So I have bought myself a little hotspot that will arive in 2024. Once again, thank you and would gladly try to ctc you when I have the hotspot running so I can use wires-x. Wish you a happy and healthy blessed new year. Br Albert

    Tone vs TSQ. Can can a regular FM repeater work if I set my HT in TSQ?

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your questions Marc. There are two ways to find out if the repeater you are interested in is actually sending out an encoded tone. (1) Is to ask the repeater trustee, group in charge of the repeater or (2) merely switch your radio over to TSQ (tone squelch), while QSO is on going. If the QSO goes away, the answer is NO it doesn’t working on that repeater, if you continue to hear the QSO, then it works on that repeater. In a Best Practice scenario, all FM repeaters should be encoding a tone on their output, this would give the operator the option to use either TSQ or the old-fashioned adjust your squelch control every time you change your position or the conditions change. TSQ is far superior to the old method, that’s why repeaters are set up to recognize the proper tone on the input signal of the repeater to activate the transmitter. It cleans up the noisy world that we live in today. I personally feel that this should be an option for the user to choose and use whichever method he or she is comfortable with. Just my two cents worth. I sure hope that this has been helpful to you and again thank you for your question. 73 Ken “The Fusion Elmer Guy”.

    I still haven't been able to connect to fusion and pretty much hate the FT-5 except for the aprs. Im sorry my frustrations are coming out on your comments, but Why would they make finding the repeaters such a pain in the ass to figure out, then add another level of confusion by not having the repeaters do the same functions that you also have no idea what they are. Also why wouldn't the gps function do all that for me? Also if I want to pick what room I would like to enter, NOPE cant do that. So far, I cant stand fusion also cause I cant even get into it. What's amazing is that this radio was so promoted as a radio to get on digital in minutes. LOL Ive owned it for a month and haven't been able to pick a room, the time it goes on the shelf is getting longer and longer.

      Yaesu digital is like 1 1/4 meters. Some areas have more activity then others that have none. Where I am ,there is ONE repeater that is still in AMS mode (up on a mountain at 9,000 feet ) and only a handful of people who have radios to use it. I have a FT70DR and FTM7250 that program easily from the key board. I found a wires x repeater while driving thru Tucson, Phoenix, LA and a linked group around KC and had no problem join the group. There are 3 of us using it as UHF simplex and it is amazing the range a HT has from INSIDE a house. Where are you located?

      I think the new hams gravitate towards “America Link” because there is activity pretty much all the time. It is not always that they came from CB, it could also be that they were from Law-enforcement for many years. If these new hams hear the older, more seasoned hams settling a good example, they may change. Thank you for watching these videos. 73 Ken

    So I get on a local repeater, Put in the PL Tones (DigiID is a CTSCC?) and press DN mode. I have talked with a person and it sounds horrible. But when I press and hold the X, it flashes and goes back to VFO mode. Any ideas?

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Tony for giving me the opportunity to answer your questions. Please remember that PL tones and DG-ID’s are not the same, although have some of the same functions. A PL tone is a sub-audible tone that rides on the carrier of your transmission. A PL tone in the FM world is primarily used to open up the squelch on a repeater, it also can be used to open up the squelch on your radio, eliminating ALL your unwanted noise that seems to break through your manual squelch setting, just to annoy you. A DG-ID code is a code that is imbedded within the header of the C4FM packet stream. DG-ID’s in the C4FM world not only open up the repeater but in some systems will steer it to another repeater or group of repeaters. Sounds like you got on the repeater without any trouble, great 👍. You made a C4FM contact, awesome! Horrible audio? Maybe… Not what you are used to? How does the audio sound between AM and SSB or SSB and FM? You’ll love it after you get used to it. The X button is the Wires-X feature, it only works if the repeater has that optional equipment installed and activated. 1. Just like you set up your radio to use on FM and/or C4FM, you will need to setup your Wires-X feature in the Wires-X portion of the menu on your radio to match the Wires-X node on the repeater. 2. The Wires-X button should ONLY BE PRESSED WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO CONTROL IT!!! Not to talk to someone who is already on frequency! If you hear them, you can talk to them. 3. VFO mode? Wires-X will always stay in VFO mode when it exits the Wires-X mode…pretty annoying if you ask me.

    When using your suggestion of setting up the DR-2X in AMS/FM mode how would digital users hear the repeater? In AMS mode won't their radios switch to FM every time they unkey from a digital transmission and hear the repeater tail?, so the next time they key up they would tx in FM unless they manually select DN or VM. Is there a way to set up Fusion handheld and mobile radios to tx only on digital and receive only on FM? Thanks, Dan

    • @thefusionelmerguy2234
      @thefusionelmerguy2234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan, remember that each model of radio is some what different. I have the FT3D, on that HT you would set the Tx to DN and the Rx would be set to AMS. The repeater is hearing both FM and C4FM, when FM is heard, it passes it through an comes out as FM just like any other repeater. When it hears C4FM it is converted to FM and outputted as FM. Now your radio Rx should be set to FM or AMS and the TX will need to be set to C4FM. The first question is “What radio are we talking about?” I can help you with the FT1D,FT2D, FT3D, FTM100D, FTM300, FTM400D and the FT991. The rest I can guess at.
