Wildfires: Myths, Realities, and Future Prospects with Assoc. Prof. Rachael Nolan | EcolClips
EcolClips by Dr. Julian Schrader (Interviewer; Lecturer at Macquarie University) and Dr. Cornelia Sattler (Video Production).
In EcolClips, we document and explain ecological theories, landmark experiments, and classic ecology themes by scientists across all ecological disciplines.

Wildfires are a natural part of many ecosystems. However, in recent decades, they have become more frequent and severe on an unprecedented scale.
We spoke with Dr. Rachael Nolan from Western Sydney University in Australia to explore the effects of wildfires on native vegetation and discuss strategies for better management. Dr. Nolan is a leading expert in fire ecology and has closely studied and documented the impact of the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020 on Australia’s native plants.

Parasitoid Wasps: Aliens of the Insect World | EcolClips
มุมมอง 1.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Parasitoid wasps are insects that use hosts for the development of their larvae, ultimately killing them. These wasps, found worldwide, are part of the Hymenoptera group, which includes bees and ants. They undergo complete metamorphosis, with their larvae feeding on or inside the host. Some species, like spider wasps, paralyze their prey and lay eggs on them, while others feed internally. With ...

    Excellent commentaries. Ecosystem academia must shift from focusing on rarefied research to focusing on teaching and research focused on action and impact to save what is left of our collapsing ecosystems and biodiversity.

    What about Central American cichlids?

    • @EcolClips
      @EcolClips 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks - good point. Another example of where species concepts reach their limits: Populations that have just diverged, being on track to become new species; we can't really say when a population has crossed the boundary to become a new species already. Cichlids, with their small range sizes, rapid evolution, and specialized breeding ecology, tend to do this quite often. This also reminds me of the African cichlids from the Great Lakes. We interviewed Prof. Rick Shine on rapid evolution, and he brings up yet another example: cane toads in Australia. th-cam.com/video/k0ORjU9YDdM/w-d-xo.html

    Beautiful quality of footage. I think I can I remember catching heaps of these in my youth when they were having one of their big population booms, was a two for one catch! How damaging is the Tasmanian eucalypt leaf Beetle to Euc populations? I assume it gets it name from the food it likes to eat.

    • @EcolClips
      @EcolClips ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Mathew! Indeed, the beetle got its name from its preferred food. It can cause severe damage to eucalypt plantations. Find more information about the beetle and potential management recommendations, for example, here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00049158.2018.1425969?casa_token=me7liWfnsSIAAAAA%3A1D7RQaS5kL5WF74NogI7sqr9wiz2uMzucyjxpk11L_2xVv2Cn_7KspB_X26ctWhBYTNsA_-bMCA www.researchgate.net/profile/Shahlinney-Lipeh/publication/341561426_Non-destructive_assessment_of_natural_durability_A_US_perspective/links/5ec72d51458515626cbf33e0/Non-destructive-assessment-of-natural-durability-A-US-perspective.pdf#page=29
