Out with the old - new interpretation installed at Stracey Arms Drainage Mill, Norfolk

As part of the Mill and the Marsh Folk project to restore Stracey Arms Drainage Mill in Norfolk, a new suite of interpretation has been installed. Four hanging panels on the ground floor provide information about the mill, the people associated with the mill and the role of the mill as a pillbox during WWII. Eight segments mounted in the crownwheel create a chronological history of the mill. Th...

Gunton Park Sawmill

Gunton Park Sawmill was built in the early 1820s for Edward Harbord, the 3rd Lord Suffield. He acquired the Gunton Park estate after the death of his brother, William Harbord, in 1821. The mill was powered by water from an artificial lake called Sawmill Pond. Initially the mill was constructed to provide timber for use on the estate. The sawmill is powered by two breastshot waterwheels (where w...

    That you can only get to Burney arms mill by boat is an oft repeated myth ! In the 70s and 80s we would often drive over to the mill for a beer and some lighthearted amusement watching the hire craft arrive on a Saturday evening. The track starts at Wickhampton church, crossing the railway line just west of Burney Arms station and then on to the mill. One night the autumnal mists came down and we had a bit of a problem until we realised that not one but 2 new gates had been fitted on the same field !

    • @NorfolkWindmillsTrust
      @NorfolkWindmillsTrust 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That might have been possible in the 70s or 80s, we don't know, but the route you describe certainly wouldn't work now. The track from Wickhampton ends at the Weaver's Way long distance path. This does go south-east to Berney Arms Mill but the route can be difficult to walk at certain times of the year, let alone navigate with a vehicle. Other tracks that lead to Berney Arms are not public roads, so using them would be trespassing. And sadly, the Berney Arms Inn has been closed for a while now in any case.

The old Ruston pump is failing into the drain and the whole site is very sad looking. It's also becoming very dangerous for the public to walk around the site. I suspect it will all get pulled down now shortly!!

      High's Mill is located on the Halvergate Marshes, which is a large area of grazing land in the Norfolk Broads. The mill was a drainage mill which used wind power to help manage water levels on the marshes. If it flooded in winter it could kill the grass and reduce the area of pasture the following year. Water is still managed across the marshes by a system of electric pumps.
