    What was the reasoning behind the set back windscreen frame on the driver's side, rather than just the standard split screen?

    • @cptvhiltz
      @cptvhiltz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The set back screen was to reduce glare. It was also used on Bet and weymann hermes bodied buses of the 1960s. Leyland was breifed by the NBC that their new design must feature all flat glass to reduce cost. A flat vertical slab of glass however is prone to sun glare.

    • @cptvhiltz

      Yes it sure is. The analogue computer opens a solenoid valve under the back seat of the bus. This dumps the air out of the air throttle ram for just over a second. It prevents 2 gears being engaged at the same time preventing damage

    Great video. I hadn't realised that Lothian Atlanteans were fully auto. Do they have the later style gear selector on the right line a National and Olympian? Also, am I right in thinking that Lothian specced all their Atlanteans without power steering?

    • @cptvhiltz
      @cptvhiltz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Craig the bus does indeed have the later black CAV gear selector and LVA45 logicbox, just as you say same as the National and Olympian. Earlier buses has the black selector in the cab but still used the older CAV G2 logicbox. The LVA panel is a genuine Lothian one which features the non sequential downchange modification which makes it far smoother to drive over the standard CAV panel. Lothian didnt spec power steering on any of their Atlanteans. The drivers certianly had a bit more work to do over other companies buses.

    This is a truly fabulous video! I have huge regrets as a few years ago I uploaded footage of an old NBC training video on how to drive a semi auto as I thought it was interesting. But the backlash from it was horrendous. The lack of mechanical knowledge people had and would go around screaming 2 SECOND PAUSE YOU'RE DESTROYING THE BRAKE BANDS because of my video was awful, ended up taking it down as people clearly missed the point, ie that damage only ever occurred when 2 gears were engaged at the same time and that as long as there was a small throttle dip and the smallest of pauses to allow 1 gear to disengage before the next one kicked in it was fine. And if anything, this video proves exactly that point! Although, am I right in thinking that many operators went back to semi automatics from auto hydracyclic/Pneumocyclic because of when the vehicles aged the computers started losing their marbles and getting out of sync and started chewing themselves apart? I heard this rumour from a former company operator which to me sounds credible given how many Olympians you see with slipping gearboxes and hydracyclic automatic units fitted

    • @cptvhiltz
      @cptvhiltz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a lot of drivers have some really silly ideas when it comes to how buses should be driven. A lot of what people have been told is third hand information or just simply applied in the wrong way. Common to all is how passionate people are about their point of view. Its rubbish you had to take the video down. Its correct you need to leave a gap between gear changes to allow for one band to release and the next one to take up. Visually you can see in this video just how long that pause needs to be. You will also see there is no revving of the engine required during up or down changing, its utter rubbish. It sounds good and gives the driver something to do when bored but it is not needed. A lot of operators and people go for semi auto conversion as its much cheaper than a repair of the ECU and the systems it needs to run. The control unit, brain, ecu, or whatever you want to call it is fragile and its not they get worse with age it just fails suddenly. Slipping gears is mainly due to brake band wear or glazing on pneumatic, hydracyclic can simply be an oil pressure set incorrectly or a leak. It is not difficult to get a gearbox running correctly if you have the information, tools, and skills. Sadly in preservation many don't so semi it is. My ECU failed through a poor earth, the unit had to be sent off for specialist repair, £200 just to open it and diagnose fault, add to that only one place I know of still fix them and replacement parts have to be salvaged from other LVA 45 panels I have spare as they ditched all their units.

    • @cptvhiltz

    • @BusThrash
      @BusThrash 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cptvhiltz ah yes! I did give it a watch. So I'm assuming that it was at this point when the throttle dip started to fail on buses with the automatic system that all the issues would start with slippage between gears? I have seen a fair few automatic SCG/Leyland boxes were there was no throttle dip and usually there would be some amount of slippage usually it must be said between 2nd and 3rd which I'm guessing was due to those gears having the highest output of torque and higher usage

    • @cptvhiltz
      @cptvhiltz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Pneumocyclic gearbox is the same unit in both semi auto and fully automatic buses, all that changes is the method of control. There is absolutely no need for long pauses between gears the whole thing is a myth. You can is rubbish when you watch the LVA 45 system in action, its operating the gearbox as Leyland intended with a very brief delay of a second between gears. You have to laugh as its gotten so bad we now have some drivers who even rev a semi auto between gear changes as you would a 1920s sliding mesh manual gearbox. Its comical how little engineering understanding some people have when they try and add validity to the silly things they do.
