Thank you, that was super helpful and simple :D
Cool to see this vid 8 years later. I bought my permit today for a late season trip to do my first solo trip at cottonwood lakes too. Thinking about doing mt langley but I might be too busy fishing
Thank you for your video and guide! You mention in your guide that there is one tricky spot and that you accidentally went the wrong way at first (to the right of some vertical rock). Does your GPX file show the correct path? I put it through Google Earth but cannot tell where the area of concern is.
Hey there, I've done this peak twice now at this point. It's going to be hard to accurately pinpoint the "concern area" on a gpx file, because really its just that there are 1-2 very small sections where you might need to do some class 2 movements (short and not hard, but could be a little scary if you're not comfortable with that), using your hand and feet in a short section of the trail. Most of the time the "BIG CAIRNS" on the trail will point you in the direction to follow. Its basically a massive boulder/rock field, trail is loosely defined when you get to the summit section, but still fairly easy to follow if there isn't snow. My gpx file on my site is most likely from my "actual" recorded route when I first did it.
@@shedreamsofalpine Thank you!
I'm taking my first 5-day backpacking trip in Wyoming at the end of this month. We are doing a lot of these tips and you've helped me feel more prepared! I'm very excited!
So glad this was helpful! Enjoy your trip in Wyoming!
This was a very helpful video. Thank you, Allison. Fear has always controlled my life.
You're welcome Debbie! Glad it helped!
Glad to find your TH-cam channel. I will be turning 70 in 5 months and I want to learn to solo camp and backpack. My husband is no longer able and my friends don’t like to camp. So this video has been very helpful.
So glad it's been helpful!
Thank you
Would rei have one of those tools
The trowels? (Yes!) -- Or which tool specifically?
How do you trash that bag after
Wherever did you go? You are so inspiring and I love you content I know things change and online can be alot I just want to now what are you doing now?! And are you still running these programs?
I'm still here! I just don't create a lot of content for TH-cam (more stuff on Instagram) :) We still run our Backpacking Badass Program and a new one called The Adventurous Reinvention Experience!
What about when camping in near country? Do we need to keep the hand sanitizer and used menstrual products in the bear canister at night?
Long Answer coming 😅 but hope this helps! The only bears on record in studies and anecdotal evidence that show attraction to used menstrual products are polar bears. Black and grizzly bears have virtually no evidence that suggests they are attracted to them. But it's all pretty inconclusive so precautions are never a bad idea. Personally in black bear habitat, I have never had a problem with either hand sanitizer or menstrual products. Some official precautions recommended by NPS (National Parks Service): 🐻 Do not bury tampons or pads (pack it in - pack it out). A bear may smell buried tampons or pads and dig them up. By providing bears a small food "reward", this action may attract bears to other menstruating women. 🐻 Place all used tampons, pads, and towelettes in double zip-loc baggies and store them unavailable to bears, just as you would store food. 🐻 Many feminine products are heavily scented. Use only unscented or lightly scented items. Cosmetics, perfumes, and deodorants are unnecessary and may act as an attractant to bears. 🐻 Follow food storage regulations and recommendations so you can avoid attracting a bear into your camp with other odors. All odorous items that may attract bears, including food, cooking and food storage gear, toiletries, and garbage, must be kept secured from bears.
@@shedreamsofalpine thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to answer so quickly!
I enjoyed your article!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great footage! I need to do this hike. My cabin is below at the Whiskey Flat trailhead.
It was a useful tutorial thanks.❤
Great video. Thank you.
There’s a two plastic bits under the ring that keep the bladder open for drying
Very useful, thank you!
I use dryer balls and put my dryer on the air fluff (no heat) setting and it puffs the jacket right back to new.
Didn’t have any tennis balls, so used several rolled up socks instead. Worked ok 👍
enjoying your vidoes!
I would also recommend a hair brush/comb! My hair gets so tangly after just a few hours of hiking, especially when wearing a hat, even though I braid it. And a hair brush has made me feel so much better, being able to untangle my hair.
Mine hasn’t started to smell yet, I only wore it 4 or 5 times but it h has a little stain from thousand islands sauce. Any idea how to treat the stains?
