My painted dragons in February
LivingWithLizards.com
I left the camera running on my outdoor painted dragon terrarium this afternoon here in central Virginia. It is the end of February and only a few days ago we had a day of freezing rain that broke a big branch off of my pine trees, and this was followed by a night that was 17 degrees f (-8.3 c) , but we had some warm days in the 60s this week with nights above freezing so the painted dragons decided to wake up from their winter rest and catch some sun. The male displays to the female and there is some interesting tail wagging behavior from both. He was up 2 days earlier- today was the first day I've seen the female. This is temporary- the weather will cool and it will rain this coming week so they will go back to sleep again until spring truly comes.

  • @erikm8372
    @erikm8372 ปีที่แล้ว

    I imagine this would be perfect. And, obviously, I’m sure you’d keep it free of flooding and snow when it occurs… I used to live in southern MD, so not too far off. I know how wild the weather can be out there… Some years it barely snows, and other winters, we had two weeks off of school in January. But I think this setup is great, and it would work for American desert species; people forget that the deserts of the southwest can even freeze, at nighttime especially, and quite often throughout the year. Daytime temps can be 100°F and nighttime could drop to 40°. Or less, depending. The lizards definitely seek out heated rocks to shelter under. This was inspiring! I want to move some if my animals outside soon. I live in San Diego, lol. Shouldn’t be a problem here. Haha. We even have collared lizards in the mountains. I really want to do a setup like this with desert iguanas.

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should work great. I went with raised beds like these because we have a very high water table - the raised beds have good drainage.During the winter when the lizards are sleeping I cover with plastic tarps and that keeps things dry as well. I'm in USDA zone 7a which is very similar to much of the eastern collared lizard's natural range. But the raised beds work really well also.

    We had a granite pair give us 2 clutches of 9 and 7 one in April one in June. They all were doing well but recently we've been losing one every few days. They get lethargic and eventually die. Have you had this issue at all? We have 7 left from origi al clutch.

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not had that issue. But from experience with other baby lizards in the past, when such issues arise it is usually a good idea to check the basics. Basking area with a true thermal gradient and not only a hot spot. Warmest basking area temperature 105-110 (can be a little warmer if you set up a nice gradient rather than a hot spot), a cooler area on the far end of the terrarium. Full spectrum lighting. Good supplement like rhapeshy calcium plus with d3, water in a shallow dish. My experience with baby lizards is that usually when they get lethargic things are too cool, or too damp, or they aren't getting the supplementation they need. Hope this helps. You can reach me via e-mail, the bottom of every page on my site has my e-mail address. If you get the situation under control, there is a chance that I might be interested in some of your offspring if they are unrelated to mine.

    What is the appropriate temperature and humidity?

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not track humidity. The containers are air tight food storage containers. So no humidity leaves. I use 1 part water to 1 part perlite by weight. Temperature can vary a lot depending on what you want to try to do with the incubation (for example, the eggs rest or diapause a kind of random length of time during incubation. More predictable incubation time can be achieved by allowing the eggs to drop into the 60s f for a couple of months and then returned to the 70s, or by simply warming to about 80-82 during the day and allowing the eggs to cool into the low 70s- mid 60s at night. But generally speaking, temperatures in the upper 60s to upper 70s throughout incubation are fine.

    • @lisaenglert3202
      @lisaenglert3202 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@livingwithlizards3104 can you give me a specific range for humidity? No one is giving an actual number 😅

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisaenglert3202 I cannot. I imagine it is close to 100% because I see condensation in the containers below the perlite line. I use air tight food storage containers. That means that humidity stays constant throughout incubation once the eggs are set. Humidity is determined by the amount of water in the substrate. I have used either perlite with an equal amount of water by weight, or I have used vermiculite that has been soaked in water for a few minutes and then had squeezed as much water as possible from the vermiculite (this was once very common for chameleon eggs) and I now use hatch-rite (a commercial product that seems to me to just be pre-moistened perlite so I don't have to weight things out). If you want to know the humidity for my eggs, just try one or more of those methods and measure the humidity in the container.

    Frank Payne talked in a video about how he thinks more species of reptiles should be allowed to 'cool' in the winter/off period and keepers should not be so stringent about maintaining the same heat levels year round, as that is not how it works out in the wild. Seeing these desert lizards handle the temps of a Virginia winter is pretty fantastic

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah- I tend to agree with that idea. I saw this behavior in February with similar temperatures again this past winter with painted dragons coming up for a bit in a warmish snap to catch some sun even though temps at night are in the teens and 20s. They do really well in my outdoor terraria year round.

    How long did it take before the eggs started hatching? like how many days or months?

    • @livingwithlizards3104
      @livingwithlizards3104 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like it took this group about 7 1/2 months (I really can't remember, but at the beginning of the video I can see the lay date on the egg container was December 2nd 2019 and I say the is hatching today, July 24, 2020. Like many chameleons, veiled chameleon eggs go through a diapause or dormant period where the eggs are not really developing they are just waiting at some point before proceeding to develop further. Because this period of dormancy can vary, I have had eggs hatch as early as 5 1/2 months and as long as 14 months after being laid. I have been keeping and breeding these lizards since 1993 and during that time have tried many temperature variations for incubation, including day/night temperature swings, warmer and cooler constant temperatures and a winter period with several weeks of very cool temperatures followed by months of warmer. For me, the fastest incubation time was achieved by a temperature of 82 day/69-72 night throughout, followed closely in time by the several weeks of cool, then warmer method. The longest happened when they were kept fairly cool (mid-60s to about 72 at the most) throughout.

      Not sure what you are asking? Depends on the weather and the time of year? I live in Central Virginia... There is a spectrum of temperature available to the lizards and potential egg laying spots in the terraria because of the design. I let them do their thing, and lay eggs at spots they find appropriate and the design allows the lizards to behave naturally and control their own body temperature...

      Black area? Not sure what you are talking about? Maybe adjust your computer monitor? There is one dark lizard that is curled up in the video. They do change color- that is why they are called chameleons. It is not dead. Sometimes they rest as newborns after hatching. Sometimes they change color. Resting curled up is not unusual right after hatching. Like baby anythings, it takes a lot of energy to come into the world and sometimes it takes an hour or two to adjust to the change of life outside the egg.
