2024 10 Mike Frazier – 19th Century Advertising
Mike Frazier - 19th Century Advertising-The advertising that appeared in the Rhinebeck Gazette will be the focus of this talk since it not only allowed the newspaper to afford to do its work, but it often revealed as much about the 19th century character of our town as the news reported in the same issue of the newspaper. The advertising also provides information about the business history of the community not available anywhere else.

Superb presentation! Rich in detail. Warrants watching again as there was so much wonderful information.
Where did the bricks from Broadway in Newburgh come from.fortunately my mom covered three in tapestry I still have.are they numbered for identity.mine are doorstops.
Replying from the future here... Many of Newburgh's bricks came from Roseton, which was where the powerplant is now. Then there was Dennings Point across the river in the city of Beacon, and Brockway which was on the river west of Renegade Stadium. But it really coulld have been from anywhere along the river; you'd have to see what markings it has on the frog (the indented part of the brick face) to really know.
Archie Stewart (Stewart Airport)of Newburgh filmed his pond Brookside Pond ice harvesting it's online a 10 minute vid done by town of newburgh historian it shows everything
The ice was delivered by horse and wagon to residences.the children called the horse mr.caca because he always used the bathroom.who cleaned that up? The ice man with his shovel into a bin behind the wagon.what? Yes!
Women in Newburgh put cardboard signs in their street window to tell the ice man how much to bring up.$.10,$.25,etc.5 walk up stairs was a lot with a rubber shoulder protector.
Would have liked to attend this in person
TH-cam....LOST RAIL BEDS.....Rhinebeck& Connecticutt RR parts 1 thru 6
Loved this!
Unfortunately, Mr. Musso has perpetuated a local myth about The Point (aka Hoyt House). Public records indicate that the property was acquired through negotiated purchase, not eminent domain. The purchase provided that Mrs. Hoyt could live there another 5 years, but she decided to move out less than 6-months after the sale. She sold most of the contents at a 3-day public auction.
This is still here along with the Washburn brick factory in glaco where I live is still in great condition
Thank you for a lovely update, and informative video on the incredible Wilderstein ❤
@20:51 - The Archbishop of Canterbury is not head of the church of England. The Monarch (currently King Charles III) is.
No way did U.S.Grant live in Salt Point! However as you mentioned he may have visited. There was an officer that lived in Salt Point who may have been a cadet with Grant at the time, so it's possible.
Bill Birns was my English teacher at Margaretville Central and I played soccer with his son. Great teacher, and decent goalie! Great to hear him lecture again.
My wife and I have a large faux-bamboo armoir from the same suite as the furniture shown.
That was a golly good yarn. Well done, enjoyed it immensely.
Good Job! Familiar Voice...
Probably as good a connection with the past you will find online of this area.
This is a wonderful resource! The interior is beautiful and the discussion of architectural styles throughout the house was wonderful. I would love to visit one day when I get out of college! One thing I particularly wonder is how the mansion was built around the original house. 7:58 beginning of the tour 12:00 23:00 entering the house 33:30 beginning of family section Around 45:00 beginning of restoration information
What?? No comments?? What a great presentation David......really enjoyed the old images, most never having been seen by the Public. Especially enjoyed the Bangall shot!...(having just done a quick video of the Bangall area myself)..Lost Rail Beds.
This lecture is fantastic! Great idea covering not so well known estates. I grew up in NYC and never new there were this many mansions in upstate NY.
Looking forward to visiting
Very fitting that the Astor Gates were re-installed at their original location. Big thanks go to ALL involved in preserving history.
I remember the old beekman arms hotel / restraunt in Rhinebeck
Great job Matt and Stewart!
I’m coming.
Reminds me of those dark reddish, brown bricks, pointing out the forgotten and left behind, two huge Pilars, like that of towers. Well known to me, as my soon to be again. Richman plaza, on the Hudson formerly the Bronze or The Bronx river, way back then, sometimes referred to as Death Towers. Nah look way inside and know the knowledge and find out the secret to ? The River Park Towers , where life lives on forever even after death to claim it all back in the name of justice. Love & great presentation . This place you describe reminds me of a place familiar to me and my family. How nostalgic. JL.
Great! My father built, owned and operated the Community Garage. One small possible correction. they are not the Holy Cross cadets. They were from Cardinal Farley.
Amazing!
I just finished HBO’s The Guilded Age, and found this on TH-cam. Loved this lecture. SO INTERESTING!
this rocks, thanks for this
Bricks were also used to level the old cement mine floors to allow for mushroom growing.
Overcooked bricks were also known as LAMMIES.
So little correction the Van Dewater Store in Verbank Village is no longer apartments. I'm in the process of opening up the ground floor back into the open floor plan that I assume the original store had. Looks like I'll have to replace the supporting timber with proper lvl's though. And interestingly (imo) I'm going to turn the garage back into a metal working shop. Not a proper blacksmith like back in the day but closer than it has been in quite sometime. Just have to fire proof it.
Very interesting and well done lecture! Thank you!
This was so interesting thanks for uploading and sharing , I always wanted to know about the historic houses in Hudson Valley, All very interesting for me down here in Australia
👍👍
Most enjoyable. The interiors have a lot of red? Popular colour then it seems. 👏
This snowflake has the worst case of penis envy I’ve ever seen.
Yes. The country club prison. The wealthy and the well-connected get to go there. Justice is different for people of wealth and people of poverty.
Great lecture, really enjoyed the connection between the gilded age millionaires and WWI.
Very comprehensive and interesting lecture. Thank you.
While viewing the Wyndcliffe property segment it brings to mind the recent destruction of the Bennett College massive building complex in Millbrook. As Tony stated- ...just too far gone to restore. The last time I was at Wyndcliffe was at least 10 years ago, and sadly I have to agree.
Excellent!
I wouldn’t trust a vacuum cleaner on an expensive, antique rug.
Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: I don't understand. Why--why would she want to be a secretary? Matthew Crawley: She wants a different life . . Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: But why? I should far prefer to be a maid in a large and pleasant house than work from dawn till dusk in a cramped and gloomy office.