I keep a “potty” kit with a trowel, urinary device, wee wee cloth, TP, baby/body wipes, reusable sanitary pads, a 2” thick piece of zote soap (to clean the wee wee cloth and pads with), and a hope and a prayer that I can aim for the cat hole. I also wet wipe before going to bed to keep my sleeping bag as clean as possible.
Thanks! I didn’t necessarily like what the video had to say but maybe I’ll try camping now. Is this how you prevent uti’s out on the trail?
I'm scared but I want to do it
Add a portable bidet like culo clean; wash up after pooping. Kula cloth is awesome. Deuce of spades is a good shovel. Femmycycle is my menstrual cup.
Have you ever washed a Save the Duck lightweight jacket? I followed the tags and handwashed (that was a complete nightmare with the amount of water it collected). We removed the water well and hug to dry to find I have water stains all over. The tag says to handwash and tumble dry low. Called the company but they were no help.
So you wipe your vag with a cloth with dried piss on it, urine is a waste product and you don't re use loo roll or use a dirty cloth at home so why would you be filthy enough not to wash your piss rag! .. a recipe for a severe UTI! that is disgusting so is not washing! vile!
The pee funnel has been SUPER helpful for me. I don't have to undo/take off everything and do the awkward squat. It also makes cleanup super easy.
Awesome! Thanks for the help!
Our first ascent to the top of Telescope Peak was February, 1972. We used 12 point salewa adjustable Crampons and a aluminum Ice axe. No need for rope. Very icy and windy on the final trek up to the summit. Steep slopes on both sides up the final leg. Then the proverbial signing of the climbers log on the summit. It was windy and cold. Our thermostat read minus -10 F with the wind chill factoring in. So cold that one of our polaroid cameras froze up the shutter mechanism. Great views of Death Valley Below. Subsequently through the years we climbed Telescope Peak three more times, twice in the winter and one in the spring. Back in those days the Wildrose Ranger station was still occupied, but closed during the heavy winter period. I remember also signing in at the Wildrose Station as a courtesy for the Ranger that we were heading up the road to hike up to Telescope Peak.
Looks like a great time

Great Advice !!!
Backpacking changed my life. First, while serving in the Marine Corps I learned how to put in the miles without tiring, then an opportunity presented itself to live out of my pack for three years while divorcing my alcoholic wife. So much has been connected for me by being stripped of my worldly possessions, house that I built, my truck, and 48 years of accumulating tools of the trade to provide for my family, but the freedom I now enjoy is immense. Please share your path.
How are you doing now?
Awesome video, makes me want to go
Thank you!!! Now I have a game plan! Thank you Allison Boyle!!
Thank you for taking the time to shoot a quick video of what you pack for a day hike but in watching your video I noticed your blanket. Do you remember where you bought it or the brand?
do you put your tampons at night on a bear bag?
I would like to buy a new puffy down coat. The issue is, I've been washing all my clothes on the 2-hour, hot sanitize cycle, due to covid (I have a chronic illness and need to avoid germs). So would that harm it? My main fear is I don't want it to rip, and the feathers to come out and ruin my washing machine. Please let me know what you think, thanks.
This is a good question. I would reach out to maybe a company like Patagonia to ask them about this! They have a pretty responsive help desk.
@@shedreamsofalpine Ok, thanks
Covid doesn't live on a surface. They originally thought that it did. Now they know it's airborne. So I wouldn't worry about that side of things.
I participated in Boy Scouts and made it to the rank of eagle. Gotta say, short little videos packed with quality information like this are wonderful to stumble upon :)
Good but how to disconnect hose. Never used/cleaned camel pack before.
Varies between packs, some don't disconnect.
Do you have an Amazon list you can share for gear?

Spent my summer of 89 working that trail from bubs creek bridge to glen pass as a crewleader for the ccc best summer ever
I have long hair that can also become oily at the end of the day. I tried dry shampoo. It sucked. And then I questioned whether or not I could use something like cornstarch. I have found, at least preliminarily that the cornstarch bonds with a lot of the oils and will flake off, leaving my hair fluffy. I generally use about a tablespoon or less and finger it through my hair.
Bad music
Thanks I’ll be camping for the first time next week so excited ❤️
Looks like your pup loved it just as much as you did!
